José "Pepito" Gómez

with his full band

José "Pepito" Gómez has taken the U.S. by storm since his May 2008 arrival from  Cuba. He has two NY Times rave reviews under his belt, received an award from  France for best male singer, has a worldwide fan base and his latest CD with Cuban band Pupy y Los Que Son Son, was nominated for a CubaDisco award.  He has earned the respect and admiration of fellow musicians, press and fans. His popularity all over the world was highlighted by sold-out venues like Italy ’s 5000 person capacity La Tropical.  Gomez also received an award in Cuba for his song on environmental awareness, “Tiempo Dificiles” (Hard Times).  His tenor voice, both beautiful and strong, has a unique timbre which is very rarely found.  Recent sold out shows include Yoshi’s Jazz club in California and the Miami ’s Fillmore Jackie Gleason theatre.

"Mr. Gomez, who was a member of the band Pupy y Los Que Son Son before he left Cuba last year ... is another order of performer."

-Ben Ratliff, The New York Times

“All excellent singers have a special tone: it’s something beyond issues of pitch, power and phrasing, some personal grain that makes them strong and strange. The Cuban singer Pepito Gómez’s vocal tone is … a beneficent alarm, a positive shout”

-Ben Ratliff, The New York Times

"What a Voice! - For the first hour of last night's rehearsal Pepe Gómez sang with a rhythm section of just piano, bass and clave, revealing every resonant nuance of his magnificent tenor voice as he soared through the string of classic hits he created with Pupy Pedroso y Los Que Son Son. Every note is perfectly in-tune, perfectly controlled, and capable of exploding into euphoric emotion at any instant. It took me 8 years to finally hear this guy live but now I fully understand what all the buzz was about."

-Kevin Moore, Timba.com

Just wanted to thank the over 500 people who came out for the Beleza party with Pepito Gomez and Dj Medina last Saturday. I have to admit I was tired when I got to the party but I stayed until it ended at 4 am. What a nice group of people. There were a lot of Brazilians, Cubans and just a great international crowd with great energy. The organizers have it once a month and they can be found on facebook under Beleza NYC. I especially loved the live drumming and all the great music and how everyone really danced for 4 hours straight!

Here are some great photos!
Thanks again for a great experience!

They say that Cuba and Puerto Rico are "two wings of a bird" and the latest collaboration between Cuba and Puerto Rico is the new single "No me saques de tu vida" lyrics and music by Jos Gmez "Pepito", Jos Lugo & Juan Jos Hernndez  "Juanchi". Pepito needs no introduction to timba fans. His brilliant tenor voice is unmistakable and his iconic interpretations have left an indelible mark on contemporary Cuban dance music. Also a composer, Pepito contributed the mega-hit "Un poquito al revs", including the coro that gave the name to the award-winning CD "Tranquilo que yo controlo" by Pupy y Los Que Son Son. Since his arrival in the US in 2008 Pepito has performed  to rave reviews and recorded with a number of artists, and he is now part of Jos Lugo's latest project in the Guasbara series as composer and lead vocalist on the single "No me saques de tu vida", which premiers on Puerto Rican radio tomorrow!

Jos Lugo is one of the most important Latin producers with many Grammy nominations and eight wins under his belt. Lugo produced, arranged and played piano on the single, and you will recognize his style with some interesting and unexpected harmonic changes and even a bit of a timba teaser at 3:30. Juanchi is the director of the group San Juan Habana. An ex-singer for Adalberto lvarez, he is the composer of such hits as El Gran Combo's "Arroz con habichuela" and Gilberto Santa Rosa's "El conteo regresivo", as well as "Ella menea" by NG2. This is truly a stellar combination.

So how did Los Josses begin this collaboration? Pepito tells us:
Jos Lugo and I met through Issac Delgado who referred him to me. Jos Lugo invited me to sing on a production that he was doing for Pablo Aubia, bassist and director of the group Batambo. Mr. Aubia is Argentinean and living in Geneva. I went to Puerto Rico and we met, and after that we stayed in contact and formed a good friendship. Jos Lugo had now finished the first production of his CD "Guasbara". It was a project with a big orchestra where singers such as Gilberto Santa Rosa, Cano Estremera, Vctor Manuel, Issac Delgado and Herman Olivera participated and it was nominated for an American Grammy. With the passage of time our friendship led us to work together. He proposed that I do two songs to start with for the project "Guasbara 2"  with a 7-musician format and the possibility of doing live performances. We recorded two songs, this one and another that is in the mixing process called "Si te quiere sola regresa" . The lyrics and music are mine, and the arrangement, production and piano are by Jos Lugo.

"No me saques de tu vida" was recorded in Puerto Rico at Jos Lugo's Guasbara Records and will be available at iTunes next week. These are the two first songs prepared for the CD Guasbara Combo.

This is a post I put up on Facebook today. It's not directly timba because it's about the "Latin jazz" category being eliminated by the NARAS (National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences)...the Grammy organization. This will have a huge negative impact on many of the musicians we know and love.

Please email them and object to this change:  http://www.grammy.org/contact. And please consider attending the NY NARAS Chapter meeting on Monday at 6 p.m., address below.

Thank you,

Dear friends,

Transdiaspora Network, an HIV/AIDS prevention non-profit based in Brooklyn , will host its Fourth Annual Benefit Concert at Tribeca's Canal Room on May 12th, 2011, starting at 7pm. I am a member of the host committee for this event and I hope you will join me in supporting this great organization and the work they do!

