Orbit Room's 13th anniversary party Saturday, Nov. 10

It's kind of snuck up on everyone this year, but once again it's time to celebrate the anniversary of the opening of Toronto's hippest live music venue, Orbit Room, on the second floor at 580 College St. on TO's Little Italy strip.

The party, featuring host band A Team, takes place this Sat., November 10, and that night we'll also be celebrating the 57th birthday of club co-owner Tim Notter.

In addition to A Team, which is an all-star packed group of Soul/Funk veterans who deliver a frenetic and fantastically dance-friendly action-packed repertoire every time they play, you can also expect to see some special guests drop by to sit in.

Get there early if you want to be guaranteed of getting in and super early (doors open at 9) if you want to get a good seat up front near the action!

Take a spin in Orbit! Gary 17

Hey folks, I'm helping host the first anniversary show at Big Ronnie's
Bar & Grill at 1162 Danforth Ave. (across from the beer store at
Greenwood) tomorrow and there's lots of spaces left for performers.
There'll be a drum kit and amps and PA so just come out and we'll figure
out where to fit you in. (The band Happy Ending performers 6-9 but other
spots, from 1:30 p.m till 6 and after 9, are fairly flexible!)

Hope to see you there --these are nice people (see cover story Issue
#405) and this place deserves our support.

Here is a post from Facebook on Ray Wallace that's written by Drew Masters from M.E.A.T Magazine.

Sincerely

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ray "Black Metal" Wallace -- legendary Toronto metal entrepreneur, and my personal friend -- succumbed early this morning to complications resulting from a brain aneurysm he suffered just under two weeks ago.

I have written a lengthy and personal note regarding Ray that, should you desire to read it, is at this link here on the MEAT Facebook page:
http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=9913325295&topic=3565

His family is in need of financial help at this time. Donations can be made at any TD CANADA TRUST and deposited directly into the following account. I am told that ANY amount will be accepted and appreciated:
Branch: 1790
Account Number: 5249
Account Name: Marguerite Wallace

I will forward funeral information as I receive it.

FYI, his organs have gone on to help others have the gift of life.

This is great and tragic personal loss for me.
Ray was my close friend for 25 years.
I am devastated.

To many of you, I will see you both soon at Ray's funeral, and at the REVOLVER show this Friday night at Rock & Roll Heaven.

Thanks to ALL of you for your emails and phone calls of support. They have all been so VERY much appreciated.

Here's to the Black Metal !!!
May his spirit live on forever!
Drew Masters

Subject: Memorial for the late Norm Hacking next Thurs Dec 6 at Renaissance

Earlier in the week I learned of the death on Sunday of Norm Hacking,
one of the finest singer-songwriters --and an exceptionally decent human
being who played a big role in encouraging me to get involved with the
local music scene 20 years ago.

I'll be doing a story in next week's issue but I wanted to ensure
everyone has the heads up on a special night next Thursday, Dec. 6 at
Renaissance Cafe commemorating Norm and his music. His son, Ben, will be
on hand at 5:30 for a brief memorial service and then from 8 p.m. Ben

Hey Gary 17,
I'll do my best to be there as Norm was a huge inspiration too my coming out to play at his OpenStages. It was with him that I met so many others like myselve who played the same kind of music that we all loved.
He was my fellow lover of cats, especially them orange coloured-cats who make the best freinds :)

I do recall that day when I knocked on your door and asked you for a copy of T.O. Nite Magazine about 20 years ago.

Ben
will host the open stage as many of Norm's musical friends and fans come

17 to-nite #407 – December 6 – 19, 2007 R.I.P. Norm Hacking
Son Ben hosting open stage tribute at Renaissance Café Thurs. Dec. 6
Norm Hacking, who passed away from a sudden heart attack on Sun. Nov. 25
at the age of 57, was not only one of Canada's premier Folk
singer-songwriters, sadly constrained in his career and accomplishments
by a serious weight problem, he was also a delightfully open, generous
and playful human being. His sense of humour and his passion may have
jostled for prominence at times, but in Norm they never seemed to
conflict, each complementing the other to make him a witty and wise
observer of life and love. I'm not going to rehash the list of his
many stellar songs and several albums —you can get all that info
from the website that will now be part of his memorial and legacy,
www.normhacking.com. The fact that a passel of fellow artists deemed his
material so worthy that they gathered together in 2001 to produce a
cover album of his songs speaks eloquently to his importance as an
artist. But for me and others who got to know him over the years, Norm
had an unforgettable impact on our lives as a person. He exemplified a
never-say-die spirit that was a powerful inspiration. Despite battling
serious health issues for years and suffering the slings and arrows of
various outrageous misfortunes, he never lost his childlike sense of
wonder or gratitude for the small pleasures of a single moment, as his
songs well document. He kept on keepin' on and his memory will keep
on for many, many years to come. He was a huge inspiration to me as a
performer, as an industry participant and human being. Twenty years ago
he helped nurture the seeds of this magazine by encouraging me to live
my dream and become a part of the local music scene. Norm's son Ben
Hacking will host a brief memorial gathering at 5:30 p.m. on Thurs. Dec.
6 at Renaissance Café, 1938 Danforth Ave. (1 block west of Woodbine)
and from 8 p.m. will host an open stage for what is expected to be a
stellar assembly of Norm's many musical friends and admirers. I
shall be among them. Keep singing those Skysongs Norm. -Gary 17

