SUNDAY, DEC. 6, 5-9 PM
Augie’s Barbed Wire Smokehouse & Treehouse Wine Bar

Due to circumstances beyond our control, the date and venue for the TMC annual
Holiday Party & Showcase have changed.

Please join us now for some holiday cheer on Sunday, Dec. 6, 5-9 p.m. at
Augie’s Barbed Wire Smokehouse & Treehouse Wine Bar, 3709 N. St. Mary’s by
the Sunken Gardens. Augie’s kitchen will be open til 7 p.m., but drinks and
snacks will be available for purchase in the upper level wine bar throughout.
For more info, visit: www.augiesbs.com. And a huge thank-you to Eddie of the
Treehouse for coming to our rescue!

Performing on this festive occasion, which will include songs of the season,
will be: Paul “Red” Dvorak (TMC president); Marcus Tedesco (winner of this
year’s Jack Skiles Music Studies Scholarship); Los Dos Estebans (KONO DJ
Steven O. Sellers and son Steve Jr., winner of the 2nd place Jack Skiles
Scholarship), The Neverly Brothers (Ron Young); and Confusion Only (Steve
Bratland & Oscar Laun).

Contact has been made with Santa Claus (AKA: Bob Laxson) at the North Pole, who
is aware of our change in location, and he will be making an appearance during
the evening with a sack of presents to be handed out to winners answering
holiday trivia questions. Master and mistress of ceremonies for this merry
evening will be Steven O. Sellers and Nikki Young.

This event is free and open to the public, so tell your friends!  (And consider
stuffing their stockings this year with the gift of a TMC membership!)

Application forms were available that night for TMC’s new Fred Weiss Memorial

is now posted on the “In Memory” page on the TMC Web site.

Must be a TMC member to apply
(New members always welcome!)

Fred Weiss was a devoted teacher and caring mentor. As a teacher, he always
encouraged his students to gain real-world experience in the music industry. As
a mentor to many, he provided guidance and a plethora of resources to assist in
furthering professional growth in the music industry along with the mantra of
“patience and persistence!”

To keep that principle alive, you are invited to share your talents, skills, and
career goals for the opportunity to receive a one time award of $250 to help you
develop your music career, along with a complimentary one-year membership in the
Texas Music Coalition (TMC), an organization that Fred Weiss helped found in
1998.

James can be a man of few words. But he let's his voice be heard in the lyrics
of his music. Of course, I thought of more topics of discussion after the
interview was over. As so it goes in the land of radio......

And I thought that he kicked ass at the gig last night.

Thanks for tuning in. I'll be chatting with Slaid Cleaves on Saturday, Nov.
28. We'll see how that one goes.

Hey everyone, please support the Alt to Hunger drive at Casbeers this Sat.
evening. The In & Outlaws start up at 7pm. The first 50 folks that donate to
the cause will receive a free cd.

Also.....I'll be hosting this weeks All Star Breakfast with 2 hours of Joe Ely.
7-9am at 90.1fm & streaming at www.tcmnradio.com .

The deadline is this Friday, Nov. 6, to submit your music videos for TMC’s
Third Annual Music Video Showcase. The showcase will take place on Tuesday, Nov.

time at 6:30 p.m. and the screenings beginning at 7 p.m. It is free and open to
the public!

All types of clips and genres of music, old or new, are welcome, whether it’s
a music video you directed, concert clips of your band, home videos of your
child’s orchestra performance or clips of yourself singing karaoke – if it's
music and it's on video, we want to see it!

This year’s showcase will include an “Audience Award,” with a prize to be
awarded for the most popular submission, as voted on by the audience.

