STICK IT TO THE MAN LAH!!

flyer link:

Here's a birthday party for our good friend Stick (current sticksman for Ruin, also ex-Doom, ex-Extreme Noise Terror, ex-Zounds, and about 22 more influential UK punk bands since the mid-80s).

Bands:

CARBURETOR DUNG: Boring old farts really!! Ho! Ho!!

APPARATUS: reigning most impressive Swedish-82 Raw-Punk/D-Beat masters! Stick played a whole set with the guys recently (with Apparatus drummer Yus shifted on 2nd guitar) and it was awesome!

GASOLINE GRENADE: A brand new band featuring Man & Pijan (from ISA and also Angkasawan Negara), Mirza (Relationsheep) and Joe (Hostile Disgrace) - one of the few grouping who love its melodic raw punk rock mixing Bad Religion, Propagandhi & I-Farm to the logical Malaysian conclusion! No website or MySpace just yet.

THE BEBEX: This is Indonesian folk-punk featuring current exile Bebe (ex-Black Boots!)

THE GERGASI: Our American smelly-traveller friend Aaron with his shrunken acoustic guitar and mandolin too!

And more to come of course!

Be there! BTW, it's donation-only BUT please make it RM10!!!

If you're lost looking for The Annexe:

Hello good people!

A while ago I wrote to many of you asking for support to bring over Ian MacKaye and Amy Farina's duo The Evens. Thanks to the many, many positive replies. The show would've gone down very well indeed.

However, I'm sad to inform you people that The Evens is NOT able to come and play KL next month. Our request for the duo to come over was a bit too late. Ian tried his best to schedule a date but since everything was already planned and booked, the changes would upset the initial costing involved, so the visit is off.

My apologies.

Here is Mr. MacKaye’s statement: “I did speak to my travel agent and to try adding KL into the mix made the ticket costs quadruple! I wish we could have worked this out earlier when i could have worked on the routing a bit more, but as it stands I reckon we’re going to have to postpone a visit to Malaysia… Here’s hoping that we’ll be able to come out at some point in the not-too-distant future.”

Lets hope they wouldn’t miss KL next time.

cheers,

Joe

please do pass this around.

Dear People,

I'm now talking to Ian MacKaye (Fugazi & Minor Threat) and Amy Farina
(The Warmers) on the possibilities of bringing their new band, THE
EVENS, here to Kuala Lumpur to do a show or two in early March, right
after their tour of Australia and New Zealand.

http://www.dischord.com/bands/evens.shtml
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4625784

I'm wondering (loudly) if many of you good people would be interested
enough support and come to the shows.

Your support would make it all worthwhile as it may take a lot of
effort and a bit of money to make it work. So I'm wondering how many
of you would be interested to see them play.

Do write and tell me, so I can gauge what's the interest is like.

thank you in advance,

Joe Kidd

The World, Don Lett's Punk - Attitude, Urgh! A Music War! and more TBA.

WHY?

Central Market has always been the home for the local underground music and
alternative
or subculturally-inclined creative people ever since the mid-80s. It was where
all the
bands, writers, editors, DIY record label people, independent music promoters,
street
artists, buskers, painters, etc. came together everyday to meet, hang-out, plan
their
projects, and more. It was a potently creative scene which had given birth to
many
currently well-known artists, musicians, writers and more.

However, the closing of the Hameed Restaurant (situated inside the Central
Market) earlier
this year signified the final nail in the coffin for the arts and music scene in
KL. With no
central place to meet, the Kuala Lumpur offbeat, non-commercial creative people
are
generally scattered all around the city, with a large number of them opting to
just stay at
home and watch the idiot box instead! This sudden vegetation of the creative
minds of our
pemuda-pemudi harapan bangsa is very alarming and unhealthy indeed.

With that in mind, two entities have been hard at work trying to resurrect the
old Central
Market lepak-lepak camaraderie and creative culture. The scene needs a place to
sit, meet
and be hard at work again, and so The Ricecooker Shop and Bau Bau Café with the
help of
the good people involved with the new Central Market management; are coming
together
to provide the space needed for all the activities to mushroom and prosper just
like the
golden years that was from the late-80s and mid-90s.

WHO?

Bau Bau Café

Bau Bau Café; is a food and drinks outlet run by a collective of young persons,
some of
them involved in the Food Not Bombs KL. The aim is to celebrate youth culture
and
alternative urban living. Bau Bau is going to be the ultimate café resistance –
port Anak
Muda - a meeting place where the lepak culture is transformed into an art form.
The café
is offering the ultimate experience of Masakan Melayu - a fusion of very
traditional Malay
food mélange with the minimalist and hungry urban youth lifestyle.

