MONDAY NIGHT:Report from The Infield
THE TRADE & THE MEDICINE SHOW - Serious Music & Serious Fun
----------
It was Monday night, and I felt like getting out.
The computer on the left was busy rendering a Michael Heyman concert video I had just edited, and the computer on the right was uploading a Drop Trio concert video to the web. Neither one of these silicon and metal companions would need me for a couple of hours yet.
MArlo asked, "Is there anything to do on Mondays?"
It's a night we are often
at home, whether travelling or in Houston. Not many Monday night gigs on the road. Our Mondays often tend to lean towards a version of most American's Sundays - sleeping a bit late, an afternoon adventure or outing, home early for a home cooked meal and fade out on the TIVOed programs we missed on the weekend.
But - we live in Houston, the big wooly behemoth of the south, home of so much music that Nashville, Los Angeles and New York are all teeming with Texans. There had to be lots of music out there.
I looked at the Blues Hound's calendar and found fifteen 'live music' events and appearances on a Monday night. Cool. Jams at The Red Cat downtown and KKs in Pasadena. The acoustic session at Dean's and Wayne Wilkerson's great open mic at The Mucky Duck. The Mighty Orq was at The Big Easy and there was a rock-a-billy show at The Meridian.
All good choices, but none of
them really hit the spot for my mood.
My workaholic mood.
So -
I decided to print some flyers and fill the boxes of all the programmers at KPFT-FM90.1 with the information and advertising propaganda for next week's big WESTERN BEAT HOUSTON SHOW next Friday at Dan Electro's.
Getting off the new 527 spur and on my way down lower Westheimer, I passed Helios. The parking lots for Helios (and Mangoes next door) were packed, and the parked cars continued all the way around the block on my way to the radio station.
So, I went back to Helios. What a great scene.
Before I left the parking lot, I ran into Jason Jackson, a fine young saxophonist and composer who's work with Quantum 5 and The Secret Beat Society (and The new Jack Hippies) may be familiar to you. If you need a visual, go to
Hippies.TV and check the 'But The Night' video. Jason's behind me on the pier during the last verse.
Jason and I talked about old times, music, life and Mother's Day for a half hour or so. He told me that The Trade was playing great jazz upstairs, and I could hear the bluegrass band I didn't know through the windows downstairs. Jason told me that the bluegrass guys would turn into an electric band on their last set.
By the time I went in, the bluegrass band was taking a break, so I went upstairs to hear The Trade. These Monday night sessions were an old favorite of mine, but it had been a while. The musicians were lined up to sit-in, and The Trade knocked my socks off. One piece after another, these guys demonstrated why many consider them the best jazz ensemble in town. Mixing standards with funk, salsa and lots of improv, Drummer Charlie Perez has held this thing
together for 5 years, starting out as a jazz jam and evolving into a great band which currently includes John Durbin-Trumpet and cat calls; Tim Ruiz- Bass; Tito C.- Tenor Sax; Rangel- Keyboards, and a long list of musicians which rivals The New Jack Hippies roster of the same!
On my way downstairs, I started to feel the floor shake. The bluesgrass band, called The Medicine Show, had picked up electric instruments were now ten or more musicians leading the crowd through frenzied set of music that had this audience stomping, dancing, drinking, sweating, screaming and all types of other things people do when the music takes their self-consciousness away to a world of sublime abandon.
I recognized a few from the old open-turtable jam that my son, Levon Louis, used to hold at The Oven. In an attempt to make music more organically, they had traded in their turntables for instruments, and had connected
with this crowd, who were now their zombies. I was their zombie, too!
It was a lot of fun!
And - this is a regular Monday night thing! Both bands!
The Blues Hound is going to have to get this one onto his calendar.