Last night I went down to The Horseshoe Tavern to attend the 60th Anniversary of Toronto's most renown landmark club. I only just got there long after 9:30 & at the door I saw promoters Jeff Cohen & Craig Laskey greeting people at the door. When I got into the back room of the entertainment session of the room there was some cake and right there I immediately had a few bites. Earlier before my arrival they had an industry only bash that only last a few hours which unfortunately I couldn't attend but I'm sure there were a lot of who's who in attendance that night which some of them stayed on for the real show when the artists showrd up. Around 10:10 the band began to get ready to play and the first band that was up was The Sadies (www.thesadies.net) who had been playing the roots alternative Country Music going back a couple of years now & they still look the same even though I hadn't seen them perform for awhile. Unfortunately I didn't bring a pad & paper to write anything down of the songs & some of the guest performers that sat in but during their set they invited Greg Keelor from Blue Rodeo that did a few songs which he did an obscure Lee Hazelwood song called "Working The Railroad" that got people up and dancing. This was my first time hearing that song and I myself was into it as well. Next up was Gord Downie from The Tragically Hip who I saw to months ago back in February of this year at The A.C.C. with two friends & my date Wendy Fuller. Gord did about three songs & the last song he had the place going crazy. Gord Downie is a amazing front man and he certainly put his soul right into that song. Next up are two members from The Waco Brothers that did a punk rock song which they certainly got the place shakin and I can tell you they put a no holds bar performance which they even took the mike stand off. In rock music there are no rules as long you know how to play & sing the music right. This was a demonstration these Waco Brothers did and it was quite a good performance. After their set I went downstairs in hoping to meet Gord Downie but unfortunately the head security won't allow me to see him so after a few minutes waiting and waiting, I decided to go home. The Horseshoe Tavern 60th Anniversary will be happening for this whole month of December & on New Years Eve The Sadies will be playing their yearly bash at The Horseshoe Tavern.

This Monday I'll be doing three Ed The Sock Tapings at Wallace Studio's starting around 2:00 PM

Have yourselves a good weekend

Sincerely
Max Brand

btw For their last set Bruce Good & Margaret Good (husabnd & wife and parents of Travis & Dallas) did a Bob Wills song which again I can't remember the title but there is no doubt they'll be a review written in next weeks NOW paper.

Brighten the year's longest night at my Sat Dec. 22 Christmas Solstice Party!

I always find the Winter Solstice to be the most bittersweet time of the year.

Bitter because the weather's usually cold (and if the start to this winter is any indication, it probably will be this year too) and the sun is absent for longer than any other day and night on the calendar.

But it's sweet too, because it's that season when people of nearly every faith celebrate one of their holiest days, whether it's Christmas Dec. 25, Hanukkah (this year a little earlier, Dec. 5-12), Eid al Adha (Dec. 20), or Kwanzaa (starts Boxing Day) or others. Also, having hit the longest night of the year, it means that from then on the days now start getting longer again!

All of which is by way of explaining why I'm doing something that I do every year, and which, really, needs no explanation: holding my annual Christmas Solstice Party starting at 9 p.m. on Saturday, December 22, the first official day of winter, at Renaissance Café in Toronto.

The night will basically take place in an open stage format, although a few acts have confirmed they'll be on hand to be part of things, including The McDales (Uncle Herb Dale & Fran McCann & co.) and Damon Hines and of course I'll play a short set as well, hopefully accompanied by my buddy Rob Minderman, who should also be good for several of his own tunes. We'll have Christmas cake and other treats for all performers too!

There's no cover for the show, kids are welcome till 11, and the club, located at 1938 Danforth a block and a half west of Woodbine, offers a great selection of draught and bottle beers, liquors, teas, coffees, snacks, and desserts. So come early, come late, come to listen, come to play, come to celebrate and stay!

Click on the link below, it's a cute Christmas Card from BC Hydro. Takes about 10 seconds and apparently every hit on their site BC Hydro will donate 25 cents to BC Children's Hospital. Pretty neat considering you don't need to do much, just put the quarter in the slot. Joey and Al

 Merry Christmas everyone
BC Hydro has a card at the following site:

http://www.bchydro.com/holiday2007

They will donate 25c to the BC Childrens hospital each time someone activates the site.
It is for a good cause, and not a bad Christmas  Card.
Feel free to pass this one on. Merry Christmas

Sad news about a tireless pioneer of our kind of music. I hope Gary 17 returns to good health and continues to carry on the great work he's done in bringing musicians and club-owners together here in Toronto and the surrounding areas.