All videos must be no more than five (5) minutes in length, and can only be
submitted on DVD. We ask that a representative of each project (musician,
filmmaker, etc.) be present to introduce the project and answer any questions
the audience may have.

the years, in addition to his support of area music, which included being a
charter member and co-founder of TMC and spear-heading the establishment of the
San Antonio College RTVF Department’s Music Business Program. Fred passed away

TMC FUNDRAISER ROCKS SAM’S BURGER JOINT OCT. 24
Lavens named 2009 TMC Artist of the Year

Our thanks to everyone who helped make TMC’s annual fundraiser on Saturday,
Oct. 24, at Sam’s Burger Joint a success!

Providing the music for this entertaining night were: Bobby Baker (who
graciously filled in on short notice for our originally scheduled opening act);
The Melissa Ludwig Band; The Tim and Bob Show; True Stories (with special
singers Melissa Marlowe, Jana Laven & Terry Garza); Claude “Butch” Morgan;
and The S.A. Blue Cats, who arrived “fresh” from playing a gig earlier that
evening. Serving as MC was Doug Fesler, who joined Butch on his harmonica as an
extra treat for us.

And a special commendation goes to True Stories’ drummer Gil Polanco, who
saved the day by staying on to fill in as drummer for the S.A. Blue Cats’,
whose regular drummer, Urban Urbano, had encountered major problems of a
vehicular nature and was unable to join the band at Sam’s.

TMC’s hardworking Fundraiser Chair Patrice Villastrigo, with assistance from
Mary Lou Hymel, presided over the silent auction tables and the door prize
drawings throughout the night.

Winners of the Grand Prizes were: TMC Pres. Paul “Red” Dvorak – a 2-hour
private party concert by The Lavens; Betsy Britton – 4 tickets to the Carver
Community Cultural Center’s Texas Songwriters Circle on Oct. 30, featuring
Terri Hendrix, Lloyd Maines, Willis Alan Ramsey and Tom Frost III; and Rod
Puffer – a $50 Tycoon Flats gift certificate.

Thanks goes out to our many donors of prizes and to all who participated
monetarily in the door prize drawings and purchased items in the silent auction,
with special thanks going to Charter Member Ed Pryor and Anita Jordan for their
generous bids. (A complete list of our wonderful donors is posted at the end of
this newsletter.)

Carol Sowa, organizer of door helpers, would like to express gratitude to
volunteers Paul “Red” Dvorak, Nancy Thomas, Maria Larson, Joe Wolf, Bobby
Baker, Quinn Dixon, Joel Williams, Austin Forrest and Alfonso Mata for their
work throughout the evening that kept things running smoothly.

Pres. Paul Dvorak announced the recipient of the 2009 TMC Artist of the Year
award, which is voted on by TMC members, noting that all three finalists were
winners as far as TMC was concerned, with the ballot count being very close as a
result.

The Lavens (Andreas, Jana, Niko & Rachel) received this year’s Artist of the
Year title, with Andreas, Jana and Rachel on hand to accept the star-shaped
trophy from last year’s winners, The Tim and Bob Show, consisting of Steve and
Kathy Feinstein and Don and Mary Lou Hymel. Trophies were awarded as well to
runners-up Katherine Dawn and Laura Marie. Serving as this year’s Artist of
the Year chair was TMC 2nd Vice President Joe Wolf.

And a toast to the kind folks at Sam’s Burger Joint, 330 E. Grayson,
www.samsburgerjoint.com, for hosting our event!

PHOTOS FROM THE FUNDRAISER & THREE TEXAS MUSIC MONTH PANELS MAY BE VIEWED IN THE
TMC WEB SITE PHOTO GALLERY!

the night! -- Carol)

TMC NEWS
PUBLIC EDITION

Hi, y’all!
Starting today we’re labeling the two versions of the TMC News that are being
sent out to you the MEMBERS EDITION and the PUBLIC EDITION. Both contain all the
current TMC happenings, but the MEMBERS EDITION also contains special
announcements that go out from time to time just to TMC members, noting special
offers or opportunities in music, which is one of the reasons it’s great to be
a TMC member!

To become a TMC member, just drop by the entry table at one of our regular TMC
events, or download an application form from our web site,
www.texasmusiccoalition.org and mail it in to our PO Box below. We’d love to
have you aboard!