The Ricecooker

The Ricecooker or The Ricecooker Shop is an outlet for any sort of creative
products
produced outside of the normal mainstream channels. It's a shop celebrating and
promoting the oft-sidelined independent and do-it-yourself culture; especially
products
from the Southeast Asian region.

It will carry music, films, art, fanzines, books, writings, merchandising and
more made by
artists, musicians, writers, poets et al who believe in the spirit of punk rock
and DIY;
keeping it sharp and real without any involvement from the corporations and
profit-centric
entities out there. The Ricecooker will also offer design services, web
consultancy,
publishing and printing.

WHERE?

Both Bau Bau Café and The Ricecooker are situated on the big and open first
floor Terrace
at Central Market's Annexe (the building immediately at the back of the main
Central
Market).

For the past few months, the Central Market Annexe is being gradually renovated
into an
arts and performing centre featuring several different spaces and rooms for
exhibitions,
theatre, film shows, concerts, workshops and other creative ventures. The
building will
soon be hosting four floors of the arts and music day in and day out!

Bau Bau Café; and The Ricecooker are a part of this fine effort by the new
Central Market
management and labDNA to bring the arts, its people and creations back its
original
home, back to Central Market!

Special thanks to Nani Kahar, Peter Kiernan and CM's supremo Mr. Bernard Bong
for
making all of this possible!

Remember people! It's about the arts! Arts for the people! Arts for everyone!

PLEASE ALL COME AND CELEBRATE THE HOMECOMING!

NOTE: Those who wanna take part in the performances, do contact us! We have a

SOLIDARITY FOR KAMPUNG BEREMBANG

The Kampung Berembang villagers really need our helps - tents, food, clothing, pillows, blankets and so on.

Some of you may heard of the Kampung Berembang, Ampang incident on the news. For whom haven't please read the article from Bernama News attached below.

We're now organizing to gather canned foods, clothing, pillows, blankets etc for the Kampung Berembang victims.

Any kinda help would be appreciated.

You could reach us at: propamedia@... or 013-2497199 (Kid)

From Bernama News:

MPAJ DEMOLISHES 51 HOMES, HOMELESS LEFT IN RAIN

Nov 20 (Bernama) -- The residents of Kampung Berembang, Ampang could only stand in the rain with their crying children and watch in despair as their homes of forty years were torn down by five bulldozers on the order of the Selangor government. Their worldly belongings were scattered in piles outside their wrecked homes, drenched in the rain. Around them, hundreds of Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) enforcement officers stood and watched.

Earlier in the afternoon, two of the houses were mysteriously razed in a fire. It is learned that 21 residents and activists have been detained so far for hampering demolition efforts. This was a surprising turn of events considering that earlier this morning, the Prime Minister's Department had issued a letter addressed to Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo asking to defer the demolition of the houses to April 30, next year.

Along with representatives from some non-governmental organisations (NGOs), the residents had assembled in front of a half-completed structure which was to be the management office of a project to be undertaken there, located beside their village, as early as 8am. They had also formed a barricade of cars and wooden planks in front of their houses to prevent the bulldozers from ripping into their homes, which they claimed were built since the 1960s, when the place was still a mining area and a mini-jungle.

However, things got ugly when several of the MPAJ officers tried to force their way through and performed citizen's arrest on eight people, including two women. "We're afraid they might pull another "guerilla" tactic on us" said a resident, Norhayati Aini Mohd Yusof, 49. She said that on Friday, bulldozers unexpectedly turned up and tore down four houses in the village while everyone was away at work.

By noon, the NGOs and resident representatives had managed to get a letter from the Prime Minister's Department to stop the demolition, but the residents said they would not be placated until the bulldozers and MPAJ officers left. It seemed that they were right in being suspicious because barely an hour after the letter was issued, a melee broke out and truckloads of Federal Reserve Unit Police had to be deployed to the site.

A fire broke out in one of the houses soon after and the bulldozers made their way into the village, flattening down houses. According to a NGO representative Y. Kohila, the houses, totalling 51 in all, were to be demolished to make way for a mega development project by the Acmar Group of Companies, to be completed by 2010.

