REPORT FROM THE FIELD
Headed Home with Opie In My Ears
And Billy Joe Shaver on My Hard Drive
----------

O'Hare airport in Chicago reminds me of train stations of the '50s and '60s, and always throws me back to another era. Everything, from the brushed steel to the floor tiles, takes me back to a someplace earlier in my life. And it's pretty damn busy for 5am!

Sorry I haven't written in a while, but since South By Due East last March, it's been a year of driving through America in MArlo's Scion, and the writing time has been turning to new songs.

I'm on may way home for a few days. There's a couple of Western Beat/Houston shows to put on with Billy Block - including one where we'll host auditions for Nashville Star 5 at Blanco's on September 11th. Buck Jones and Lisa Hayes will join us for that one. We've been hearing Buck's new single, YOU ONLY CALL ME WHEN YOU'RE DRUNK, on various radio stations as we drive across interstate 40.

Speaking of which - if you are ever in western North Carolina, check out WNCW-FM - one of the best radio stations I've ever heard. HEY WAIT - I'm so old-school that I almost forgot you could check them right now on the web (www.wncw.org)

Opie Hendrx' new CD, titled CHUPACABRA is in the headphones as I'm waiting in a long line for a cup of coffee. As far as I know, I've only heard a few of these recordings before, but it begins with DEAD IN A DITCH - not just a song, it's a prayer to Jesus that Opie doesn't wind up like so many of his out-of-control outlaw heroes. Ian Tomzic's stratocaster gives the recording a heavenly tone which belies the fear, remorse and guilt of which Opie sings as he ponders his own future in the wake of the messy death of another of his compatriates. Sometimes Opie's lyrics are so honest that some listeners can't take it. This guy's lyrics can go deeper inside than most.

It's followed by an updating of his classic FIFTY DOLLAR BILL, a rocking duet with John Evans, and an out-and-out release of joyful noise and celebration -

"I found a fifty dollar bill.
I can walk inside the tavern with my head held high!"

I love Opie Hendrix' talent and songs...

When I last wrote, I described seeing Billy Joe Shaver in Asheville.

Turns out Billy Joe was to play a benefit concert in Winston-Salem a few days later. It was an upscale thing in a grand hall, The Stevens Center, at The North Carolina School for the Arts.

We drove into town and looked for the hall. I called Billy's cell phone (yes - Billy Joe and I have both been dragged into the 21st century and now holster cell phones). I left a message. I knew what the van looked like, so I was sure we could find Billy or some of The Diamondbacks guys.

MArlo spotted a crowd, but I said, "Doesn't look like a Billy Joe Shaver crowd."

"What does a Billy Joe Shaver crowd look like?", she shot back as I turned right and gunned it to make the next light.

"Like that!". I responded, pointing two blocks down the road, where I spotted two cowboy hats sitting on a wooden bench by the curb in front of a well-embellished stone building-front. It was Randy Grimes and Jeremy Woodall, drummer and guitarist with Billy Joe's band. Billy had gotten my message and asked them to meet us out front. Once inside, MArlo and I were each given tickets, passes, and introduced the Mike Foster, who was definitely in charge of the benefit, and seemed to be in charge of Crisis Control Ministry, who was hosting the benefit for itself. Mike told us that Elvis had played this hall. Cool!

Next we were given the grand tour, and our own personal guides (with instructions to make certain we had any access we needed to anything)!

Wow!

My guide took me backstage, made serious eye-contact, and told me, "You know, Elvis played here in 1962!"

Looking out from behind the stage curtain, this 100 year old hall was a sight to see with guilded walls and a big balcony. From the front, there was a huge prescenium stage wide enough to hang 40-foot wide flag of Texas as a partial backdrop in front of the velvet curtains.

I was introduced to Frank Martin, who was recording the audio, and was happy to find that we'd get a good board mix, with multi-track recording which could be remixed later. This was looking like a miracle! We were about to make a last-minute Billy Joe Shaver concert movie.

We found our spots and planned our shoot. There was still a couple acts to play, so I headed back to the dressing room to charge batteries. Billy Joe was there, sitting in chairs while laughing and talking easily with the security guard as if they were old friends. That's the type of guy Billy Joe is. Always has been.