Carol Sowa, 1st Vice President
TMC Web & E-News Editor
Texas Music Coalition

PS: This contains a few updates from what went out earlier this week.

COOL OFF AT TMC’S AUG. 18 PANEL @ THE COVE
"Getting Gigs at Local Venues”

Come in out of the hot San Antonio sun and cool off at The Texas Music
Coalition’s free panel on Tuesday, Aug. 18, at The Cove, 606 W. Cypress
(www.thecove.us). This month’s panel topic is "Getting Gigs at Local
Venues,” with panelists TBA.

Schmoozing time starts at 6:30 p.m. and the panel at 7 p.m., followed by TMC’s
popular open mic. Dieter Belletz of SoundzEasy (dbelletz@...) will again
be running sound for us.

For information regarding this program, contact Programs Chair Joel Williams at
joelwms55@.... Updates will be posted on www.texasmusiccoalition.org.

TMC members who have not picked up their new 2009-2010 Membership Directories
are urged to check in at the door that night to get one. (Our thanks to Betsy
Dvorak and Jerry and Maryellen Bailey for all their work on the directory!)

TMC PROVIDING ENTERTAINMENT FOR CHILDSAFE BENEFIT
Saturday, Aug. 15 @ Carrousel Shopping Center

TMC, under the direction of 2nd Vice President Joe Wolf, is providing
entertainment for ChildSafe ‘s Shop-4-A-Cause benefit on Saturday, August 15,
10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Carrousel Shopping Center, 1826 Nacogdoches Rd., in
Alamo Heights.

ChildSafe is an organization that works to restore dignity, trust and hope to
children traumatized by sexual abuse, and a percentage of the proceeds from the
center’s stores that day will go to cover the costs of programs, services and
back-to-school supplies for these children.

Our thanks to TMC members who swiftly responded to the call for volunteers for
this and will be performing: Tom Williams, Ashley Dixon, Maria Larson, Katherine
Dawn, Laura Marie, Bobby Baker, Confusing Minerva, Alan Fisher and special
appearances by Alexis Anthony’s music students from CASSA: Maggie Parkman,
Suzy Rodriguez and Alexis Pietra.

And a big round of applause going out to Confusing Minerva, who will also be
running sound for this event.

In addition to live music by TMCers, there will be door prizes, special store
offers and refreshments. ChildSafe will also be accepting school supplies and
monetary donations.

Child sexual abuse is a serious problem in our society. Each year the reported
number of children being abused continues to climb. Forty percent of females and
sixteen percent of males in San Antonio report having at least one unwanted
sexual experience prior to their 18th birthday.

Approximately 1,700 children were served last year by ChildSafe, who coordinate
the skills of medical, forensic interview, mental health, prosecution, law
enforcement and casework professionals to ensure that children are protected and
treated with dignity and respect. Sixty-seven percent of the families receiving
services at ChildSafe live on an annual income of $15,000 or less and will start
school without the basic tools that are essential to their success without our
help.

NEEDED: 1000 GUITAR PLAYERS
TO BREAK GUINNESS WORLD RECORD
Register ASAP at www.voicesofagratefulnation.org

An attempt by Texans to break the Guinness world record for the biggest guitar
pickin’ session in the history of the world will take place Sunday, Aug. 23,
in Luckenbach from noon until after dark. The actual record attempt will take
place at 2 p.m. However, advance registration is urgently needed by Aug. 10 to
garner publicity and earn Guinness approval.

This “Pickin’ for the Record” project is sponsored by Voices of a Grateful
Nation & The Welcome Home Project, in conjunction with The Kerrville Folk
Festival and Cheatham Street Warehouse, to support our homecoming troops and
their families. Proceeds from this event will support the Welcome Home Project's
Veterans Endowment for Traumatic Brain Injuries.

