On Saturday August 1st, the World's Best Marching Music will be on display in Allentown, PA at the
Drum Corps International (or DCI) East Regional Championships. The cost is $15 or $20 depending on where we sit.
If you don't know what Drum & Bugle Corps is...it is marching music's major league. There are more than 20 groups of 150 kids of high school and college age that tour the country all summer and compete with one another ,culminating in the DCI World Championships on August 8th. For more information go to dci.org or talk to any of the TJ Band staff.
The purpose of this email is to begin to put together a group trip to experience this show LIVE. To be clear, this is strickly, voluntary... not a mandatory TJ Band event. This is just me, some band parent friends and any marching members of the TJ High Band that wish to go see something amazing. This will be right in the middle of Band Camp. It will be a great way to get excited about the upcoming season.
This trip could be as small as, whoever can fit into my tan mini-van or a large caravan of minivans. Mr. Kurdt has reserved 3 each 15 passenger vans, so first come first served. To begin to gauge interest in this event, please respond to this email if you would like to go.
Also, I will be around after percussion / color guard rehearsals to answer questions about this event. I want to buy the tickets soon so, please email me. The sooner I buy tickets the better our seats will be.
Now, a short story and a then a Bonus offer:
When I was in 9th grade, my Junior High Band Director and his wife took me and my brother to see our first Drum and Bugle Corp show and I was completely blown away. I can still sense the bleachers shaking from the battery and I can still feel the chill bumps I got when the Blue Devil's and Scout's horn lines blew my hair back.
The Bonus offer ? If you are a freshman or a first year marching member, you can come as my guest, in memory of my Middle School Band Director, the late Chet Hedgecoth. At a minimum, your ticket will be paid for and if you ride in my van, I will be your host all day.
That's it for now,
I hope to hear from you soon,
Mike Hillman
