Wow! Time is really flying, as I find myself inundated with work (as per the usual this time of year). We've got new DVD and CD products online, so please consider a visit to www.hippies.tv for free videos, or to www.shop.guyschwartz.com to make a holiday purchase for your favorite local music lover!

New Online Hippies.TV Shows (Just for you guys on the email list this week). Links are below!

The big deal this week is the BILLY BLOCK'S WESTERN BEAT/HOUSTON show on Friday at Dan Electro's. It's a great night of entertainment, starting off with the Houston auditions for Nashville Star 4 beginning at 6-9pm.

It's the same Nashville Star that is on the USA network for the past 3 years, featuring bright shiny new faces of country music, and the talent assembled for this thing is awesome.

If you come for Nashville Star auditions (they need the cheering audience), admission is free, and you can stay for free throughout the night, as we continiue after 9pm with BILLY BLOCK's WESTERN BEAT!

At 9pm, the real fun begins for me. This is the first time we've done a BILLY BLOCK'S WESTERN BEAT/HOUSTON, although this concert series has been ongoing in Los Angeles and Nashville for over a decade, and has had regular events in Denver and Boston, as well.

Roger and I have made visits to Nashville and performed on Billy's show there, but this will be a new thrill - and one that Billy and I hope will become a regular monthly event!!

For those of you who don't know, Billy Block played drums with Roger and I in the seventies, and those two became Houston's top rhythm section for gigs, tours and recording sessions.

Roger took Billy along on sideman gigs and tours with Billy Joe Shaver and (later, Billy took me along) with B.W. Stevenson. Billy and I played as a section (remember - I WAS a bass player... still am if you call me for it) with Gurf Morlix and Blaze Foley and recorded the Z-Rocks album with Randy Soffar.

Billy relocated to Los Angeles and had various large and small successes in music, TV, radio and press/media (getting the house drummer gig at The Palomino, and practically inventing the grouping of musical genres called 'Americana'). After his marriage to Jill, and their move to Tennessee, he's gone on to practically become the musical mayor of Nashville, and we are really proud of him.

The music for this show will largely be a reunion night for Billy, Roger and I. Everyone on the Bill has worked with at least two of us before. Roger, Billy and I will be playing all night with almost everyone, until Romeo Dogs take over at midnight while we party!

What is the Romeo Dogs connection?

Well...

Besides the fact that I had a secret jazz/fusion project with Danny in the '80s - the real connection is that I introduced Mitch to Danny!

The house band will be a fun one, with Billy Block.drums, Roger Tausz.bass, Randy Wall.keys, Cam King.guitar, Bubba Gould.pedalsteel, and me, Guy Schwartz, on guitar.

BENEFIT FOR N.O. MUSICIANS
Pam Jam's Been Working Hard
----------
On Saturday, we'll participate at an all-day benefit for displaced New Orleans musicians. It'll be held at the Kennywould Music Gardens (located at 4651 Clinton Drive), a unique and cool outdoor venue at a former rice mill.

Artists & Musicians include -

New Birth Brass Band
Guy Schwartz & The New Jack Hippies
Matt Hubbard
Dr. Rockit with Teri Greene
The Mighty Orq
Carrie Ann Buchanan & the Apocolyptics
Funky Mustard
Lady Vee
Albert Storo Band

There will be Art cars, Hula Hoopers, Fire Twirlers and local artists offering their art for your enjoyment, and gift consideration. Art will also be sold at auction throughout the day to benefit displaced musicians.

-----------
A QUICK THOUGHT
----------

          Now -
who's going to throw a benefit
for the local musicians who have
had their gigs and income displaced by the
influx of talented New Orleans musicians.

I know that statement reeks of sour grapes, but it isn't.

I don't hardly gig here for money, any more.

That may change. That may not change.

I''m earning a world-wide audience through putting carefully selected nation-wide and world-wide gigs on film with decent to great audio, and making those films (and our 40+ CDs) available to the world.

I decided a few years ago that I would spend my time working to develop a new kind of music career. The video that MArlo and I are working on is a multi-faceted thing. While promoting our whole Houston music scene (which includes ME), we are archiving the music, attitudes and performances of our day and community. No money there, but many of the artists have reported new blog mentions, website comments and subscribers to their mailing lists from all over the globe. We are just beginning to receive income from a few of these films, but it's only petty cash, so far.

Add that to the income from selling CDs and digital downloads (which has increased yearly for me at a rate around 400%), and I'll be able to support myself without live gigs (or a day job - which I've never had).

So for now, the live gigs in town are for fun and/or charity. When we do get paid, the musicians get it all. They need it and deserve it. You know the high calibre of the people I get to play with.

But for them, it is real! It is real for several of our community who may not have even discovered it yet themselves. When they see 13 gigs on the calendar, instead of the 16 last month, they don't even consider the difference. We always experience ups and downs in the musician business (WOW - is that an understatement!!!).

It's time to consider that our new Houstonians are here to stay. I'm happy to see it. Some of them are so knowledgeable, so good (and so professional) that our city's music and scene will only benefit from their participation.

The cream will rise to the top, and some of our friends will be crowded out, unless we find ways to create more venues for music. I suggest more gigs in the early evening, but that will be a hard sell to a Houston audience, not used to such things, and to venue owners themselves.

Life goes on...

So does the music.
