Subject: [to-nitemagazineforum] General Rule about Gig promotion on this forum

I want to make everyone aware of a new General Rule concerning
listing/promotion of gigs that I'm implementing on this forum.

Bascially I don't mind if people who participate in the forum want to
alert others on the list about their personal gigs. (Participation,
however, is defined as more than just listing your gigs!) But as a
general rule promotion for bands and clubs not affiliated with to-
nite or this forum won't be allowed. Exceptions will be made for some
events such as memorial shows or shows sponsored by non-profit
organizations or other events I might deem to be in the public
interest to post.

But posts that seem to have a commercial flavour and that concern
people who aren't part of the mag or this forum will generally be
deleted.

I hope you can appreciate my reasons for implementing this policy.

Though I know this was directed at Gary:

What we are doing right now, is participating...

> if i go out to someone's gig and i like what i see and put up a pic

Personally, I would see this as a "Review / Testimonial" of a past
Event.... not a "Promotion" of an upcoming event... Which if needed,
there is a rate card awaiting at the office...

A ( "Review / Testimonial" ) in and of it's self is cool ( I'd say
)... Where there might bea problem, is if the same Club name keeps
coming up ( a club that is known to TO-NITE to jerk bands for cash )
and this directs clients and unknowing bands to unscrupulous club
owners.... then that's not
cool.....

TO-NITE ( the hardcopy and e-Zine ) is a publication that stays
afloat through the proceeds of advertising. If we truly like what
Gary17 and TO-NITE do for Live Music... then we're ok with him making
some cash along the way... ( not suggesting that anyone's not ok with
that )

Lets think of this " Public Forum " as the "Letter to the Editor"
portion of a publication... Do they allow for "any" mention ( what so
ever ) of advertising???? Not on your life....

This forum is an added benefit to the Paying Clients of TO-NITE...
and a privilege to the rest of us.... Lets not blow this privilege...

A simple private post to Gary17 seeking permission to post an Event
wouldn't be that much of a hassle either...

Peace

john

John's got it right. I don't mind a review being posted of a show you
actually went to and enjoyed, nor even directed attention to a
particular band or artist you think others would enjoy. I just don't
want endless promotions of upcoming gigs by third parties basically
designed to circumvent the advertising process.

Pre-approval isn't necessary (except for one forum participant whose
posts are moderated). Just keep the guidelines in mind. To repeat:
participants are welcome to post info about their own upcoming gigs,
new records, websites, etc. and to direct attention to other artists
they think have merit. I just don't want a lot of ads for gigs
involving clubs and bands that neither support the magazine nor
participate in the forum discussions.

Gary,

Do you happen to have a listing of the CMW bands playing.  I know the old line-up has changed...a staff member said it would be out this week.  Did you receive it n advance though????  If you have a new list...could you sneak me a peak? hahahaha

I'm still confused. If I wanna turn you guys onto a band I really dig
or am involved in is that not kosher or because I'm a *fairly*
regular poster on this forum it's cool? Someone set me straight.
I don't wanna ruffle anyone's feathers (I did that once on the old
forum and got lambasted for it for weeks [not only from forum
people but members of the band I made mention of]).

All I have is what's on their website : http://www.cmw.net/
You have to click Festival (top left corner) then find the Schedule
button and it comes up. Other than that I don't know -- they haven't
even sent me any press releases though I've applied for accreditation
and as far as I know am accredited, since they say on the site that
unless you hear otherwise assume you're accredited. I would think
Simpson would know the schedule though...

You'll be here for the whole week? I'm planning on attending the Canadian Indie awards on Wed. at Phoenix. I'll probably hit Healey's at some point (probably Sat. for the Alberta showcase featuring Alfie Zappacosta and Corb Lund among others) and if you're still around on the Sunday the Mark Ramone all-Ramones show with his new band at Healey's Sunday should be great! Maybe we'll get to hook up at some point.

Snger-songwriter Kelly Armstrong shares the name of a promiment

Professional Bull Riders tour in the U.S. And he might need some of
the bull riders' legendary toughness to buck the weather on his way
to do his showcase at my weekly open stage at Blues On Bellair on
Mon. Feb. 24.

He'll be the 11-11:40 feature at the 8-2 a.m. open stage which offers
full PA, house guitar and organ and DJ 17 spinning tracks from local
singer-writers between the acts. Not to mention there's special
prices on food and drink on Mondays and lovely Rachel Jermyn will be

The club is located at 25 Bellair St. a block north of the Bellair

Thanks John.:)

Gary, I am in on Thursday to purchase a festival pass and  an event but will be leaving to drive home immediately following.  Can't afford to stay the whole week at the Sheraton...but then again with the gas prices?????  I will be in on Saturday and staying over until Sunday to take in some of the events on both days/evenings.  A friend of mine will be with me and she and I will be stopping at the HC Saturday afternoon to do coffee at the Bar.  If you can...I'd love to see you drop by.  We'll be heading up to the bars from there shortly after dinner.  I would like to take in more, but I find that the cost of a full pass is just too unreasonable for me.  My involvement in the idustry is very minor, so unless I actually get paid to do the promo and bookings...I'll have to settle for the poor man's events.  hahahaha

Daylight / Gary17.... Gary17 / Daylight

Daylight SATURDAY??? / Gary17..... Gary17 / Daylight SATURDAY???

No Matter how I look at this..I'm still coming up with an oxymoron..
The words Gary..... not you...

No folks... you have a better chance of meeting Dracula at high noon on
an outdoor patio...

Gary,

The J.D. in question would most likely be legendary jazz
drummer JACK DeJohnette as opposed to John DeJohnette.
Unless he's got a drumming brother.

Anyroad, just thought I'd give you a heads up

For those of you who've tried to access the Yahoo website for the to-
nite forum and found it temporarily unavailable at times during the
past week:

The forum is back now but since I've still had no reply to my queries
about this to Yahoo (except form letter emails that tell you not to
reply to them but just direct you back to the complaints page again!)
I don't know if it will happen again or not. Sorry for any
inconvenience.