Transdiaspora Network conducts innovative programs that engage at risk teens in a different dialogue about HIV awareness and prevention. Youth empowerment and capacity building are cornerstones of TDN's programs, providing a vital service in under-served communities in Brooklyn , the borough where the highest number of adolescents get diagnosed with HIV/AIDS nationally.

This year, special guest Cyrille Aimee, finalist in the 2010 Thelonious Monk Vocal Competition, will be performing for the evening. Internationally renowned and praised for her unparalleled abilities, Cyrille is an undeniable talent in the modern age of jazz. Join me at this exciting event, and help promote HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention, while enjoying a fantastic evening of jazz!

Go here to see pictures:  http://www.timba.com/blog_posts/tiempo-libre-photos-from-santa-cruz#comments

Pictures are from Tom Ehrlich, and here's the short version for writer Kevin Moore...this was an incredible show. The audience went wild.

Tomorrow Tiempo Libre with SFJAZZ Education Director Rebeca Mauleon will do a timba workshop at The Jazzschool in Berkeley, CA, and on Sunday, they play Novellus Theatre in Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in SF. The Bay Area is a cool, cool place to be this October 2011. Thanks, Tiempo Libre!!!!!

Kevin's text:

"Tiempo Libre really tore it up in Santa Cruz last night! Ultra-agressive timba in the extreme. Pututi III is incredible and the whole club, even by Kuumbwa standards, was absolutely on fire. The bassist Tebelio was also insanely good tonight. Make it to the clinic on Saturday and the concert on Sunday if you can. It's not obvious from this photo, but from a straight-on view, the new trumpet player, (who was also the founding trumpet player), Ral Rodrguez, is a dead ringer for Paul Shaffer."

Musicians:

ROMAN DIAZ is a master percussionist from Havana, where elders in the fine arts of classic Afro-Cuban musical traditions trained him. In the USA, he organized a performance ensemble called "Omi Odara" a Lukumi phrase meaning "pure water," or "water that blesses," because "there is nothing more pure than water." They perform ritual Santeria, Abakua, and Palo Monte music, as well as continue the rumba and Son lineages of Arsenio Rodriguez, Chano Pozo, and Ignaciio Pineiro’s Septeto Nacional, all of whom drew upon Cuba’s African heritage in their music. Contrary to the typical use of these traditions as "spice" for "world music," Diaz’s ensemble is distinguished for respecting these traditions through artful and passionate performances based on deep ritual knowledge. They entertain while they educate.

Rafael Monteagudo arrived in the US in 2000 from Havana, Cuba. His areas of focus include jazz, funk, fusion, Latin Jazz, and Afro-Cuban. He plays drum set, timbales, congas, bata, and bongos. It was the thriving musical environment that he came from that inspired him to play drums at the young age of eight. He grew up in a neighborhood in Havana that has produced some of the most famous Cuban musicians. The musical traditions in Havana are rich in both popular and folkloric music. It was through sharing the strong African traditions that are inherent in Cuban culture that Rafael gained such a wide range of styles. Rafael continued his studies at the prestigious Escuela Nacional de Arte (ENA) and later at Felix Varela Conservatory in Havana. While in Cuba, Mr. Monteagudo had the opportunity to work with some of the best-known Cuban jazz and folkloric groups, including Calle 42, Eddy Mesa, jazz quartet Carisma and the Conjunto Folklorico of the Univeristy of Havana to name a few.
Singer:

Erick Barberia graduated the ENA as a dance teacher and began his professional career working in Matanzas as a dancer, actor and percussionist, with the Proyecto Korimacao, directed by the Actor Manuel Porto. After Korimacao, Erick returned to Havana to teach Cuban Folkloric song and percussion in the ENA and in the Centro Nacional de Escuelas de Arte (CENSEA)Erick is crowned Omo Eleggua, Awo Orunmila and comes from the Afro-Cuban Yoruba family of Papo Angarica. Erick, Omo Aña, was consecrated in the tambor Aña bi, of the deceased Nicolas Angarica and one of the oldest Tambores that exists in Cuba today. With Aña bi, Erick has played with many other drummers such as, Angel Bolaños, Regino Jiménez, Papo Angarica, Nene Carvajal, Alfredo Coyute, Cristóbal Larrinaga and many others.
Erick currently lives and works in San Francisco, California. Working as a musician, he has had the pleasure to work with artists such as, Chucho Valdez, Papo Angarica, Dreiser Durruty, John Santos Jesús Díaz, Sandy Pérez, Rebeca Mauleon, Pepito Gomez, Fito Reinoso.

Beyond Salsa Piano Vol. 11

Available at 11:11 on 11-11-11!

Beyond Salsa Piano Volume 11 - Cesar Pupy Pedroso - Los Van Van - Los Que Son Son - Cuban Music News

As everyone knows, timba geeks are as superstitious as baseball players, so I'm releasing Volume 11 of Beyond Salsa Piano, the second on Pupy Pedroso, at 11:11 today, 11-11-11 (Nov. 11, 2011). The convergence of all those elevens was just too tempting. And if you're really a crazy numerologist, consider that PupyPedroso, BeyondSalsa, and TimbaDotCom each have eleven letters! Of course, "coincidence" also has eleven letters ...

But in ANY case, Volume 11 covers Pupy's work with Van Van in the mid-80s, during which time he wrote several of the songs Los Que Son Son now plays live, like El buenagente and Calla calla. For these, we include complete piano/bass charts of the modern versions he's playing now. So, the book (144 pages) and its companion audio product (94 tracks) will hopefully go live at 11:11 a.m. Pacific Standard Time, but there's a small chance that it will get delayed to 11:11 p.m. [Kevin Moore]
