If I don't write again before then - Happy Holiday season to all of you!

OK - It's friday evening, and the only night this week without a prior commitment, so I'll spend a few minutes or hours passing the BluesHound's calendar to you. There's so much to tell you about.

Thanks to many of you for buying the Hippies.TV Series Season One 6-DVD Set. It's the perfect gift for the local music enthusiast. The rest of you can check it out at
www.shop.hippies.tv

The Z-Rocks & RELAYER rerelease CDs are up and on sale at cdbaby.com, too! Both contain the original albums and over a dozen previously unreleased tracks!

Mostly, it feels great to get out and play music!

Starting a couple months ago, with a few dates on the road with The John Wilde Group, and then with Vince Bell, I've begun the proccess of getting to where I'm doing more live music than film editing the past couple of months. The New Jack Hippies have played a half dozen times, too!

This week it really started peaking, with rehearsals, tracking sessions and gigs every day and night except for tonight. Rehearsal over at Rock Romano's Red Shack recording studio for a Tucker Bradley gig, rehearsal with Opie Hendrix (as we figure out what we'll do together on the road when we tour acoustically in April) and gigs at Rudyard's and Dan Electro's.

If you are in the midwest or east coast, and have any ideas where Opie and could play in your area in April, please email back! We're going to be two bandleaders without our bands, but with our songs and acoustic guitars (and banjos, madolins and stuff).

We'll be playing our songs a different way, and out to make new friends and find new places we can return to - alone or with our bands. We'll be happy to play smaller listening rooms or house concerts, festivals, or open large shows (or headline and entertain our asses off if anyone wants to take a chance).

So - I'm getting back into shape for the road. The New Jack Hippies have played a couple of all day shows, a rock show with The Theives, an acoustic show at The Cafe with David Fahl & Mikey, and a country/americana show at Billy Block's Western Beat/Houston. It started to gel from the beginning. First there were blisters, but now I'm starting to develop my bass AND guitar callouses again.

The Western Beat Show was the highlight for me. I started out to put together a big reunion jam for Billy Block, who was in town to produce and MC the regional fast-track auditions for Nashville Star 4 (the reality series on the USA network), but it quickly became a mega-reunion for me and Roger as well. I should have known that from the beginning, since we all played with so many of the same people back then.

A year earlier, we had jammed into the night, after the Nashville Star 3 auditions. It had been loose, with the auditionees sitting in with the band, totally unrehearsed. Billy had suggested that this time we do a Western Beat show, like his great, long-running (14 years?) BILLY BLOCK'S WESTERN BEAT concert series in Nashville and Los Angeles. I began emailing and calling people who we had all worked with back then (when Billy lived here).

We arrived at Dan Electro's at 2pm on show day, and began setting up gear for rehearsal. Rock Romano was there early, so we began Rock's rehearsal with Leesa Squyres on drums. Leesa was setting up her drums for the New Jack Hippies set, and would leave them up all night (Thanks, Leesa!), so she worked with us on the Rock material until Billy arrived, as expected, at 3pm.

After that, we retired to the patio with a scrapbook which Billy had brought along. It was a Kodak moment in itself, but the cameras hadn't yet arrived. The pictures were killer - all of us looking much younger. It was a preview of the night's show, as so many of these people would showed up by the end of the night. One at a time, the expected guests and the unexpected guests blew our minds.

MArlo showed up at 5pm with video gear, and set up as we finished rehearsal, quickly garnering the attention of the guys hired to videotape for Nashville Star as soon as she took the Canon XL-1 out of it's case.

The Canon XL-1 is a great camera. We have a few other cameras that I like better for many applications, but the Canon XL-1 is one impressive piece of machinery to look at. You see it on sit-coms all the time when they want to give you an impression of a really cool camera. You may remember that we call it 'the big dick'! We call it that because of the many times that we walk into a room with ther videographers who may look down their noses at us until we take out the big dick. Especially when MArlo walks into a room with several males with cameras - there's almost always a little disrespect until the XL-1 comes out of the case. Suddenly there is respect - a wierd law of the jungle type of thing, but it works.

As we rehearsed, MArlo's obvious authority was immediately recognized by each of the female contestants for the TV show. One by one, they entered Dan Electro's and walked up to MArlo and asked, "Where's the rest room?"

We went to for mexican food while the Nashville Star 4 auditions got under way. Great food.

When we returned to Dan Electro's 45 minutes later, the parking lot was packed. Cool! So many of the Nashville Star auditionees were so good! Wayne Wilkerson was there to accompany one of them, and it was the first of many reunions. Wayne and Ken Gaines have a songwriters-in-the-round series on Thursday nights at Anderson Fair, and Wayne said he'd suggest me to Ken for that series! Cool, again!

It was soon time to play. The next three hours were blast, as we reconfigured again and again, reliving music with the musicians who made it the first time! Dr. Rockit's music came off great! Jack Saunders was great. He brought along Rick Poss from Austin (another reunion) to play guitar. What a line of guitars - Rick Poss, Scotty Daniels, Bubba Gould, Jack and me! Rock & Jack both contributed great songs to the night. Scotty drove in at the last minute from Austin to replace Cam King from Wimberly who had suffered death in the family. Scotty was a hero, and played like one!

Country sweethearts Rosalee & Ben performed and gave us a break, and let the audience fall in love with them as we had earlier in the year at South By Due East.

Randy Soffar and I played onstage with Billy for the first time, even though billy WAS the drummer on the Z-Rocks album. Z-Rocks rocked. So did Rancho Bebop, with Pat Brennan and Darrel John joining Billy Block for Van Morrison's MOONDANCE.

The came a New Jack Hippies set with the whole house band plus Chaz, Leesa, Carlos and Randy Wall, which eventually evolved into a Zap Rhythm Band set with Billy on the drums. Randy Wall rocked on the organ!

The Romeo Dogs got onstage at midnight and rocked us all 'till closing time. What a fun band!

Billy Block was such a pro. He was the great communicator, narrating the evening as the perfect host, and playing big-time drums, never getting in the way, and never missing an opportunity for the perfect flashy fill at just the right time. He was always smiling and pumping the musicians onstage, as he pumped up each of the audience members while working the crowd when offstage.
If you want to see the ruff edit of some of the first couple sets from the BILLY BLOCK'S WESTERN BEAT/HOUSTON show, I'm uploading a video on another computer right now. Check it out now!

Broadband - crunched the color too much, but it compressed OK...
www.guyschwartz.com/hippiestv/HTV0522WESTERNBEATHOUSTONraw256.wmv

Dial-up - really shitty video 'till I work on it furthur, audio OK...
www.guyschwartz.com/hippiestv/HTV0522WESTERNBEATHOUSTONraw56.wmv

It's rough, but fun. I'll make it better in the spring (when I'm working on the series again)...
