Hi Brass players,
If you are a chamber musician, you know the unique joys of this kind of
music-making. If you haven't played brass chamber music, I really have
to say, you're missing a wonderful thing.
The annual brass chamber music workshops at Humboldt State University
are a great experience, attracting many experienced chamber players and
also many first-timers. Players come from a wide variety of musical
backgrounds and range in age from teenagers to senior citizens. There
are so many good things to say about the workshop that there isn't room
here to say them all. In a nutshell, the music is good, the people are
good, the location is good, the experience is good. I attended twice as
a participant way back when I was in college, and it added *immensely*
to my musical interests and abilities. I have coached there almost every
year for more than 20 years. There is nothing better than chamber music
to help form excellence, confidence, and balance in a musician.
For the nuts and bolts of schedules and location and all that, please

I would be happy to answer any further questions you might have. I think
Week One is pretty full, but there still might be space there. I think
there is more space available in Week Two, but that is probably filling
up as well. Even if deadlines are past, I'm pretty sure your application
will be considered if there is space available. Trumpet players are
usually especially welcome, since twice as many are needed for most
chamber groups as other instruments. And we have a great track record
with serious college players.
I really only know two kinds of brass players--Those who love the brass
camps at Humboldt State, and those who would regret not having attended
years ago, if only they knew how wonderful the workshops are...
I'm happy to respond on list or off.
Best,
Ray Burkhart