Germany currently holds the guitar pickin’ world record and around 2000
pickers are needed to beat this. Texas is almost there with about half that
number of volunteering guitarists already signed on, so about 1000 more pickers
are needed. TMC members who have let us know they are participating include
Malcolm Myler, Joe Wolf and Katherine Dawn – and we’re sure there are more!

The registration fee is $10 and all registrants will receive a special event
T-shirt and special event dog tags at the gate on the day of the event. Learn
more, register and get music for the songs to be played at
www.voicesofagratefulnation.org.

Our thanks to member Malcolm Myler who sent us the first word on this!<br><br>

BANDS, VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR PAIGE ANDERSON BENEFIT
Contact Quinn Dixon at quinndixon@...

Quinn Dixon has sent word she is in need of bands and other volunteers for a
benefit she is helping organize for Paige Anderson (Mishaya Paige) on Sunday,
Sept. 27, at Tra’s Country on O’Connor Rd.

Paige, a TMC member for a number of years and a former TMC board secretary, has
been seriously ill with lupus and can only get around via wheelchair or walker
at this point.

Quinn (also a longtime TMC member and former board member, plus head of S.A.
Talent Fest & Business Expo) writes that at the event they will be selling
dinners and holding an auction and raffle, with more details to follow.

Contact her at quinndixon@... to sign up as a performing band that day or
to assist with the auction or tickets at the door.<br><br>

TMC 11th BIRTHDAY SHOWCASE UPDATES
Saturday, Sept. 19 @ La Tuna

The Texas Music Coalition’s 11th Birthday Party and Showcase is just around
the corner on Saturday, Sept. 19, from 6 to 10 p.m. at La Tuna, 100 Probandt.

We’ll have as our guest this year City Councilman David Medina, serving as
“mayor pro tem” to present TMC with Mayor Julian Castro’s proclamation of
October as Texas Music Month. The official ceremony takes place at 6 p.m., so
don’t be late! (TMC officers, chairs and that night’s performers will be
asked to join the councilman afterwards for a photo op.)

Making music for us that night will be: Katherine Dawn, Laura Marie, The Lavens,
Tara Kalyn and Ashley Dixon.

Laura Marie, The Lavens and Katherine Dawn are our three finalists this year for
TMC Artist of the Year, so this will be an opportunity to see them all in one
show before voting ends Oct. 9. TMC members who have not already voted (and
whose dues are current) can pick up a ballot and vote that night.

La Tuna is located just below the Blue Star Arts Complex. For map, menu and more
info, visit: www.latunagrill.com.

Chairing this special event, which is free and open to the public, are Melissa
Ludwig (melissaleithludwig@...) and Mitch Connell
(mitchconnell@...). There will be balloons, birthday cake and plenty of
good cheer! Come early and stay late!<br><br>

UPDATED LINE-UP FOR TMC OCT. 24 FUNDRAISER
SA Blue Cats, Butch Morgan, True Stories,
The Tim & Bob Show, Raleigh Maroon & John Berry

The new line-up for this year’s Saturday, Oct. 24 TMC fundraiser at Sam’s
Burger Joint, 330 E. Grayson (www.samsburgerjoint.com), will feature a variety
of TMC talents and supporters old and new, including the SA Blue Cats, Butch
Morgan, True Stories, The Tim & Bob Show, Raleigh Maroon, John Berry and a
possible surprise performer to be announced.

In the SA Blue Cats, Mark Stewart (guitar/bass/vocals) has been a TMC member for
a number of years and drummer Urban Urbano was part of Lisa "Nadine" Anderson's
band for TMC’s 2001 fundraiser – an Italian dinner/Halloween costume event
held at the now defunct Carlsbad Tavern.

supporters from bygone years. Butch and the H!X, along with True Stories, made
music for our 2005 fundraiser at Rolling Oaks Bar & Grill.

Feinstein, were recipients of the 2008 TMC Artist of the Year award, and Andreas

the Year as part of his family band, The Lavens, who played at last year’s
fundraiser.

