*WEEKEND MUSIC CALENDAR

Just a quick note to bring news of live music and recorded TV programs featuring live music!

The New Jack Hippies don't play this week, but I'll perform with Opie Hendrix on Saturday, and, Roger and I will both participate at Michael Heyman's CD release party at Fitzgerald's this Sunday night. It's a big show, featuring one set with Michael doing the album, and a set with a giant band featuring Tommie Lee Bradley, Tommy Dardar, and over a dozen other star-studded participants...

I don't have any live music events to report from this week, but the planning and production work we've done will result in many upcoming opportunities to participate in some very cool stuff - some of it, like Michael's CD release, coming this weekend!

----------
HIPPIES.TV TONIGHT - Warner Cable 17
SOUTH BY DUE EAST
----------
This week's episode features performances from SOUTH BY DUE EAST 2005 last March, and stars Friends Of The Enemy, Dead PA, Vertigo Blue, Muzak, and Q.U.E.

Hippies.TV is undergoing an editing process, bringing 30 minute access TV programs down to 23 minutes (to allow for smaller downloadable files in the web, and allow cable/broadcast stations to carry our program and insert commercials). I should begin posting the Hippies.TV series season one episodes, in a compressed web-movie form, on the web within the next 30 days.

WONDERJAM IN AMSTERDAM 2005
----------
Darren Fisher came by yesterday to invite me to play at WONDERJAM IN AMSTERDAM 2005 this November.

We did really well with the audiences there last year, but we're going to need help getting the band on the show. One way you can help is... When you sign up for the WONDERJAM Vacation package (November 14-20), be sure to let them know that you are signing up as a friend of The New Jack Hippies.

For every five travelers that mention The New Jack Hippies, Wonderjam will pay for one of my bandmates to come on the trip. It's a great party in a great city, and confirmed artists include Carolyn Wonderland, Patrice Pike, Matt Hubbard, The Austin Volunteer Orchestra, Wayne Sutton and me, with more artists to be added.

So far, I'm on the bill, either as a solo singer/songwriter, or as a bandleader with my band. Now it's up to our friends to help get Leesa, Roger and possibly even more New Jack Hippies to The Netherlands, too. Now we try to find a way to get the band across the pond, too. Once we know we're going to be there as a band, we can book a tour as a band. Until I have a clear idea whether we're offering a solo or the band, it's difficult to try to book myself elsewhere in Europe. Please help me get the band there, too!

Thanks for all of your help and support in the past!!!

If you intend to go on the trip, or wish to help this endeavor in any way, please contact me, so I can plan our trip the best way possible.

Cash donations will help, too. WONDERJAM WILL let us buy the trip for Roger and Leesa (and Patrick, and Chaz, and Carlos) at a discounted rate, too.

This should be fun!

BENEFIT FOR RANDAL CALCOTE
SHFL - Saturday Night
----------
On Saturday, there's another big show with a community-minded purpose. We're going to help pay Randal Calcote's medical bills. Randal & I first collaborated in 1980, for a radio play that he had written and was producing. In 1985, he joined my band Z-Rocks on the tour bus as a journalist and photographer, chronicling our tour with Duran Duran for the old Public News.

Most songwriters, musicians and music journalists are full-time drinkers. Music is a tough way to survive the real world, and drinking seems to temporarily help a lot of them get through the month. The fact that I'm not a drinker has had a good impact on my work and career, but there has been a downside, too! Articles by some writers have never been written, and songs have not been co-written with me because I'm not one to sit around for hours, just drinking and talking until the whiskey bottle runs dry. I have my vices and some other well-known ways that I alleviate my stress, too, but alcohol isn't one of them.

Due to this drinking thing, Randal and I have never hit it off well. Randal's drinking is so well-known, that every email I've received (and even John Nova Lomax' Houston Press article) about Saturday's benefit, has gone out of the way to say that he wasn't drunk when he injured himself - every one! I have little patience or tolerance for loud, sarcastic, abusive, negative drunks, and Randal turns that way too often for me.

I do respect his art, his willingness to express an unpopular view, and the uncompromising way he has lived his life - so I will be at Super Happy Fun Land this Saturday night for what looks to be a varied and musical benefit to help pay Randal's bills. It's a great line-up, coordinated by Kingfish Keith Collins,  which includes Opie Hendrix & The Texas Tallboys, Organ Failure, Muzak, Fahl and Folk, Secret Beat Society, Friendship Bracelet, Kairos, Jimmy Deen and Glenna Bell.
