MY FAVOURITE FILM WITH MARC ALMOND
SUN 18 JULY 1PM (U)
CURZON SOHO
TICKETS £6
Everyone loves to go to the cinema and has a favourite film of all
time. My Favourite Film quite literally shares this sentiment by
giving well-known faces the chance to share their favourite film of
all time with an audience.
My Favourite Film in association with Time Out presents:
MARC ALMOND introducing IMITATION OF LIFE
Singer, songwriter and performer, Marc Almond's work with Dave Ball
as Soft Cell and then later as a respected solo artist has led to
over 15 million record sales worldwide spanning a 25 year career,
including a string of international hits with such classics
as 'Tainted Love', `Say Hello Wave Goodbye' and `Something's Gotten
Hold Of My Heart'. As a solo artist Marc has recorded over nine
albums, his most recent release being the critically hailed Russian
album `Heart On Snow'.
This afternoon is also a chance to celebrate the release of his new
book: IN SEARCH OF THE PLEASURE PALACE: DISREPUTABLE TRAVELS. In
this rollercoaster journey Marc goes in pursuit of the thrills,
spills and bellyaches that made each day of his youth so memorable
and created an image of him that was decadent, outrageous and
worryingly misunderstood. A wry, witty and all too often candid
journey navigating a path through middle age.
Marc will introduce his favourite film, a remarkable melodramatic
glorious masterpiece of 50s kitsch.
IMITATION OF LIFE
Director: Douglas Sirk
Starring: Lana Turner, John Gavin, Sandra Dee
USA 1958. 125mins.
Sirk's last movie in Hollywood is a coldly brilliant weepy, a rags-
to-riches tale of two intertwined families, in which the materialist
optimism is continually counterpointed by an emphasis upon racist
tension and the degeneration of family bonds. Forget those who decry
the 50s Hollywood melodrama; it is through the conventions of that
hyper-emotional genre that Sirk is able to make such a devastatingly
embittered and pessimistic movie. (Time Out Film Guide)
IN SEARCH OF PLEASURE PALACE: DISREPUTABLE TRAVELS will be on sale
after the screening at a discounted price.

^^(°°)^^ For Peter Mark Sinclair Almond...or better Marc Almond...
I'm wishing I was with you in this day "maybe tomorrow I may join you
in Paradise" HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARC!!!
^^(°°)^^Vampiria Doll LOVES you^^(°°)^^
I've seen THEM live!!!!
I can't believe it. It's been the most beautiful gig I've ever seen.
I don't often go to gigs...I live in a very small town, far from
Milano or Bologna (where usually international bands go to play), and
I've been at school until last year, so I never could go to see
anyone. I missed Morrissey, the Cure, Depeche Mode etc etc...But now
I'm free from school and I've gone to the gig with my friend Sarah.
Oh it was just FANTASTIC!
They've started with Memorabilia. Marc is WONDERFUL...oh, I don't
know. I mean, he's in his 40s. And I think he's got 9 lives! He just
looks like he's in his 20s. He is in a wonderful shape. He's still so
slim and dances all the time...he's Dorian Gray, he's sold his soul
to stay young, that's the only answer. Dave Ball was also
fantastic...with all his synths and keyboards all around, playing
that special, dark, fascinating music; making that magic atmosphere
that I feel so close to my soul. I felt like I was back in 1982.
They've played a lot of the songs from Cruelty Without Beauty, I'm
not sure of the titles as I still haven't got the album, anyway I
think they were Monoculture, Together Alone, Divided Soul etc. And
they're beautiful, they sound so like the early 80s. They've also
played, from Non Stop Erotic Cabaret, Bedsitter (!!! I love this
one!!!), Tainted Love, Where Did Our Love Go?, Youth (!!), Say Hello
Wave Goodbye (this one was the last one...sigh...take a look at my
face for the last time!) and, I COULD NOT BELIEVE IT, Torch and
Insecure Me!! I love these 2 songs! I've been singing them in my
bedroom for years and then seeing Soft Cell playing them has been
just too much for my poor heart. From The Art Of Falling Apart
they've played Barriers, Loving You Hating Me (I love this one!) and
The Art Of...
What can I say more? For one night I was back in 1982.
Dancing, Laughing, Drinking, Loving, and now I'm all alone in bedsit
land my only home!
tragedy!
but you dont want to be 36...
i know how you feel, i missed a few good concerts too. but marc is
going strong, and you will see him! think positive, the day will come!
(i havent seen him yet either)
Soft Cell are coming in Milan on April 26 (or 28, I don't remember),
and I CAN'T GO TO THEIR GIG COS I AM JUST A STUPID LITTLE GIRL WHO
LIVES WITH HER STUPID LITTLE PARENTS AND GOES TO HER STUPID LITTLE
SCHOOL IN THIS STUPID LITTLE TOWN MILES AWAY FROM MILAN and of course
my parents don't allow me to take the train to Milan and sleep at my
penpal's house + attend the gig.
oh, I want to be 36 years old.
yay! welcome welcome... glad you like the
pictures section, i have been working on a page of
wallpapers, the link to that should be up soon if you are
interested!<br>Sorry for the Loooooooooooong reply time... i have been
flakey! ;)<br>Ta!<br>Bird`
Hello everyone, I just joined this club, cos I love Marc...not very original I
know, but...what can I say more? I LUV HIM!<br>Errm....the pic section is
mah-velous, thanx!!!!