John Berry (a multi-year winner in Alamo Music’s Guitar Wars on both electric
and acoustic guitar) is a longtime TMC member, while the Raleigh Maroon duo
(composed of Melissa Ludwig and Mitch Connell) joined us last fall and are
chairs for this year's TMC birthday party and showcase.

The fundraiser will run from 6:30 p.m. till midnight (or longer!), with bidding
on silent auction items ending at midnight. Just a $5 donation gets you into our
fab door prize drawings all night!

To donate items for the fundraiser, contact Fundraiser Chair Patrice Villastrigo
at info@.... Donated items are tax deductible, since TMC is a
501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and may be brought to upcoming TMC panels and
the birthday party.

NOTE: You can now download the form to accompany your donation from the TMC web
site, www.texasmusiccoalition.org. Just click the link beneath the listing of
current donations on the left-hand side of the page. This form assures that you
will get full credit for your donated items.<br><br>

The Texas Music Coalition’s upcoming panel on Tuesday, July 21, will focus on
“Getting Special Event Gigs” and takes place at The Cove, 606 W. Cypress.
Networking time begins at 6:30 p.m., with the panel starting at 7 p.m., followed
by TMC’s popular open mic headed by Programs Chair Joel Williams.

Panelists will include: Marisela Barrera, Program Coordinator for the Main Plaza
Conservancy, who books bands for a variety of exciting music events on Main
Plaza; Rudy Jones, who assists with the Houston Street Festival and has
information on the Kerrville Folk Festival as well; Henry Brun of the Latin
Playerz, veteran of many city and Fiesta events; and additional panelists to be
confirmed.

Running sound for this event will be Dieter Belletz of SoundzEasy.

This event is free and open to all.

TMC’S ANNUAL MEET & GREET COOL EVENT ON HOT DAY!
Scholarship winners & Artist of Year nominees announced
(And music, music, music….!)

Bowing to the ever-rising thermometer, TMC’s 10th annual Meet & Greet on
Sunday, June 28, 5 to 9 p.m., moved from our planned courtyard location to Taco
Garage’s much cooler interior – for which we thank them profusely!

We packed the place early on, with folks there to get their music played by DJ
Joe Barfield, find out who the two winners and runner-up were for the Jack
Skiles Music Studies Scholarships, meet our nominees for TMC Artist of the Year,
and just listen to lots of good music by local folks and chat with them.
Providing and running their sound equipment for the occasion were Daryl
Archuleta and Steve Salazar of Confusing Minerva.

This was the first year TMC offered two Jack Skiles Music Studies Scholarships,
and the 1st place $500 scholarship went to Brandeis High School bassist Marcus
Tedesco, with the $250 scholarship going to TMC member and North East School of
the Arts guitarist Steven S. Sellers (Steve Jr.) – the first time a TMC member
has won one of our scholarships and Steve’s second try in competing for it!
Steve was off in Oregon, but was represented that day by dad, Steven O. Sellers,
also a TMC member, who immediately called him with the good news.

Third place winner Marcus DeLeon, a music business major at San Antonio College
and with KSYM radio, received a complimentary one-year membership in TMC, as did
the scholarship winners and their mentors, Steve Zeserman and Steven O. Sellers,
respectively.

The three winners are very accomplished young men in different areas of music,
and we know the late Jack Skiles, honorary lifetime TMC member for whom this
scholarship is named, would be proud of their achievements and that the
scholarship recipients will continue to pursue their music/music-related studies
in his name.

Applicants also recognized at the event included James Hopkins (St. Mary’s
University) and Eddie Vazquez (University of Notre Dame), with all applicants
receiving certificates and gifts of ASCAP CD openers.