"I, like many others, have lived here since 1964. Now that we have made the place livable and valuable, they (the state government) want to take it away from us," a resident Noralizan Ali, 43, told Bernama. "We have seen the title deed to this land. It belongs to several individuals, not the state government," he added, but refused to name the owners. MPAJ, however, maintained that it was a squatter area and that the government had a right to evict the squatters there.

There were initially 1,085 squatter homes in the Ampang district, and the council had managed to relocate all but the 51 homes in Kampung Berembang, said the MPAJ Town Planning Director Awang Mustapha Md Yunus. The residents had filed for an injunction against MPAJ on March 6 this year to prevent it from taking any action against them, but another court ruling later overruled it.

When asked why MPAJ went ahead with the demolition despite the letter from the Prime Minister's Department, Awang Mustapha said that they had referred back to the state government who gave them the green light. On the fate of the families from the 51 homes, he said: "We have given them ample notice, and offered to rehouse them in Kampung Muhibbah, Puchong, but they refused. "And when they filed the injunction against us, they automatically absolved their right towards any kind of compensation. We are no longer obliged to rehouse or compensate them."

Unclogged & Cactus Distro bring you a bit of fun…

Awas! Otak Kotak Meledak!

more info & map & sounds: http://ricecooker.kerbau.com

Friday, 17th November 2006
8.30pm, RM15 (with 1st soft drink)
Little Havana, Changkat Bukit Bintang KL (see map below) | http://www.mylittlehavanakl.com

Coinciding with the release of Opposition Party’s new album earlier this year, Cactus Distro and some friends are putting together some shows for the veteran Singaporean punk band. There’ll be shows in Klang and Puchong, and the KL show is being held at Unclogged’s current haunt, Little Havana. It has been quite a long time since OP played here and the recent change in sound is another bonus to check these oldies out!

OPPOSITION PARTY

Opposition Party is (arguably) the FIRST Singaporean punk band! They started out in late 1986, a good 20 years ago! When I started doing gigs for the KL scene back in 1989/90, there were no local punk bands active and gigging, apart from Kuantan’s Hijrah that is; so when I wanted a punk band to grace gigs full of thrash-metal bands, the first band I contacted then was Opposition Party.

OP has been going through a lot of different line-up changes but mainman Francis Frightful is still there after all these years! In the mid-80s up to the early 90s, OP played raging raw punk of the British early-80s style (UK82) but later implemented a lot of metal-influences, which in a way turned me off big time!

With the relase of thier new album “Zombified” earlier this year, I heard a lot of buzz from old friends that OP is back to playing the old-style! At the point of writing I’ve only heard one tunes, but I’m sure am looking forward to the gig to hear more.

KAH-ROE-SHI

Previously known (for two gigs!) as Union of Slaves, Kah-Roe-Shi is a new project featuring Kid and Fahmi of Mass Separation, and also Zul of Akta Angkasa on drums. The band described themselves as “doom-laden hardcore punk” and I can gleefully add that they are also experimenting with a lot of new areas, including the use of samplers and film projections.

NUISANCE DRILLED

Heard a lot about this bunch of bowel-churners, but here’s Kid (Kah-Roe-Shi) description of the band: Nuisance Drilled is a gloomy doom crust metal band formed by members of now defunct Banzai 606 and thrashcore unit Sarjan Hassan. Influenced by Bongzilla, Meatjack, Burning Witch, Brainoil, Damad, Corrupted, Sleep, Moss, Goatsnake, Earth, Dystopia, Thorrs Hammer, Isis, Sunn O))), Khanate, Church Of Misery, Earthride, Noothgrush, YOB, Kylesa, Grief, Eyehategod, Fleshpress and Black Sabbath. Soon putting out a full length album (recorded back in May 2006).

<a href="ttp://www.myspace.com/nuisancedrilled" target="blank">Nuisance Drilled @ MySpace</a>

MAHARAJAH COMMISSION

You know them already lah. The Subang/Klang avant-punk, “unhinged Rolling Stones” is finally back after a very lengthy silence. This is a reunion with all the original guys, plus ex-Chong Yang, Boon on drums. The band put out their debut album a few years ago and only a handful ever got sold! So now, it’s the chance for you to evaluate the genius again! And yes, buy the CD lah! The band has a slew of dates happening after this show too!

THE GOODNITE GOODIES

All the way from the town where I grew-up at, Dungun, Terengganu! Melodic punk rock of the more energetic and fiery kind. This will be the first time the band play outside of Terengganu too!

