REPORT FROM THE FIELD:
My Unexpected Month Of July - Pt.1
----------
Suddenly, I’m on the road again! An email came thru from Mark Zeus
(who has begun coordinating Sunday nights at Dean's Credit
Clothing), asking, “Can anybody help these guys?”

THE JOHN WILDE GROUP from London was stuck in the middle of their
US tour without a bass player. Musicians know that I have a great
database full of available musicians, and that I'm good at filling
in on bass (or with a whole improvised band) at the last minute,
so I get these calls and emails. I went onto the web and found
some mp3s. Hmmm, these songs are good! I decided that I’d like to
do the gig myself. I’m almost through with my Hippies.TV
obligations for now, our Canadian tour fell through for August,
and I know that John Wilde has played guitar for some of my heroes
(Steve Winwood, Joe Strummer, Paul Young, etc…). So, I rang him up
and now I'm on the road with a British pop band playing bass!

The stuff on the web said that these guys got onstage as they were
and just played. So, on I-10 east, I stopped only for gas and at
one western-wear store, to pick up a simple black western shirt,
in case John Wilde was the type of insecure bandleader who would
not appreciate a sideman showing up in flashier clothes than he.

When about to be a new sideman, I’m reminded of the time that
Billy Block, Gurf Morlix, Zeeder Hogg and I played with B.W.
Stephenson at Baylor College in Waco, Texas, long, long ago. I had
done a couple dozen gigs with Buck. The college paper reviewed the
show the next day and practically called Buck boring, but cited
Billy and I as very entertaining musicians to watch. Buck never
called me again! <g> Rule #17, don’t outshow the frontman, unless
he/she works for you!

Sound check in Baton Rouge went well. I found a place to park, put
valuables in the trunk, changed into one of my fancier western
shirts and tried the nearest door. I had entered the back door
of 'SoGo Live', in the backstage area, right next to the office,
with no view of the stage and showroom. There were two musician-
looking guys on the other end of the room, so I approached them.

"Are you Guy?", asked the dark haired one.

"Yes, I'm Guy Schwartz.", I said with my best nice-to-meet-you
smile.

"Great shirt!"

They had already set up the gear, so we proceeded right into sound
check (the only rehearsal we would ever have). By the time we had
rocked on 4 songs, the blister on my right middle finger was large
enough to require using a pick for the next 3 days. But it did
rock. It rocked a bit differently that the mp3s I had listened to,
but Mark Tompson was a great rock drummer, and John Wilde's voice,
guitar and songs were everything I had heard on those mp3s.

We ordered sandwiches from the place next door, and moved into
John's RV to listen to some tunes I hadn't heard yet, trade
some 'get-to-know-you small talk, and have a smoke. Turns out that
their sour-drunk bass player was a substitute himself. The real
bass player was turned back at the airport with visa problems.
Don't know what happened to the drummer, but this was only Mark's
second gig with The John Wilde Group.

The last time I had played in Baton Rouge, my band Z-Rocks was
opening for DURAN DURAN in the LSU basketball arena, with an
amazingly tasty catered cajun seafood feast! Louisiana had always
been a great place for seafood. Tonight, the oyster poboy
sandwich sucked.

The Engliushmen were both obviously relieved to find that I could
cut the gig on bass. John said that Mark had been quite concerned
about playing with a stranger, but that he had assured him that
musicians were better in America, and no American musician was
going to drive across the country unless he knew he could cut it.
I didn't know about "across the country", I had only driven to
Louisiana...

When writing last month at this time, I expected little musical
action in July, but that turned out a bit short-sighted! I joined
Opie Hendrix & The Texas Tallboys on stage at Fun Land during the
all-day event to help pay Randal Calcote's hospital bills on that
first weekend before the road, and the fun continued all weekend
long.

I sat in with E.P. Vallejo and his hard-rockin' trio at the Texas
House Concert series at The Space Place, and then took part at
Michael Heyman's CD release concert at Fitzgerald's. This was one
large event, as Michael took a large band (which included Roger
Tausz, Brian Turner and Rock Romano, amongst others) thru his new
songs, old cover songs and songs with guest artists like Sam
Massey and Herschell Berry.

An even larger band, embellished with Teri Greene, Big Al Bettis
(who had opened the show) and yours truly, played out a 'concert
for Bangladesh' segment including 'Bell Bottom Blues and 'While My
Guitar Gently Weeps'. It was strange sharing a microphone with Big
Al Bettis, who towers over me (and everyone else) in height. I
watched Al go to the mic and adjust it, then turn to look at me,
then turn back to adjust the mic a bit lower. That done, he then
stepped back, looked at me again and smiled, and then promptly
walked back to the mic and adjusted the stand even lower.

After that, the night went on into short 'blues jam' type sets. I
enjoyed my turn, playing bass with Andy 'Too Hard' Williams and
Angelo Giovanni. Cool! I had been thinking about going to the jams
with only a bass, to get my bass playing chops and calluses up
again.

A couple days later, I was back on the road as a bass player.

That gig in Baton Rouge was cool enough. The room was large, the
stage and sound system were great, with killer computerized
recording and lighting set-ups. JB, who was running the place, was
a kind fellow and former Houstonian (La Portian?) who had stayed
in Baton Rouge after a successful football career at LSU. He
offered his broadband connection for those of us who needed to
check email. I left his browser on www.hippies.tv, playing The
Ballad Of Fearless Diablo' on a loop. He dug it! The opening band
was 'Torn & Frayed'. I dug what they did, and hope to see them
again. It was a great thing that they AND their girlfriends stayed
and cheered enthusiastically, because they were our only audience.

Mark and John had decided toi save money by staying in the RV. It
was 92 degrees and humid as hell. I decided they were nuts, and
got a motel room.

There was a three day break in the tour schedule, so I high-tailed
it home and caught John Gaar (remember him with Miss Molly?) with
a killer trio (featuring bass-whiz Mark Harris) at Dan Electro's.
It was a great show. I noticed the Blues Hound and Colleen were at
that singular front table by the bar, obviously enjoying
everything, applauding and holding onto that table all night long.

Soon, I was driving again, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Louisiana. Greg
Ashley and The Mirrors were playing next door in Jackson,
Mississippi, where that day's newspaper headline read, "WILL THE
KKK FADE INTO HISTORY?'. The Mirrors sounded psychedelic and
great! I'll write about that for next week, or the next...

Got home just in time for The Houston Press Awards, where I say de
Sangre and Chrome 44 rock out before we played, followed by
Bojones and Los Skarnales. We were thinking that we must have
played on the coolest stage, because every band was awesome!
Actually - all the stages were awesome, becuase we have so much
awesome talent here. At the awards, I caught live performances by
Chango Jackson and Lonestar Pornstar. Chango was delicious, Mojo
Jackson killing with his Mexi-bass three string guitar, and his
world-reknown 3-string bass style.... Lonestar Pornstar is new to
me (and I only gcaught one song), but these guys rocked and will
find them again!
