*LIVE HIPPIES @ Last Concert Cafe with FAHL & FOLK
*WEEKEND MUSIC
*OH, WHAT A NIGHT!
*HIPPIES.TV TONIGHT

Before I tell you about the Houston Tsunami Relief show last Sunday, allow me to tell you where to see Guy Schwartz & The New Jack Hippies play this weekend.

We play in town once on Sunday, and appear on TV tonight.

Tonight's episode of 'Hippies.TV' (at 10:00pm on Warner Cable channel 17, Kingwood Cable channel 98, and TV-Max 17) features a radio concert that Guy Schwartz & The New Jack Hippies performed in Holland last November. If you don't have cable, many of these shows are rotated on www.hippies.tv

On Sunday night, we'll join David Fahl & Folk at their regular Sunday evening gig at The Last Concert Cafe, We'll play acoustically around 6pm, followed by David & Mikey and almost every other musician who shows up!

Check out the line-up for this year's Bluesguy's Birthday Jam #5 (Bluesguy's Rock-n-Roll House Party!) at www.bluesguy.com

Houston Tsunami Relief
What a night!
----------
I love all day events with a bunch of bands, DJs and musicians. What a great time to hear your friends play, and enjoy the feeling of community which DOES exist in Houston (although often hard to find).

Last Sunday's Houston Tsunami Relief benefit at NUMBERS was such an event, and I enjoyed every minute I was there. Houstontsunamirelief.org is a new organization (conceived by MY SON (proud Dad moment) Levon Louis & Adrienne Currie at our house on New Year's Day).  By the following night, Levon & Adrienne had TV stations, NUMBERS and a congresswoman involved. By the time the phone calls had all been returned, we had a live music line-up which featured Scarface, Neutral Sisters, Dubtex, Gloria Edwards, Wayside Drive, QUE, and Guy Schwartz & The New Jack Hippies.

We arrived at 5pm, after the festivities had begun. The band onstage was Wayside Drive. This was my first time hearing them, and they rocked like a buzz-type pop band should rock. Don't know who they were followed by, as Marlo, Roger, Corey Stoot and I headed to Ming's for dinner. Corey is a big part of Scarface's new big band, and had just flown in for the show. Corey was fried from a four-day visit to the N.A.M.M. show in Los Angeles. Roger and Corey spoke about remixing the jazz CD that Corey had recorded with Roger last year at Iris Studios, and we traded notes on old musical friends and new gear.

When we arrived back at the venue, QUE was onstage, with a funked up hiphop groove and crowd-pleasing performance style. During the band's change-over, Matthew Dunne took over the turntables. Matthew is part of the Chemistry Records/Trancision Crew, along with Jreyna and Czar, who also spun while we were there. These guys specialize in hard trance and progressive house music, and it was a great warm-up for Guy Schwartz & The New Jack Hippies, performing a quick set featuring guest vocalist (and one of my favorite hippies) Gloria Edwards on two of Guy's songs. The rhythm section of Leesa Squyres & Roger Tausz rocked the band hard, but the crowd was more interested in two well-endowed strippers doing a fertility spank-me dance by the main bar.

BMC was next, spinning a quick but inspired reggae flavored set from the stage.  For you rockers and bluesers who don't keep up with such things, BMC is a drumNbass pioneer, publisher of PRIDE (one of the original DnB magazines), and is a cofounder of the Purrin' Lion Soundflex Crew, one of the largest and oldest dj collectives.

Now came Scarface & The Formaldehyde Funk Men, a twelve piece horn band which rocked the house with a smooth jazz/trance/R&B/hiphop sound of their own. Studio wizard Mike Dean was one of two keyboardists, and it sounded great. Scarface, every bit as confident and in control onstage as ever, took the band thru highs and lows and worked the crowd like the pro he is.

In a day when many rappers have decided to add to their sound by trying to sing (and often failing), Scarface has decided to expand his sound by becoming more musical. He took his turn on drums, bass and guitar, then invited me onstage to play guitar, too.

It was a great show, and the band knew it. They blew through old hits and new songs alike, and it was all top-notch stuff. Mr. Scarface is back!

Next came DJ Steve Swift, bringing the crowd to it's feet and towards the stage, as The Neutral Sisters checked the sound lines with Tie-Dyed Productions' Alan Cunningham, who had donated the system and the work to make the sound great! DJ Steve Swift is a former professional drummer, and is clearly regarded as Houston's #1 DnB MC, and widely regarded as one of the best anywhere. He's a part of the Blunted Crew (reggae DJ collective) with BMC & DJ Cef, who also performed.

The Neutral Sisters were OK, fronting a workmanlike reggae band ("Can you tell we've had only one rehearsal?"), and sporting a great pop-reggae sound which works better with your eyes closed. Although pleasant to look at, the Sisters move like two teenagers rehearsing moves in front of the bedroom mirror, never quite lapsing into anything resembling believable soul.

They were lucky that Levon Louis put them before Dubtex - they would have had trouble following Dubtex. The comparison was too obvious. Same rhythms, but Dubtex had soul, rhythm, drive, energy, and a command of the stage that the Sisters lacked. Dubtex performed after a brief set by DJ Cef, the latest hot-hand to step on the DJ scene in Houston, and from the onset, Dubtex' Jeremy Masters aka Dredi Knight had complete control of the stage and audience. Live P.A. tracks from drummer/producer Lion 808 were soon joined by the live musicians for a live drumNbass/dancehall/hiphop sound that made everyone in the joint start to move their collective and individual butts! Mr. Rico came forward and added his smooth style to the mix. It was great! I admit that they might be my favorite local band, but that doesn't change the fact that these guys rock!

DJ Czar, (also from the Chemistry Records Crew) took everybody home. Money was raised, and a good time was had by all. Upcoming Houston Tsunami Relief Dot Org events include Bluesguy's Birthday Jam #5 on February 20th, and February 11th's  'D1G1T4L L0V3' (Digital Love) at Club 1415, including electronic performances by Vertigo Blue, LunateX, Asmodeus X, Brio Kids, DJ Genesis, and more...