Our thanks to this year’s judges: Jon Johansen, manager of Sam Ash Music, TMC
Past President Nancy Thomas and singer/songwriter Laura Marie. They reported the
high caliber of this year’s applicants made if difficult to narrow it down to
just three winners. Overseeing our scholarship program, as well as the Meet &
Greet, was Nikki Young of PrimaDonna Productions, aided that night by Lee
Hurtado and Chevo Mendoza.

Also recognized that night were the three nominees recently voted as contenders
for 2009 TMC Artist of the Year – TMC members The Lavens, Laura Marie and
Katherine Dawn. Balloting by TMC members current on dues began that night and
the winner (though they are all winners in our book!) will be announced at the
TMC Fundraiser on Saturday, Oct. 24, at Sam’s Burger Joint, with voting
continuing through Oct. 9. (See story below for details.)

We also welcomed a new TMC member that night, Claudio Lopez, a young man from
Converse who is passionate about guitar playing.

The evening ran smoothly, thanks to the help of many volunteers who took shifts
handling the various activities going on. Headed by Carol Sowa, they included:
Jerry and Maryellen Bailey, Nancy Thomas, Bobby Baker, Joel Williams, Maria
Larson, Alan Fisher, Patrice Villastrigo, Alfonso Mata, Rodney Harris and
President Paul “Red” Dvorak.

A big thank you to all who helped make this event a success!

VOTING STARTS FOR TMC ARTIST OF THE YEAR
Laura Marie, The Lavens  & Katherine Dawn

Our three finalists for 2009 TMC Artist of the Year (in no particular order –
we’ll keep randomly rotating them in our postings) are Laura Marie, The Lavens
and Katherine Dawn. All are outstanding musical artists, have been on the area
scene for quite awhile and are equally deserving of the honor.

All TMC members whose dues are current are eligible to vote – one vote per
person. Ballots with the finalists’ names will be available at the upcoming
TMC July 21 panel, the Aug. 18 panel, the Sept. 19 birthday party/showcase, and
the Oct. 6 Texas Music Month panel. They can also be downloaded from the TMC
MySpace at www.myspace.com/texasmusiccoalition. (Click into the Artist of the
Year announcement.)

Ballots may be turned in at the above-mentioned TMC events or mailed to Artist
of the Year Chair Joe Wolf at 3414 Buzz Aldrin, San Antonio, TX 78219 or
e-mailed it to him at antiqtrader@....

Voting ends Oct. 9 and the winner will be announced at the TMC Fundraiser on
Saturday, Oct. 24, at Sam’s Burger Joint. (Remember, you must be a member
current on dues to vote!)

TMC “rap sheets” on our nominees:

Laura Marie has served as TMC Treasurer and Secretary and assisted on other
committees. She’s helped out doing entry table duty and performed at numerous
TMC events, plus been a songwriting panelist for us and a TMC scholarship judge.
(Last TMC Show: TMC’s Holiday Party Showcase, Dec. 6, 2008, at OrderUp at The
Colonnade.)

The Lavens have played at many of our TMC events. Rachel is a past TMC
Membership Chair and Andreas has been a songwriting panelist for us. They’ve
also run and provided their sound equipment for TMC events and helped out with
door duty.
(Last TMC Show: TMC Fundraiser, Oct. 25, 2008, at Sam’s Burger Joint.)

Katherine Dawn has served as a songwriting and publishing panelist for us, done
entry table duty and performed at a number of TMC events. She has also been a
mentor to two younger TMC members, Ashlee Rose and Bailey Renee.
(Last TMC Show: TMC’s Holiday Party Showcase, Dec. 6, 2008, at OrderUp at The
Colonnade.)