Unclogged Note: We have decided to keep the show short, with only 5 bands. This is because Little Havana has this policy of no “too loud” band after 11.30 PM, as the neighbours living at the nearby apartments would complain and call the cops! With OP headlining, we can’t risk that by going over midnight. So, please be there early.

Lots of DIY/Indie releases gonna be available for sale at the show, if you have any recordings of your own or if you run a distro etc., do come and set up on the tables at the back of the room.

Do come!

and yes, never forget this mantra!

CORPORATE ROCK STILL SUCKS!

cheers,

Joe Kidd

ROJAK SOTONG BUFFET DINNER DANCE PARTY THINGY

Friday, 22nd September 2006
RM15 / 8.30 PM
Little Havana, Changkat Bukit Bintang KL (see map below)

Bands:

MR STERILE ASSEMBLY
Zany, angular avant-punk with one huge baritone saxophone doing jazz-skronk Peter Brötzmann-style - imagine a ten-storey toad in its noisy death-throes. Also features one amazing drummer we now call as THE ROJAK SOTONG, one ass-kicking bassist of Kim Gordonesque stature and one very young skinny and shy 6 footer kid on spazztic guitar. Yup! They are a sight to behold, and I'm not talking about their warpaint and aprons just yet!

Those who have been to mr sterile Assembly's shows in Klang and Sri Hartamas recently would tell you how endearing and fun these guys were. Some kids came up to me and mentioned similarities to Mr. Bungle/Fanthomas and Primus. But if you're well-verse with the more experimental, anarchic avant-garde end of punk rock; bands like The Ex, Dog-Faced Hermans, mid-period Chumbawamba and Crass would take you to the area which mr sterile & gang dwells in.

JAMBAN
More like "Jam Band", an improv jam fest with Yandsen AKA Yong Yen Sin (ex-Moxuan, Klangmutationen, Xing Wu Records), Ah Tham AKA Tham Kar Mun (ex-Chong Yang, Klangmutationen, Xing Wu Records) and Aziz (Ciplak!, ex-Talentless Plywood and the vacuum-cleaner-totting version of early 667-Neighbour of the Beast!). All are heavily involved in the criminally-ignored local abang-garde scene, and all the fabulous mind-warping SiCKl happenings too.

Do I know what to expect? Well, not me. Anything can happen with these guys. It may be just them standing around on stage smoking a cigarette for 30 minutes! Abang-garde apa!

TENDERFIST
Have to admit, I'm not familiar with Tenderfist at all, apart from them very good songs on its MySpace page. Is it a band or is it just a one-man project? Well, Tenderfist played at the recent Greener Riddim show at KLPac a-lonesome; a chair, an acoustic guitar and tonnes of songs. Judging from the slew of tunes on the MySpace page, I'm piqued; hopefully you are too!

THE HANDSOME RAIS
–Breathlessly suave, debonair rib-tickler from the decadent 70s. Yes, the man is back for his third appearance at an Unclogged do. The Rais failed to spark much engagement and hilarity the last time he was on stage, will he pull back from the brink and rescue us all from the relentless staidness of our backyard? Well, I hope so!

DJANGO & THE HIGH COMMISSIONERS
Well, this is still quite a mystery, even to us. We were presented with a badly recorded song on a cassette (yes, that plasticky square thing with two rollers and tape). Only one song but what a song it was! And what a voice! We can't even describe it here as the Django guy wants it to be a surprise. All we can say is, do expect loads clever verses.

CIPLAK!
Cross-dressing, lipstick-smearing geeks with guitars and a drumset, or a piano or a flute or a wind-up doll. With these guys, rock'n'roll is long dead and we are all vultures feeding upon the corpse. Amen.

A FEW MORE ACTS?
Who knows? There should be at least another band on the list. There may be a film or two! Will keep you all posted on that.

To all homemade, DIY, indie people making and selling your own and your friends' stuff, do bring 'em for sale. We have a long row of tables at the back of the space for you to use.

do come & join the fun. bring a bit of extra Ringgits to spend on feeding the fashionably-starving indie/DIY industry.

BTW; repeat this mantra:

CORPORATE ROCK STILL SUCKS!

Unclogged presents

MERDE KAH

Friday, 1st September 2006
RM15 / 8.30 PM
Little Havana, Changkat Bukit Bintang KL (see map below) | http://www.mylittlehavanakl.com

Bands:

AZMYL YUNOR & THE CIGARETTES
I have been waiting for this really. Azmyl Yunor's "no depression-ish" alt-country with a full band! Yeah. Americana meets  Malaysiana, so expect a lot of drawling Koboi Klang shoot-outs!

no site yet

DESERTERS
The current indie rock darlings; busy with tonnes of gigs and even a stint supporting New Yorkers We Are Scientists recently. May get too big for Unclogged very soon, so do catch 'em before they go supernova.