He spotted me and excused himself to come over so we could get some of that quality time, too. We talked about old friends. We traded some phone numbers. We talked about Kinky's campaign for governor. We talked about women - specifically and in general. We laughed. Talked about touring and the price of gas. No laughter there!

I first met Billy Joe Shaver in the '70s. He was living in Houston for a bit, but getting ready to move. His son Eddy must have been 10 or 12. Roger and Billy Block were about to start working for him as a rhythm section. He sooned moved to Nashville, which was lucky for me. He and Brenda had a nice house in Nashville, and I was lucky enough that they allowed me to sleep on their couch when visiting Nashville to master an album or try to drum up business. After a short while, Billy was hanging in good company. People were recording his songs. Brenda worked for Johnny Cash, in his business office. Eddy was becoming the most amazing 14-16 year-old guitarist I had ever seen since Jimmy Vaughn and Kenny Cordray.

But, I digress...

It was a great set. Billy Joe Shaver and Diamondback Texas played very well and we got it on tape. Frank got a great boardmix. MArlo said she got some great shots, and I did, too!

Frank gave the boardmix to Scott Thompson the Diamondback bassist who I had met in another lifetime (when he played at Cardi's in a hair-metal band in the '80s). Scott gave it to me with the promise I'd return it or burn him a copy.

I took MArlo and the mix home towards the hills and Donna's place, and immediately burned a few copies. I called Scott on his cell. The band hadn't found any excitement in town and were back at the hotel. I parked to come in to return the disc, but wound up finding him, Randy and Jeremy in front of the hotel. Poor guys with nothing to do. And everyone thinks the road is so glamourous.

I stuffed 'em all into the Scion and drove back to Donna's, where we traded music, stories and good vibes 'til dawn. Billy Joe is lucky! These are some great guys who get along really well, just the thing for a successful road band. They've been on the road for almost a year-and-a-half, and it's just getting better.

It's almost time for my plane to Houston to board.

Opie Hendrix is still in my ears, and it's a great CD!

"Why is there blood on the sheets, dear?
Did I do this to you? Did you do this to me?"

I'm listening to MY SWEET WEAKNESS, on-one-hand a beautiful pop ballad while on the other a song about love and anger, about tenderness and violence worthy of comparison to any Elvis Costello song of the same ilk.

Opie Hendrix' influences come from everywhere and he isn't afraid to show them off. Like many great classic country and blues artists, he borrows most of his music from the classics, but his lyrics and performance are where he rules, and Opie Hendrix connects like Pam Anderson and Tommy Lee.

The brutal honesty of DADDY'S DEMONS is tremendously powerful and will probably scare some listeners. While the main character's wife worries about which of him will walk throught the door, Opie sings -

"I'm gonna get drunk and belligerant,
Act all undignified and ignorant,
And, on the way back home I'll be lucky if I don't wreck my car"

Most entertainers with these habits try to hide it from the public. Opie Hendrix puts it all into the lyrics.

"Drunk & belligerant,
One more beer away from impotent,
And I'll bring Daddy's demons home to you"

His manic mind and often bloated body sometimes can't decide whether to have fun, play music or kill himself (or one of his bandmates), yet he perseveres through all that to write some of the most honest, gut-wrenching lyrics, I've ever heard. Evening Opie loves the world and everyone in it, while late night Opie often drunkenly mutters to himself about how everyone he knows (his band, his managers, his friends, his family) doesn't understand him, how they are out to get him, and how they are keeping him and his musical aspiration down.

He's angry. He's a bad-ass. He's an outlaw, and he wants us to know it!

THE WAY OF THE BUFFALO yields to FIRE IT UP. Two songs which list me as a co-writer, but I like 'em anyway. I love working with Opie. He's not a natural collaborator (he doesn't need anyone else), but to be there to watch him burst forward with moments of brilliant creative spontanaety is a miracle to behold.

Time to pack up the laptop and get on the plane. I didn't even get to tell you about my day with Jonathan Byrd. You can see and hear it at www.hippies.tv

I'll write more later...

But, before I go -

Opie Hendrix is a great entertainer, and puts all of himself into every performance, so go see him play live at the Last Concert Cafe on Saturday - and buy a copy of CHUPACABRA...