Here are edited excerpts from their web site bios:

LAURA MARIE
Singer/songwriter Laura Marie, a recent Americana Music Times “Artist of the
Month,” was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, where she performed and
recorded with local bands Sofa Kingdom and Things Between and did voice over and
backing vocal work in a number of local studios. She graduated from St. Mary's
University with a degree in music education and was a grade school choir
director before giving in to her compulsive lyric writing habit and becoming a
full time musician. Her first full-length solo CD titled, Drawn, was released in
2007 and was co-produced by five-time Grammy nominated producer, Mack Damon.
Fans are quickly hooked on her own brand of pop-folk songwriting. Her lyrics are
both touching and personal. Laura Marie gets to the heart of the matter with a
voice somewhat familiar, yet distinctly her own. As a songwriter, she is known
for her poignant and striking wordplay, while her smooth vocal style has been
described as “smooth as
100 year-old scotch.” Laura Marie's music has been favorably compared to
songwriters Norah Jones, Natalie Merchant, Shawn Colvin and John Mayer. In her
personal life, Laura Marie is a happily married mom of two and a marathon
runner. She writes: “… I can look for things to justify my fears or look for
proof of love. It's my choice. One will hold me down and the other will set me
free. So, here is what I choose to see: My family – I am loved and supported.
I have an endless supply of hugs, kisses and I am never alone. I know where I
belong; My music – I have something to give. I have a way to share my deepest
feelings and a way to connect with people I may never get to meet. …”

THE LAVENS
The Lavens are a family band from San Antonio, Texas, with regular gigs and a
growing fan base. They play original Americana and Roots Rock style songs and
covers from fellow Texas artists. Think Melissa Etheridge and Johnny Cash, with
Stevie Ray's guitar and family harmonies and you have The Laven sound. Andreas
and Jana have played in bands for the last fifteen years. Son Niko has
progressed from a 16-year-old blues drummer with an awesome group of teen
musicians to a singer/songwriter lead guitarist who can stand alone or with a
full band. Daughter Rachel has been wowing audiences with her original
compositions since picking up the guitar at age ten. Niko and Rachel have
written over 28 songs between them, spanning the Americana genre from folk to
blues/rock. Niko's songs have a bluesier touch while Rachel's tend toward folk.
Individually they have been featured in Seventeen Magazine’s “Top Ten Teen
Bands in the Nation” and BBC's “The Next Big
Thing” international competition. Together, The Lavens have made it to the
top of the “World Folk Battle of the Bands”
(www.worldfok.com/bobscores.html) and were voted #1 Americana Band '07 in the
San Antonio Current's "BEST OF 07" and Best Band at the Uncle Bill Roach Band
Texas Music Festival. Instrumentation: Rachel Laven (16) – lead vocals,
singer/songwriter, guitarist; Niko Laven (23) – lead vocals,
singer/songwriter, lead guitar; Jana Laven (mom) – lead vocals, harmony
vocals; Andreas Laven (dad) – singer/songwriter, bass guitar & vocals. They
frequently are joined onstage by friends playing lead guitar, accordion, fiddle
and harmonica, with Sal Guajardo playing drums.

KATHERINE DAWN:
Katherine Dawn, AKA "Dawn Davis," of Boerne, Texas, started singing in church.
Started writing and playing guitar at age nine. Started playing for tips in the
South Texas bars at thirteen years old. In between being part of the pit crew
for her pro race-driving dad, Tommy Davis Jr., she would learn chords and tips
about the business from her Uncle Carl Davis, her musical godfather Augie Meyers
and all of his buddies at the ranch. KD's second band, Cypress, was with her
hospital nursery “twin,” Clay Meyers. Her music comes from
Gospel/blues/country roots, plus rock and roll. She writes: Nothing' like
learning' your chops on the tour bus with Augie's crew. “Big Bill” Lister
taught me a lot about never giving in. What a run we had in Comfort, Texas,
every weekend at the Hill Country Opry. Weldon Lister Jr. and I sure played some
heartfelt melodies together. To just wrap it up, I'd say I grew up around Texas
Music Royalty. Today I play acoustic and
electric guitar, bass guitar, 5-string banjo; I write, I produce, I am so
satisfied and grateful to be an artist and family lady. I love playing in THE
Ashlee Rose Band, writing and playing with longtime amigo Robin Howell. Augie
and Clay are still my touchstones and business gurus. I love knowing that the
entertainment business is never predictable and after years of vowing never to
date anybody in the band again – it was a good choice to marry the drummer.
Without my talented husband’s encouragement and support, I would not STILL be
“Just Me with the music, honest and forthright.” He reminds me to never
underestimate myself and has made it possible for me to raise our three children
and continue to evolve as an artist and be appreciated as a true friend in good
times and bad. How do you describe almost 37 years of influence and list all of
the bands, musicians and projects that have made me the performing songwriter I
am today? I'm so grateful
of all of the love and support from the musicians over the years and the sets
and sessions to come … numerous self-titled releases on His Hill Records,
class act musicians, bands, years, days and hours of doing what you've been
called to do.

