Two David Ingersons singing sean nos! How wild is
that!
Just a few personal comments on the music...
Singing the songs has been a part of my life, even
though
I am in Montana, since I learned from recordings as a
child.
My grandfather and his siblings were born in Ireland
and
immigrated with their parents as teenagers, but I was
born
too late (1951) to learn directly from them.
Still, I have sung as a child while I played, as an
adult
while I wash the dishes and clean the house, as a
performer,
as a member of an Irish session in my town, as a
mother
to my son. In the last 10 years I have searched for
and found
many of the songs that are obscure here, not the ones
found
in popular recordings. I learn the ones that touch
me, that
I can sing for myself, even though no one here would
be
very interested in them, even at our session. I have
a strong
feeling about these songs that may not be popular.
They feel
like strays that I am rescuing so they can be sung
over here
in the Rocky Mountains, a long way from Ireland.
I regret that I didn't know about Joe Heaney being in
Washington
state when I could have gone to study with him. I
feel thankful
that people did field recordings of singers in the
early 20th century
and have made them available to us so far away from
their origin.
John Moulden, Jean Ritchie and others have been a
great source of the
traditional archive. My thanks to them.
