FELLOW ARTISTS - CULTURAL IMPACT SURVEY
Dear Houston Artist...
----------
To all artists - do this today!
There’s a Cultural Impact Study in the works for
Houston…
It could result in additional money being thrown our
way in the form of grants and subsidies for artists
and artist's venues.
Please participate, even if you are a part-time
amateur artist. We all contribute to the total
economic impact of local arts, so add your figures
to the survey!
The survey is available at
http://www.ams-online.com/forum/survey.html?
SID=62313Pwd=170d/
And just in case you haven’t heard about this
project, here’s the story:
Houston Endowment, The Brown Foundation, and Wortham
Foundation have engaged AMS Planning & Research, a
national arts consulting firm, to study and report
on the impact of the city's arts and cultural
organizations on the economy, community development,
and the quality of life in Houston. The Cultural
Arts Council is providing the logistical support for
the local coordination (someone had to do it…) and a
group of Houston arts and civic leaders is working
as a Steering Committee for the project.
This CULTURAL IMPACT STUDY has various components.
With the help of the arts community, an
audience/visitor survey component was completed in
May/June 2005. During July and August 2005, we are
conducting both an Organizational Expenditure Survey
(for arts and cultural organizations) and an
Individual Artist Expenditure Survey (for painters,
sculptors, filmmakers, potters, metalsmiths,
writers, dancers, choreographers, musicians,
composers… artists working in any and all artistic
disciplines).
Qualitative interviews with stakeholders and civic
leaders will take place in early Fall. We hope the
study will be complete by Fall 2005 and then the
real work begins: using all the data to make the
case for why the arts are such an important asset to
Houston.
The Individual Artist Survey is designed to measure
the economic contribution of Houston area individual
artists to the overall economic environment of the
region. Think of the money that you spend on
materials, supplies, training… all that adds up and
that is precisely the information that we are
collecting.
Complete the survey no later than Friday, August 12,
2005.
Please do not hesitate to call or e-mail María Muńoz-
Blanco (the Executive Director of the Cultural Arts
Council of Houston/Harris County if you have any
questions or concerns.
