HOUSTON PRESS MUSIC AWARDS
Mercury Room
7pm Sunday

That's when we play, but there are over 70 other artists performing from 4-10 at a dozen venues. This is always a blast!

----------
48 HOUR FILM FESTIVAL
Whew!
----------
Tonight at 7pm, Marlo and I will pick a prop, a character, a line of dialogue and a genre (out of a hat) and then begin making a film with a 48 hour deadline. The whole film must be written, shot, edited and the sound mastered by 7pm Sunday evening (when we're onstage at The Mercury Room).
It's an international competition, with all contestants and their teams being volunteers. In otherwords, you can't hire pros for your team, unless they do it for free. We've got a great team lined up, including Roger, Levon and a bunch of our creative friends. We're meeting up at The Last Concert Cafe at 5:45pm and running into production from there.
This should be a gas!

Suddenly, I’m on the road again! An email came thru from Mark Zeus, asking, “Can anybody help these guys?” It seems that THE JOHN WILDE GROUP from London was stuck in the middle of their US tour without a bass player. Many musicians know that I have a great database full of musicians, and that I’ve got a talent for last-minute filling in on bass or with a whole improvised band without a lot of time and prep work (rehearsal), so I often get these calls and emails to help refer (or become) the right musicians or bands.

I went onto the web and found some mp3s. Hmmm... these songs are good! This time I decided that I’d like to do the gig myself. I’m almost through with my Hippies.TV obligations for now, our Canadien tour fell through for August, and I know that John Wilde has played guitar for some of my heroes (Steve Winwood, Joe Strummer, etc…). So, I rang him up and committed to the next couple of weeks (as long as I could be here this weekend for the 48 contest and HPMA), and let him know I could be available for August and September if it all feels right.
SO -
I'm on the road with a British pop band playing bass!
The stuff I read on the web said that THE JOHN WILDE GROUP got onstage as they were and just played. So, on the drive down I-10 east, I stopped only for gas and at one western-wear store, where I decided to pick up a simple black western shirt, in case John Wilde was the type of insecure bandleader who would not appreciate a sideman showing up in flashier clothes than he.
Whenever approaching a tour as an unknown sideman, I’m reminded of the time that Billy Block, Gurf Morlix, Zeeder Hogg and I played with B.W. Stephenson at Baylor College in Waco, Texas, long, long ago. The college paper reviewed the show the next day and called Buck boring, but cited Billy and I as very entertaining musicians to watch. I never played with Buck again! <g> Rule #17, don’t outshow the frontman, unless he/she works for you!
Pulling into Baton Rouge and finding the venue was easy. SoGo Live is a large room with a large stage and great sound and lighting. The oyster po-boy from next door wasn’t quite as nice. If one can’t get good oysters in Louisiana, where could one get good oysters?
Back In Houston

That's all I got to write from the road, but I promise to get ya'll caught up with my adventure next week.