Hi Ray,
Tomorrow night, Saturday Dec 22 - It was supposed to be Gary 17's Winter Solstice party. I have just learned that Gary is very ill and currently in Toronto East General. The party will go on - but it will have a different focus. We will still be celebrating the end of the Longest night of the year - but this will also be a "call to arms" to help out a fallen brother - Herb and I will be hosting the show at the Renaissance. We will be collecting whatever you can spare to help Gary cover expenses when he gets out of hospital. So come play, come support live music, come support a guy who has done so much to promote and encourage all us Indie artists. Tomorrow night - at the Ren. 9 pm until whenever. You know the address: 1938 Danforth Ave. (1 1/2 blocks west of the Woodbine Subway Station).

Supporting one of our own,
Fran & Uncle Herb

I know it might be intrusive to inquire just what Gary's illness is. But sooner or later the media will search it out and spill it out to the public.Too my kind of logic, it would better be heard on his Yahoo list of friends first than the media hype.

Pray tell it's not terminal,
Ray

Tony Monaco returns to Orbit Room Thurs. Jan. 10 for one-night show

[Toronto, Ontario, for immediate release January 7, 2008]

While he's in Toronto attending the International Association Of Jazz Educators annual conference taking place this week (culminating in the tribute concert to Oscar Peterson the afternoon of the 12th), Jazz B3 organ whiz and instructor Tony Monaco will be doing a one-night show at Alex Lifeson's hip live music club, The Orbit Room.

Monaco will reunite his trio from last year's Toronto Jazz Festival (with drummer Vito Rezza and guitarist Ted Quinlan) to play Orbit's in-house Hammond from 9-2 on Thursday, January 10. Doors open at 8 and tickets are $15 on a first-come basis, although reservations can be arranged by calling 416-535-0613. The second-floor room, which features live music seven nights a week, is located at 580 College St. between Bathurst and Clinton.

Monaco is no stranger to either the club or the Jazz educators' convention, where in 2004 he taught the first of his many subsequent Jazz organ clinics just a few years after first bursting onto the international scene with his debut 2001 album Burnin Grooves, produced by highly regarded Joey De Francesco. Monaco has gone on to release five albums of performance material as well as a series of instructional dvds and in 2006 conducted a clinic at the legendary Monterey Jazz Festival.

A favourite of Jazz critics and fans alike, for two years straight he was listed in the Downbeat Magazine critics' and readers' polls and in 2007 was also included in the Jazztimes readers' poll. Tutored at age 20 by the legendary Jimmy Smith, he's evolved into a premier player.

His high-energy and often playful style combines adventurousness with a sure-handed mastery of his instrument. Audiences and accompanying players alike find themselves infectiously caught up in a whirlwind of excitement that feels more like a sports high than a mere musical performance!

He's appeared many times at Orbit Room over the past few years as the club has steadily developed a side diet of Jazz to go with the R&B, Rock, Funk, Fusion and Reggae/Ska nights it presents weekly. His most recent appearance at Orbit was for four shows during last summer's Jazz festival, at which in addition to his Primus Stage set at Nathan Phillips Square, he also put on a workshop for fellow artists.

It's not known yet if Monaco will also participate in the tribute to Peterson, but the odds certainly favour it if he is able to remain in the city that long. It's also a good bet that he'll do his own homage to Peterson during the Orbit show and that fellow A-list keyboardists will want to be on hand for this sure-to-be-memorable event.

More information about the Orbit Room is available at www.orbitroom.ca and Monaco's bio, etc., can be found at www.tonymonaco.com.

Orbit Room closed for party tonight, Thurs. Jan. 24 – reopens Fri. Jan. 25 with Arsenals!

If you were planning to check out Chris Caddell and his fabulous Blues band tomorrow night, Jan. 24, for their usual weekly Thursday show at Orbit Room, you want to revise your agenda. The second-floor club at 580 College St. near Clinton will be closed for a private party that night, with Chris and the gang returning in two weeks, Feb. 7. Steely Dan tribute Pretzel Logic performs on Jan. 31, as they do the last Thursday of every month, of course,

(Speaking of private parties, if you ever want to hold such an event at Orbit Room it's always available, either with or without the usual house band du nuit. Just talk to either of the Tims at the bar or call 416-535-0613 or visit www.orbitroom.ca and contact the club through the site –they can also provide catering services too if you want!)

Orbit reopens Friday night with a special show by one of the most exciting acts I've ever seen there, Arsenals, showcasing their high-energy, full-of-fun repertoire of Ska tunes. If you haven't yet checked out this whirlwind of musical thrills you want to do it this night! Talk about an antidote to the Winter Blahs!

See ya in Orbit! -Gary 17

Hi there. The "new" issue has been out since last Thursday now, (Jan.
17) and online since then as well but finding one in the clubs could be
hit-and-miss because most of them usually get picked up during the first
week. However, there are a few spots in various parts of the GTA where
they tend to linger so if you indicate what part of the area you're in I
might be able to steer you to one that has a better probability of still
having some hard copies.
