REPORT FROM THE FIELD
We Got To Play With Archie Bell
----------
I woke up on Saturday to find Marlo re-arranging on of the rooms and kicking up a lot of dust - too much dust for my allergies! Needing to lock myself in the studio or get away from the house altogether, I called Roger to see what's up. He was about to leave for the Rhythm Room, to play bass with Tracy Conover on Joe's Roadhouse Live.
I decided that I'd go there and videotape Roger and Tracy. I already have great footage of Tracy at our events, but nothing with her own band. Arriving just in time to set up cameras, I hurriedly said my hellos, set up tripods, and loaded up the videotape.
Marlo had warned that we seldom get great footage at The Rhythm room, because the lighting is slightly recessed from the front of the stage (due to large overhanging beams over the front lip), leaving performers who work up front in the dark.
That's the way it turned out, too. When Tracy was at the mic, she was in the dark, and the video is dull at best. But when she stepped back for guitar solos, she entered the light and the video came alive. Fortunately, Tracy has soloed over some of Roger's "bass ditties" (that's what he calls them), for so long, that they've become set instrumental pieces. During these tunes, Tracy and Roger were lit up beautifully, so we'll have some cool stuff.
When Archie Bell arrived, he had a CD to play over the system, so he could do his songs Karaoke-style. He said that his band had decided not to show up, but we suspected that they never intended to come in the first place.
It was going to be almost all cover songs, so I packed up the cameras.
Within 5 minutes, Roger, Tracy, and drummer Charlie Fountaine were taking their gear back out of their vehicles, and getting ready to be Archie's throw-down back-up band. Archie asked if I would play, but I had taken my guitar out of the trunk before leaving home (to make room for camera gear).
I called Marlo and expressed my frustration that I had left my guitar at home. She told me to tell Tracy and Roger how good it sounded on the radio. It was going to be almost all cover songs, so I packed up the cameras, and she had already turned off the radio.
There were no guitar players present, so a loaner wasn't going to happen. Sitting in back with Roger and Archie (and the list), I helped with the musical progressions Roger and Tracy didn't know. Archie's very cool list was a top 40 of blues and soul standards. Heck - I'd played these songs plenty of times over the decades.
As I was putting up the last piece of camera gear, Roger came up and told me that Wes (tracy's roadie, pal, merch seller, and all 'round cool guy) had a custom shop Stratocaster that nobody else had ever played. They had all decided that it would be good to have me (or my song knowledge) up there with them, and had convinced Wes that he should loan me his strat!
You could see it in his eyes. Nobody wants another player to be the one who puts the first nick in their new guitar. I assured Wes that I'd treat this beauty as if it were my girlfriend. He wasn't sure what I meant, but was willing to give me (and the guitar) the benefit of the doubt.
I took out one camera and called Marlo. "You can turn the radio back on!"
Smokin' Joe introduced us and we were off to the races. Mustang Sally, High Heel Sneakers and the rest.
It rocked. I was willing to play rhythm and let Tracy blast, but Archie called me for the first solo. The adrienaline of the commotion between sets had me so jittery that I rushed through my 12-13 guitar licks and have no idea what it sounded like, but within ten minutes, I was back to grooving with the warmed-up guys, and playing tastefully enough.
Archie Bell is a master entertainer, and the audience loved every minute of it!
