Brian - if you were able to change presets with the 8-pin cable, then you have MIDI to the amp, and the unit will work with a 5-pin and adapter (almost surely). But that's standalone mode. If you have a TransFex, you should press on for intelligent mode - it's well worth it.
If you can get your hands on another cable, that should tell whether it's a bad cable, or if you have a bad connection either in the footswitch or the amp.
From: achoogodblessmeJohn,
I tried the reinitializing the other day and it did not help. I am
going to track down a 5 pin midi cable somewhere and use the ac
adapter for the PFC and see what happens. The 5 pin cables are
cheaper and more readily available to substitute. This way I can
determine if my brand new 8 pin cable from Peavey is defective.
I have a few stores in my area who are Peavey authorized, perhaps
they can shed some light also.
I am still open to your suggestions or anyone else who wants to join
in to resolve my problem.
Thanks,

initializing the amp. It probably won't help, but it might be a good
idea if you want to start "factory fresh." If you have presets in
there already, you'd want to save them to a card or MIDI first. A re-
init is done by holding DOWN and RIGHT while powering up.

1 is probably the default. It probably doesn't matter, though. It
sounds like a cable or jack issue. The 8-pin cable setup we use
provides 3 things: MIDI data to the amp, MIDI data to the
footswitch, and power to the footswitch. If you are in stand-alone
mode and able to change presets (and not using a wall wart with the
PFC), then you have 2 out of 3, and the problem is that data from the
amp to the PFC isn't happening. Look at the cable and make sure there
are 8 pins and not 7. If it's 8, try and find someone with the same
cable to try out and see if that's the problem. Sometimes one of the
DIN jacks on the amp or PFC side can get a faulty solder joint. Just
have to narrow it down.

PFC and no power, so you'd have to use a wall-wart (16 VAC).
