*WEEKEND MUSIC CALENDAR

Wednesday

----------

I’m looking forward to a couple of days away from the humidity, as I accompany Vince Bell for dates in Wimberley and Austin this week. We’ll be at The Cypress Creek Café in Wimberly on Thursday night (w/guitarist Cam King!), and then at Jovita’s in Austin on Friday (w/ Bill Browder!).

My week has been taken by organizational stuff and the Astro’s. There have been several great ball games, and I am one hooked latecomer to this baseball season, but our Houston Astro’s look good.

Organizing-wise, I’ve spent time working on three events (SOUTH BY DUE EAST 2006 in March, BLUESGUY’S BIRTHDAY JAM in February, and the very first WESTERN BEAT – HOUSTON show, scheduled for December 2nd at Dan Electro’s Guitar Bar, featuring auditions for the reality show, NASHVILLE STAR 4).

As I told you previously, I’ve been speaking with our former drummer and current Nashville music mogul and mavin, Billy Block, regarding auditions for NASHVILLE STAR 4. Billy set up several of these in various cities last year, something he was called to do because of his hot career as a music mover/shaker and professional host. Billy, and his WESTERN BEAT company, are the premiere purveyors of Americana music. He hosts a nationally syndicated radio program, his own weekly showcase in Nashville (Billy Block’s Western Beat), and has hosted at the Opry and on CMT. NASVILLE STAR is a successful country music talent search which airs nationally with host Lee Ann Rimes. Billy got us involved last year, and we will again be the hosts and house band this year.

So…

We decided today, that we will hold an inaugural WESTERN BEAT – HOUSTON after the NASHVILLE STAR 4 auditions on December 2nd, so it’s time to find the right talent for both. There are only a couple slots left for young country artists to compete for the NASHVILLE STAR show, and I’ve made a few calls regarding the WESTERN BEAT extravaganza. Nashville Star auditionees will feature a dozen young up & comers, including Allie Danielle and Rose & Ben (so far), and the Western Beat line-up is getting started with Jack Saunders, Rancho Bebop, The Zap Rhythm Band, and my own New Jack Hippies.

It’ll be a great show. It will be an early show, with the NASHVILLE STAR 4 auditions beginning at 7pm. And, it will be very cheap or free (we’re working on the free part, too)!

South By Due East will be two weekends long in 2006, so we need volunteers for everything. We do this film making live music event each year to promote the great music of this great city. MArlo Blue's Guerilla Marketing Experiment (my favorite name for SXDE) has successfully added two more opportunities for the bands and artists we have worked with. Because of our efforts, a dozen acts will receive exposure on episodes of TEXAS LIVE on a satellite TV channel called MAV-TV this fall, plus, we were able to get Ben & Rosalee a shot on the Nashville 4 auditions.

More as it happens…

Thursday

----------

Never finished this letter last night, but got hung up in the Astro’s game. It wasn’t the most exciting game of the post-season, but it was VERY satisfying! As part of my Bar Mitzvah festivities in 1965, my Dad arranged to take all of my relatives for a tour of the Astrodome while it was still under construction, so you can tell how long I’ve been an Astro’s fan. Now we go to the world series… finally! Congrats to the Astro’s (especially to the three on this list).

MArlo and I will leave for Wimberley in a few minutes, so I must cut this short, and get it out to you. We’ll stay at the Mountain View Lodge tonight. You know I’m a night owl, so those of you in the neighborhood should consider staying up with me after the gig at Cypress creek Café tonight. Tomorrow night, we’ll stay with Chelsea after the Austin gig at Jovita’s.

Friday Night – Warner Cable Channel 17 – 10pm

----------

This week’s episode is a classic. It’s from 2000, when Roger and I visited Billy Block in Nashville, and brought Heath Spencer Philip to showcase at WESTERN BEAT at the Exit/In. Heath kicked butt that night – I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. It’s followed by a short, featuring J.B. Money & the New Experience.