Well... everything here seems to have fallen by
the wayside! i am doing some additions, and what i
would like to have is a little fun gallery of Marc
creativity. so any creative Marc-related things would be
nice. i dont care what it is. you can send them to
tainted_bird@..., and all people who send things in get a Marc
Almond pin selection! oooooh... i know you are all
thrilled now! ;)
Well, as i assume everyone has seen, the Message
Board on the Theatre has been removed. Unfortunately, i
was gone on vacation, and i dont know what all the
fuss was about, other than Marc got offended about
something. So if anyone here knows what it was that
happened, please email me with the details. Ta very much.
The Marc Almond screensaver is finally up at The
Theatre. Its pretty lovely, but the pics from the
"Glorious" video are a bit grainy. Still better than the
little flying Windows screensaver though!<br>There are
also new wallpapers up at Twilights and Lowlifes.
Well, they've been up for a while, but i havent felt
like posting because i was in deep mourning for the
cancellation of Wotapalava ;).<br>Also up is the new Soft Cell
logo, which is now available as a pin through the
L'Esqualita pin site.<br>Links for all of these are in the,
*GASP*, link section. so be merry.<br>Ta!<br>Bird
This is pathetic. Wotapalava has been "postponed"
until next year. I think we all know that means
cancelled, they wont come back. its all stupid Sinead
O'Conners fault, im going to do the beat down! No official
statement has been released yet from Soft Cell, but keep
checking The Theatre for one. I AM NEVER GOING TO SEE
MARC, and that is SO WEAK, after i got a pit ticket!
First of all, The Theatre has up some new Marc
"Stranger Things" start up and shut down screens. There is
also wallpaper, and a screensaver on the way!<br>Also,
Vermin in Ermine, which is out of print, and generally
goes for a too much on some auction sites (*cough*
Ebay! *cough*), seems to be available through Amazon
UK. i ordered one, and they emailed me that it had
been shipped, so... lets see.<br>Also, i have lots of
little pins available now! these are not RRM pins, but
lovely Marc pins. Available to club members at half
price, i have added the link to the page in the Links
section. go look at least!<br>Ta!<br>Bird
Under Your Wing is really good! so is Dancer, i
love that one.<br>Mine is the german one from the
Theatre, i ordered the Glorious single before the album,
and they still havent sent that, i dont know whats
up.
Is yours the German one from the Theatre? I'm
still waiting to recieve mine damn it! I just can't
wait. I heard 'Under your Wing' live on a recording of
a '96 show. How does it sound on the album?
could it be??? is it possible? are you more obsessed with the Man's pubes than i
am?<br>i never thought i would see the day. no! no one can be more obsessed.
There are now Ruby Red Militia pins available. I
know some of you dont care, but i know there are
others that find these pins very lovely.<br>You can see
them in the photo section in the "Pins" Folder. They
only cost one thin dime and a stamp, if you live far
away, or one thin dime and the pleasure of my company
if you live close. ;)<br>So let me know if you want
one. or two.
Where did you hear a new song?! my goodness!
<br>i know, i must think that this is going to be
amazing that i am right there in the same general
vicinity of MARC! but its hard, there is this huge pit in
the very front... i am such a ticket snob! :(<br>but
regardless... ITS MARC!!! YAAAAAAY!!!!
Third row's not bad(not that i've seen the venue)
i think those are better than the tickets i got for
the baltimore show, and i ordered them like a couple
of hours after pre-sale started. oh well, i still
can't believe i'm going to be in the same place as HIM,
let me share your joy, MARC MARC MARC...<br>I heard
one song that's supposed to be on the new album and
it's so good, i just can't wait to get it!
okay, the German release of the new Marc album
"Stranger Things" is now available through the official
site. It has an extra track, and supposedly some fly
like, embossed mylar something-or-other cover. Its a
PREORDER though, and they cant send it to you unil June
18th. Psh. you know they just have BOXES of them
sitting around the office, but what are you going to do?
k... i got my Wotapalva tickets. sorry, but i am excited. only third row, i wish
i was pit, but if i am lucky i can sneak down there. yay. MARC MARC MARC.
AHHHH! Exactly!!! thats totally what i was
thinking... here it is, my first time to see Marc, and there
will be no chance of seeing any of his solo stuff!
Grrr... <br>omg... Marc and Soft Cell at one time... that
is such a lovely idea... thank you for that!
I know right! I just want to right tons of
letters to these decision makers and say, fine you can
leave Soft Cell third, IF you give solo Marc second
billing, DAMN IT! I know they'll never go for it, but a
girl can dream. It just bugs me that I'm finally going
to see him, and he's only going to play Soft Cell
songs, which I like but I love a lot of the stuff he's
done on his own!
Yes, i thought that was rather pleasant news, but
i also heard that they are not moving Soft Cell up
the bill, but are instead getting a replacement
group. Thats stupid, i cant believe Soft Cell are third
on the bill. I know they arent big in America,
but... i project my feelings about their greatness onto
this tour line-up mess! Heed my word, evil promoters!
;)