NAO
Most interesting shouty post-punk band around. They even looked like young angry postmen. Expect a lot of telling off, so do slap yourself a few times before entering their loud-hailer range.

M. JAYZUAN
Recent convert to the deadly disease of "entrepreneurism" and now owner of a hip indie-rock store up there in Ipoh. Usually seen bopping on stage with Free Love. Also known as an indie-rock slut, so offer him a spot in your band and blag a pair of shoes off the man.

THE RANOMES
I haven't seen them yet but I've heard enough to not miss 'em ever again. Prime time the-first-three-albums-era The Ramones reborn somewhere in the back-streets of Bukit Bintang. Expect a lot of 1,2,3,4!

website is still in the gabbagabbaland

RAHMAT HARON
Pemuda harapan bangsa dan negara! The word here is "RAW". From naked poetry to unhinged songs on broken down acoutic guitar. Dread, beats and blood indeed.

CARBURETOR DUNG
Boring old farts, really.

&

Awaiting for confirmation:

BITTERSWEET
Anglophilic Brit-popper of much swagger and style. They wear shades at nights, so always keep a look out when you're walking. With Bittersweet, you can imagine a world where the early 90s is on perpetual repeat! Yeah!

do come & join the fun. lots of homemade recordings & merchandise will be on-sale too. IF YOU ARE COMING, DO SPEND THE WHOLE WEEK WITH THE RAMONES SONGBOOK, COZ WE GONNA SINGALONG WHEN THE RANOMES CLOSES THE SHOW!

Expect DIY/Indie releases from Propamedia, Nervous Records, Troubadours, Knot Records, Pet Projects etc. So do bring a bit of extra Ringgits to spend on feeding the fashionably starving indie/DIY industry.

BTW; repeat this mantra:

Dear all,

Since this letter was written (last weekend) four freedom of __expression violations have taken place, warnings to the media to tone down reports on crime and violence; 12 teenagers arrested for looking like Black Metal fans; police visit to Malaysiakini; and the decision by the International Malaysia Studies Conference not to proceed with a forum on religion, interfaith and national unity.

Please read the letter below, and if you agree with the contents, please send an endorsement to waifong@..., with your name and designation.

Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi,

Ministry of Internal Security,
Blok D1 & D2, Parcel D,
Pusat Pentadbiran & Kerajaan Persekutuan,

Date:

Dear Datuk Seri,

Re: Upholding Article 10 of the Constitution

Open Letter to the Prime Minister: ‘Every citizen has the right to freedom of speech and __expression”

We, the undersigned, are alarmed at the numerous infringements of the right to freedom of speech and __expression that have taken place in 2006. The right to freedom of speech and __expression is guaranteed under the Constitution.

We urge the Prime Minister to show his respect for the Constitution by:
  1. Immediately desisting from political interference in the media
  2. Repealing all legislation that infringes freedom of __expression
  3. Denouncing those who infringe freedom of __expression through the use of threats, intimidation or violence.

The following is a chronological list of the violations that have occurred in 2006:

1. Political interference in China Press on the grounds of unethical reporting

Using the Printing Presses and Publications Act 1984, the Internal Security Ministry requested that Chinese-language daily China Press show cause why action should not be taken against them for an inaccurate report. The action had the knock-on effect of intimidating other media from reporting on potential abuses of power by the police.

2.Raid on 'Paul's Place' on New Year's Eve

A punk music gig was raided on New Year's Eve with 388 young people arrested. Initially, they were told that they were arrested for attending a 'black metal' concert. This was not illegal at the time. They were later told that they were being arrested for being at an unlicensed venue. However, people who were not in the venue were also arrested. The aftermath of the raid saw inaccurate and fanciful reporting on the gig, targeting a marginalised group.

3. Non-renewal of Oriental Daily News permit

Chinese daily Oriental Daily News had the renewal of its permit delayed. The permit was only given after several columnists had their columns stopped.

4.Non-renewal of Suara Keadilan permit
Opposition party organ Suara Keadilan did not receive a permit to publish.

5.Indefinite suspension of Sarawak Tribune
The Sarawakian English-language newspaper was suspended indefinitely following a decision to publish the Danish cartoons showing the Prophet Muhammad.

