*WEEKEND MUSIC
For the sake of this letter, I will assume that we all know that Hippies.TV is not just a website, but it is the name of our weekly TV show (which airs on Friday nights at 10pm on Waner, Kingwood, and TV-Max cable systems), and we also know about my birthday party (Bluesguy's R&R House Party) and about the big SOUTH BY DUE EAST 2005 gathering in March. If you don't already know too much about these things, check the website.
This week, my daughter Chelsea needs a ride! Or, at least, her stuff does. Chelsea is moving back from Chicago at the end of the month. She did good (two Bs, one A and one C) at that special audio school, and wants to be in Texas in time for SXSW. If you know anyone driving to Houston from Chicago, who has a van or could pull a trailer, please respond to me.
Big thanks to The Music News and publisher Kevin Wildman for putting me on the cover of their February magazine, and publishing a great article by Marlo Blue! Kevin has been a great friend and supporter for decades, and has been kind enough to give me a cover story every 23 years, whether I deserve it or not! <g>
Not a lot of time to report on all the cool stuff we're working on this week. I've been busy assembling video for Hippies.TV, mastering CDs for release before the two big events, and working out songs and schedules with artists from both. Just got back from a Tuesday night out. Started by dropping off TV programs at Houston Media-Source, and then dropped by the Houston Music Industry round table at The Meridian. Lots of people at this meeting. I hung with old friends like brothers Dan & Oscar Oviedo from the band IRENE, buddies Brian and Jeff from Sound Arts Studios, Mike Naus (Vertigo Blue), and Kevin Wildman. I also got to put a face to email buds like Sara Cress from The Chronicle Interactive, and Elvo Wickstein from the band HUDDA HUBBA. Mary Jane Hancocks patent leather mod boots were da bomb!
After then Meridian, I went on to The Last Concert Cafe to drop off 500 blank CDs for Dubtex' Lion808 (he and Nicki have had their baby by the time you read this - congrats... let's have a shower at the cafe) and listen to The Scott Daniels Band! Mmm, Mmm, good! Ended the night jamming at Dan Electro's at EP VAllejo's new almost-every-Tuesday jam.
I say 'almost-every-Tuesday, because...
One Tuesday per month, they've got Blowtorch Repair, but the rock jam is the other Tuesdays. Kinda confusing, but it's a common thing that bar-owners do that us bands think is a mistake.
By some opinions - The only way to build a loyal following for a special night or band is consistancy, every week, so I hope that the young rockers being cultivated at EPV's rock jam, when showing up to jam loosely on ruff versions of old rock standards, are not turned off when they show up one Tuesday night and find great classic-rockers playing a night of well-rehearsed oldies instead. Reminds me - Did I ever mention the narrow tolerance that most American music fans AND musician have for styles of music other than their own....
I'm home now, and beginning this letter, which won't be sent out 'til Thursday or Friday, but I need to get it written while I can. The next six week will be a very cool panic!
In my world, there are also several friends and family members doing medical procedures this next week. We'll be busy taking care of some of them, but if given the opportunity, we'll try to get out on Friday to see Martin & Shelby at Bibas around 8:30 and then over to Dan Electro's where carolyn Wonderland and Tracy Conover will play together in a benefit for The Houston Area women's Center. I WILL make it by Club 1415 to speak briefly at the electronica show there (which benefits houstontsunamirelief.org and the charities it supports), and video tape as much of Vertigo Blue, LunateX and The Brio Kids as I can. OsmodeusX also performs, but I won't be there then...
Sunday afternoon, Texas House Concerts presents Dancing Bare. Cool!
On Sunday night (actually Monday morning), Roger and I will perform live on the radio and web at KPFT-FM90.1 (www.kpft.org), on 'Pat & Rosie's Nightsounds' program at 5:00am CST.
Monday night, I'll join a cast of thousands (including Big Al Bettis, Rich Layton, Tommy Dardar, Tommie lee Bradley and more...) at Fitzgerald's to celebrate valentine's Day and Rock Romano's 60th birthday.