DONNIE MEALS ASSUMES LATE FRED WEISS’ POSITION IN SAC RTVF DEPT.
Fred, a TMC founder, had recommended Donnie as our first president

Longtime adjunct RTVF professor at San Antonio College (SAC) Donnie Meals has
been tapped to assume the full-time position there of the late Fred Weiss, who
unexpectedly passed away last October.

Fred, a mentor to many in radio, television, film and music, was a founding
member of TMC and the one who suggested back in 1998 that we approach Donnie
(owner/producer of Edit Point Studios) to serve as TMC’s first president,
which we did, and thankfully he said “yes!”

We can’t help but feel that Fred would be pleased with Donnie’s new
promotion at SAC.

PS:  Donnie & Sharon Meals celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary on June 26
by re-creating their famous wedding party at Tycoon Flats, with Los #3 Dinners
again providing the music and many of the original guests in attendance.
(Weather was a tad cooler the first time around though!) Congratulations, Donnie
& Sharon!!

there's lots of that spinning off from rebirth, dirty dozen etc. going on, and
to my ears it's a very good thing. fresh perspectives on established trad NO
brass sound and all. i had the pleasure of seeing rockin' dopsie jr. at city
park with a funked-up smokin' hot zydeco nine-piece that was so tight it made my
head buzz. dopsie sr., (RIP) would be proud. got to be at rockin' bowl's new
location grand opening to hear nathan & the cha-chas break the joint in right.
(new place is old paint (sherwin williams?) warehouse on carrolton west of
original location. not quite as funky as old place, but layout is much better,
ceiling's higher, and automated scoring for bowling. (woo-hoo!)

thanks to the wonders of the internet, i get to listen to all of the music
mentioned above (re: who's tickling your ears) on the most excellent wwoz
http://www.wwoz.org a station i came to truly adore and admire. like ksym, it's
all volunteer dj's and creativity is encouraged. (at this moment, there's a guy
playing only albums rescued and reclaimed from the aftermath of katrina. most
records were dug from the mud and cleaned) bob french of the original tuxedo
band - a crusty, cool old fart does a morning show and tells who he's pissed off
at today. 'course it's back to tcmn at 3. you folks are still doing it right,
and this time i really mean it. keep it up.

some stuff from tc playlists that's got me twisted up: eilen jewell (where'd she
come from?), rob lutes, dave alvin & guilty women, daddy, the new johnny bush,
mistix, li'l mo, and the chris gaffney tribute just to name a few.

***almost forgot - i also got to see jerry giddens at an acoustic gig in the
quarter with mike ryan. gidden's voice was better than ever thanks to couple
years rest. and mike is a SA homey and big tc fan. both guys pass on much love
to all of ya'll.

lately, I've been in the "let's head out to the water & I'm ready for a festive
beverage" mood, so cds staying in my vehicle for the summer are...

Larry Lange & his lonely Knights "Live @ Evangeline Cafe"
Beau Sample's cool Chicago band, the Del Moroccos "Blue Black Hair"
the Insomniacs "At Least I'm Not With You"
and I gotta have the wolves, so Los Lobos "Live at the Fillmore"

Maybe I'll get back to more of a serious listening mood when it's not so damn
hot.
