When I talked to TH in late august I think it was I was told that Bismusic was
having problems but I don't know of what kind. Of course they said the CD should
be out in September...not quite. But hopefully it will be available outside Cuba
and France soon.

As for Bakuleye I expect the death of their singer put a crimp in their CD
plans, but I haven't actually asked about it.

This new CD of Pascualito Cabrejas is most probably his best achievement with 12
tracks dedicated to the dancers !

Hi everyone

I use an old fashioned email program to post to
Timba Geeks, but read your messages on the web
(http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/timba_geeks/messages).
So I hit "expand" and it's a very long page that
usually spans a couple of days, maybe a week.
Many posters edit the quoted text in their
message, so that you get a sense of context. I
like that, because it's easy to read, and the
archives on the web actually look good.

There are some list members - you know who you
are - who never do that, and simply leave all
quoted text in place - sometimes an entire
digest! The result is that their message becomes
very hard to read on the web, and frequently it's
unclear what someone's contribution actually was.
This week for instance, I see my post about the
word "charangón" quoted three times in a thread
about Rusdel. WTF?

So let's try and keep this place fun to read by
removing unnecessary quotes. When in doubt (or
lazy), just remove all text from others - we'll
know what it's about.

Thanks!

Chris (leaving for Havana this Wednesday)

Just found this;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7n6guBwlHRo

Got to say I find Gilles Peterson pretty annoying, and there are a couple of
other official clips on YouTube that I find just too irritating and cliche
ridden to post.

What I hadn't quite appreciated is that his new album isn't just an ordinary
throwing together of existing tracks, but he seems to have re-recorded a variety
of things with contemporary musicians following a vaguely Buena Vista model, so
it will be interesting I think. So what I heard was kind of the 'house band' for
that, fronted up by Danay who I must say impressed me, and a couple of other
folk. So credit to him for getting that together and I guess letting people know
there's Cuban music beyond Buena Vista itself. But he is presenting it as
discovering  underground young Cuba and then coming up with stuff like Cubanito;
not necessarily the new kids on the block, or especially underground really. And
his 'down wiv the youf' persona grates a bit with me. Still, as I say he may
well have an interesting album here and it's getting music where it may have not
reached before.

So.... the event I went to was sponsored as a Havana Club promotion and to
launch the cd and make people aware of it, which it has done, and provided a
splendid and cheap night out, so that'll count as a success then.

Nice to see something sponsored by Havana Club. They don't sponsor anything
here. We can only get Bacardi, which then severely limits your options in
regard to talent from Cuba.

Just got in from the first Havana Club/Gilles Peterson compialtion cd launch
night.

Here's how it's promoted;
'Live onstage, 8 piece afro-cuban jazz group Havana Cultura Project plus direct
from Havana and their first UK gigs EVER, rappers OGGUERE and MC/nusoul singer
DANAY! If you like Orishas, you MUST check these rappers out!

Promoting the brand new double CD on Brownswood Records "Gilles Peterson
Presents Havana Cultura", out now and featuring Ogguere, Roberto Fonseca, Gente
D'Zona, Obsesion, Kelvis, Danay, Cubanito 20.02, Yusa, Kumar and many more top
young Cuban musicians......que viva la musica cubana!'

(Actually elsewhere I've heard the Gilles Peterson laughably presented presented
as the 'underground sound of young Cuba', which is hardly the case, but I
digress).

Anyway, we started off with fairly straight Latin Jazz, moved through some stuff
a bit reminiscent of Interactivo/Temary, and on to some hip-hop-ish stuff. I've
got to say I really enjoyed it and would suspect most timba fans would find
plenty there to enjoy. They were billed as being on for an hour. The band did
more than that to start with, did a Femi Kuti cover as an encore, then messed
around improvising bits of this and that so there was more than 90 minutes of
live music in the end.
For an entrance price of £5 that included a cubra libre and a mojito it was hard
to beat.
I believe there are more nights to come, in Manchester and elsewhere; I don't
have details just now but I suggest you get searching!!!

Yes, the bathroom post will come one day, along with where to eat. I guess
they could go together ...

Seriously your Havana Guide is like the Timba Tourist Bible. I'm sure you have
saved many people lost of time and disappointment. Finding concerts, getting
around etc is a challenge at best.

Still waiting for your report on the bathroom situation though...and of course
now with the toilet paper shortage...

My tip to travelers:
Always take a large supply of little pocket kleenex packages with you. You
never know when you will find a bathroom and whether is will be usable or
whether it is more advisable to find a drain in the floor to pee in and of
course...there may well be no toilet paper either.

So kleenex and hand sanitizer...a must.

Well, this is indeed the official story ;-)

The result is that there has been a growing complicity between Michel and
Norberto ! That was nice to see on stage .. much better than before...

Michel is singing now most of the songs...
Actually they played in the south of France , Marseille, a number of old songs
such as :

La Bala de Billy
Dicen que dicen
Que cosas tiene la vida
La borrachera
De la Timba a Pogolotti

on top of :
Vino a comerse La Habana (sung by Michel this time)
Un Poquito a Reves (by Norberto)
Se parece aquel (Michel)
Vecina prestame el cubo (Norberto)
Si me quieres conocer (Michel)
Calla Calla

They also introduced the coro of a new song, I beleive :
"Yo soy un loco
un loco con una moto
un loco con celular
celular que tira foto"

The audience was huge, packed and enthousiastic

It was the first time I saw that many people for Cuban Music in the South of
France

I am very happy for Pupy, especially after all the shakeout of all these moves
in the band...

Rusdel will definitively come back... although the story is a bit stretched...

research (only a bit) Orquesta Revé seems to be the name that was generally
used during Elio Revé Matos period. At least searching at Descarga that's the
name they use and the name also appears on some CD/DVD covers. It seems that
with Changüí en Casa de Nora (elito's first CD) that they started using Elito
Revé Jr with the exception of the 50th anniversary CD where the cover says
Orquesta Revé. So really to me the use of Orquesta Revé is a more general term
that covers both the Elio and Elito periods, although more correctly it may be
really about the Elio period.

Yes its true Pupy told me the same on Friday (Rusdel DID NOT defect)

also Pupy commented to Radio programme(Rome) that Rusdel is in Cuba right now &
may join them in the coming gigs...

Exact words

"Esta con nosotros! Esta con nosotros todavia no hay ningun cuento"

-----------

In Rome (during Carusso concert) he states that Rusdel lost his passport.... &
thats the reason of the dealy
