Roy Orbison - The 'Big O' in Britain

Next on:

Today, 20:00 on BBC Four

Synopsis

To mark the 20th anniversary of his death, this documentary celebrates the extraordinary talent of Roy Orbison and his relationship with his most loyal fans, British musicians and the British public.

Through a combination of interview and archive, it charts Orbison's career in Britain, from the sell-out tour with the Beatles that rocketed him to superstardom to the collaboration with lifelong friend George Harrison on the Travelling Wilburys project in the 1980's.

My view's below.

I liked The Ventures, always played nice music,  a guitar based band, that must have influenced Hank Marvin, or did he influence them?

I bought their version of Starsky and Hutch theme, written by Tom Scott, "Gotcha" used during series two, in the UK. The B-side had "Charlie's Angels" theme. I had an old 45 "Perfidia", it had the "No Trespassing", on the B-side.

They also had many singles, "Walk Don't Run" (John Barry), Hawaii Five O (Morton Stevens).

Well worth reading the full article, just click on the above link.

Another great musician.

Hugh Hopper: Innovative bassist with Soft Machine and stalwart of the
Canterbury scene

Friday, 12 June 2009

Hopper with Soft Machine outside the Royal Albert Hall before a gig with
the London Symphony Orchestra in 1970: (L-R) Mike Ratledge, Hopper,
Robert Wyatt and Elton Dean

     * Photos enlarge

The bass guitarist and composer Hugh Hopper was a pivotal member of Soft
Machine, the Canterbury group which went through many incarnations and
shifts in musical identity and proved more successful in continental
Europe than the UK in the late Sixties and early Seventies. A friend and
schoolmate of the founder-member, drummer and vocalist Robert Wyatt,
Hopper contributed to the group's psychedelic debut in 1968 and was
their road manager before replacing bassist Kevin Ayers on the jazzier
Volume Two album the following year. Hopper was a mainstay of the Softs
until May 1973, his trademark fuzz Fender Precision bass riffs and
experiments with tape loops as important to the group's ever-evolving
sound as Mike Ratledge's Lowrey electric organ through five albums,
including the best-selling Third (1970) and Fourth (1971).

It is old news already but 'we' have all had a lot on our plate.

Joe Walsh,Regina Specktor and TW Mark2 will probably be on the
cards, more Tom Petty and all those remasters BLU-SPEC ANWR
CDJAPAN.COM.He is regrouping.

All those using Itunes and Microsoft maybe interested in Digital 7 very
cheap and it works great with Linux Mint 6.

Save those pennies/euro/dollars and your computers now.

Kelly Groucutt gets a mention in Record Collector.

If you go to EMI on the web you can listen to complete ELO albums for
free in stereo.

Looking forward to hearing Jeff again after 19 years.

He has a lot on his plate but I'm confident he'll come through
particulary since the last few years has given him much to think
about.

A friend and I are working on putting together a video message for him
on Youtube. I'm editing the audio at this time to fit the pictures. I
should have it up before the weekend is over.

In the meantime here's hoping his production on Regina Spektor's album
FAR shines through the summer.

That's fine but SONY/BGM will ALWAYS spin doctor Jeff as a serious
artist.

For a better representation of Jeff's fun side. The Wilburys'
Documentary showed us what he is capable of as opposed to just being
the leader.

Right in that regard. Perhaps one or both of his daughters could
create an Appreciation board where they could pass on info to their
father and the doors could be opened up a bit.

If Jeff were to create an exclusive web album from the net only he
could see how it work as opposed the conventional model.

iplayer in the UK allows you to download and watch for a limited period.

Jeff Lynne,is a rather loud,comedian type,who is in control,maybe not on
the Whistle Test clip on Youtube. The image we are given of the artist is
a reclusive,serious and angelic.When infact,he could probably set the
benchmark for some of today wild rockers.

It is sad because instead of having a serious fan and artist
relationship, like they do with Genesis,Marrilion, etc we have to speak to
Jeff through a medium. Being able to say "Hey Jeff" you working on a new
album? Is far more exciting then being told "Jeff is always busy" The
ELO fabs are treated like children, just like Jeff is,and god forbid we
should ever be able to communicate.

Most of us were ELO fans long before email was invented, yet we almost
knew more then than we do now.

Then is 1986,the door slams shut and ELO became a secret society, the
fans and the artist probably never asked for that but that is what
happened.

So YOUTUBE has opened a vault up,that kills off the sterile image and
actually allows the real Jeff Lynne to breath and be seen and heard as
he really is.

We have the remasters etc which is great but if we want more Jeff
Lynne,we have to go direct.

Maybe if Mr Jeff, ran a list rather than, some company, who own the
copyright.

I mean no offence to anyone, everyone does a great job, more could be
done.None of us are getting younger lol but as I said if Marrillion and
Genesis can do it,why not? A free independent, copyright respecting
group, could do more. We could get downloads at the new AAC PLUS like on
itunes or higher,if it is the only way.

But youtube has shown us the way and we should build on that, imagine
Jeff, with his own channel, doing his own thing? But this 'you must never
go beyond the curtain,is a bit daft and I believe it makes Jeff and us
fans,seem like fools.

Happy New Year

Simon,Highlands (Got my flame suit on) ;)

The BBC is working on an International version of I-Player from what I
read on their site a few minutes ago. That remains to be seen with all
the sue happy companies mucking things about but I digress.

So do I obviously.

Which really isn't doing Jeff much good in the long run no matter what
The Spin Doctors tell us.

For better or worse sometimes it's better to have The Bigger Than Life
image than The Humanzized one. Living up to it is another matter
altogether.

The latter unfortunately winds up making it worse than it actually is.

True. But outside of the fandom. No one really cares enough to give
them an even break and Sony for all the clever strageties they've done
is not making it any better.

BBC4 is good,try i-player.

I been watching some of the material, you have posted advertising your
website. Very good. I do wonder why a lot of the very funny Jeff
Lynne, material on Youtube, along with the material he did with Roy Wood
has not surfaced commercially, instead of the countless SONY BMG,logic of
repackaging of the same compilations every 6 months, well I know the
answer.

Jeff Lynne, comes across very different on Youtube,to the 'fragile'image
we are presented with, not his fault but obviously somebody elses in the
'fanclub'industry.

Old Grey Whistle Test,Jeff, seemed to be having two conversations, one on
camera and another with somebody behind the camera.

The ELO Drunk,is another example of Jeff, being very sharp and funny on
Youtube.

Maybe it is time to rewrite the ELO history into the reality it is
rather than the 'cleansed for the fans' image.

I always say,it is the music that matters and sure we can talk about how
we saw Jeff,in bestbuy and discuss but the music and the remasters of
Idle Race through Move and ELO is where its at.

Simon,wind swept north Scotland

Have a great Christas etc and New Year.

Keep playing ELO and buy the Blu-spec OOTB and Discovery, widely known
about via CDJAPAN for a long time.

Is there any chance that this will be repeated?

Hello,

There was a TV show about Roy Orbison (and the Tracveing Wilburys) on BBC Four last week. It was available on the web too but only for the UK country. Is there someone who recorded it?
