Sorry I haven't actually written since last year. I'll write about the journey next week - this letter is mostly event driven.

 

On New Year's Day, Marlo and I became involved in a charitable effort which took up the next nine days on a double full-time basis, and we are scurrying to catch up on our own stuff! Life is good!

 

The best news is that the upcoming year is coming together very well, and there will be more live gigs than there were during last year's production blitz.

 

For now, we begin our annual cycle of special events. We schedule our two annual events at home in Houston, Texas, USA during the late winter, allowing us to avoid the coldest part of the northern winters.

 

This year, because of the tsunami, there will be these two and a couple more. More on these below...

 

TONIGHT'S HIPPIES.TV

Tonight's 'Hippies.TV' program is titled NASHVILLE STARSTRUCK. The program is about the night that Houston auditions were held for 'NASHVILLE STAR 3', at The Mucky Duck. WEestern Beat's Billy Block asked Roger and I to serve with him as the house band for the after-auditions' jam to be held after the individual contestants were filmed acoustically. We were set to be there anyway, to cheer on Opie Hendrix, and hear/meet some artists we hadn't met before, so we brought guitars and cameras. This episode features Sly Blakeman. Big John Mills, Randy Soffar, Allie Danielle, Tracy Pilgreen, Kina Lankford and more...

 

Hippies.TV' airs at 10pm on Fridays, on Warner Cable Channel 17, Kingwood Cable Channel 98 and TV-MAX Channel 17. Programs are cycled on the web at www.hippies.tv

HOUSTON TSUNAMI RELIEF KICK-OFF EVENT

At our New Year's Day party at the house, my son expressed his desire to do something for the South Asian tsunami victims, and it wasn't long before www.houstontsunamirelief.org was born. It's become his (and his girlfriend's) full-time job for now.

 

Besides donating that first week-and-a-half of our (MArlo & my) time and experience, we're going to perform this weekend, and are looking for ways to let our upcoming events (SOUTH BY DUE EAST 2005 & Bluesguy's Birthday Jam #5) serve that cause in some way, too.

 

The New Jack Hippies will play it's kick-off event this Sunday (1.23) at NUMBERS on lower Westheimer, featuring  live music by Scarface, Gloria Edwards, Neutral Sisters, Dubtex, and a very cool roster of DJs, including BMC, Wes Wallace, Steve Swift, Levon Louis and Chris Anderson. Come on down. We should be onstage around 8pm, but doors open four hours earlier.

Birthday Jam #5 is shaping up well, with several artists lined up to sit-in with The New Jack Hippies in my back yard, and a guest appearance by Chango Jackson! Also appearing with the band, will be Z-ROCKS, E.P. VALLEJO, JIMMY DEEN, TRACY CONOVER and more.

SOUTH BY DUE EAST is a guerrilla marketing project, begun by Marlo Blue & Sirius Hippies Productions, and held in Houston and Austin at SXSW time, to promote independant Texas music and the music and art scene in Houston, Texas, USA, as well as promoting individual projects of it's participants. At each year's fest, a film is made to document, show, and promote all of the performers and the art they make.

This year, SOUTH BY DUE EAST will be held at Dan Electro's Guitar Bar on March 19-20.