6.Suspension of Guang Ming Daily
The afternoon edition of the Chinese-language daily was suspended for two weeks after publishing a photograph showing a placard depicting cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad.

7.Suspension of Berita Petang
The Sarawakian Chinese-language daily was suspended following the publication of an allegedly seditious article.

8.Threats against other media for re-printing images containing images or references to the cartoons of Prophet Muhammad
The New Straits Times English-language daily and State-owned free-to-air television channel TV2 were threatened with action over images related to the Danish cartoon issue.

9.Banning of Mak Yong performances in Kelantan
The Kelantan state government banned private as well as public performances of Mak Yong just three months after UNESCO classified it as world cultural heritage.

10.Revival of debate on a legislated media council
Repeated calls have been made for a legislated media council. In an already over-regulated system, this is merely one more mechanism of control.

11.Closure of KakiKino film club
The KakiKino club showed art films at the National Film Development Body (Finas). A member of the public complained that 'pornography' was being shown, and the club was closed.

12.Halting performance of Satu Kali
Performance art presentation Satu Kali was halted following a police report lodged by a single member of the audience.

13.Banning of Lelaki Komunis Terakhir
A semi-musical documentary/ travelogue based on the places important in the life of the Malayan Communist Party leader Chin Peng. This was banned following a series of attacks made by people who had not even watched the movie.

14. Threats against Tamil newspaper Makkal Osai
Following reports on a speech made by political leader Datuk Seri Samy Vellu, the Tamil-language daily Makkal Osai received threats of having its offices torched, had copies of its newspaper publicly burned and had a defamation suit threatened.

15. Police attack on MerdekaReview.com journalist
Police attacked a Chinese-language online journalist covering a peaceful demonstration. Lim Hong Siang was kicked by police, and threatened with confiscation of his camera, after identifying himself as a reporter.

16. Banning of 33 books under the Printing Presses and Publications Act
Eighteen books, primarily on religion, were banned for presenting a threat to 'peace and harmony' and a further 15 books were banned for pornographic content. The former included books on comparative religion, academic texts and a book on Kundalini yoga.

17. Closure of Chinese-language talk-back radio programme
A programme on State-owned station Ai FM was pulled. The last show included a discussion on controversial initiatives on Chinese-language education.

18.Banning forums on upholding the Constitution, organised by the Article 11 coalition
Forums on upholding the Constitutional right to freedom of religion were banned following threats and intimidation by members of the public who saw the forums as an attack on Islam and Malay privileges.

19.Banning media coverage of the forums on upholding the Constitution
A ban was issued on the coverage of the forums being organised by Article 11, and on issues of race and religion.

20.Threats made against the media by the Information Minister
Information Minister Datuk Zainuddin Maidin issued a strongly worded statement condemning some of the print media, and later reiterated the desire to control online media.

21. 'Police permit' required for DAP forum
Opposition party DAP had a forum on race relations cancelled, after the venue told them that they needed a police permit, in contravention to established practice.

In addition to these violations, there also appear to have been media black-outs on various issues of public importance, including actions against interference in the media, demonstrations against fuel price hikes and statements by former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

We hold that the state, belonging equally to all, should not privilege one opinion over another, whether political, cultural or religious. We believe the only way to hold together a society as diverse as Malaysia is to promote peaceful dialogue and rational debate. Freedom of __expression is a pre-requisite for such dialogue and debate, and suppressing freedom in pursuit of harmony will attain neither. Allowing violence and intimidation to be used to silence dissidents instead plants the seeds of division and disharmony.

We urgently request that you uphold the Constitution and undertake changes to safeguard freedom of __expression. This requires a thorough review of legislation that inhibits communication rights, including the Sedition Act, the Official Secrets Act, the Printing Presses and Publications Act and the Communications and Multimedia Act.

Thank you,

The Undersigned;

sad news my friends,

Boy, guitarist of pioneer thrash metal band Punisher (he later on
played for funk-rockers Naked Butterfly) died Sunday July 30th at
home. He was electrocuted while fixing some lighting fixtures at his
house in Cheras.

for those who were there in the early days and knew him well, Boy was
a great guy, funny and full of life. When he joined Punisher in the
late 80s, playing alongside his older brother Karim, he was one of
the youngest guys in the scene then, hence the name "Boy" never left
the man. The last time I saw him play was at 2004's I Thrash
Therefore I Am reunion show; a joyous occasion where most of the
veterans came out of retirement to play together.

Condolences to his wife, children, family and friends.
