REPORT FROM THE INFIELD:
Home Again
----------
I arrived back in Houston in time to visit DeadAir Sandy and Pat & Rosie at KPFT. Plump was the live band on DeadAir, and they turned in a great set. There had been changes in the band during the past year, and I hadn’t heard them play in long time. Good changes, too – these guys funked out with a high energy level, and did it again the next night at The Night Of The Living Dead tribute to Jerry Garcia, held at Dan Electro’s, where we raised $2k for KPFT.
I arrived late, but the place was packed as Ju Ju Eyeball rocked hard into the middle of an extended jam. I tried to guess which Grateful Dead song the jam had originated from, but it was no use – the
connection to the jams impetus had been diffused into another reality long before I had stepped into the room.
Brad Martin was next, on the outdoor stage, and with him were a group of acoustic musicians performing bluegrass music. Unexpected but delightful!
T.C Smythe (the sound chick) was rounding out a hard day of volunteer work at the outdoor stage with a large smile and a full glass of something.
It was our
turn next – so I asked half the musicians in the house if they wanted to join us onstage. Star Jernigan responded first, and it was a lucky barometer of the set to come.
When I’m with The New Jack Hippies, we stick to our own songs, and therefore, most of the audience is not yet familiar with the music we play. They usually either sit and listen, run to the bar, or get up and leave.
Not so the reaction we had from the audience when we kicked in the opening licks to the Dead’s ‘Casey Jones’ after doing 'That's It For The Other One' and our adventure into the suite of jams which go with it. A roar went
up from the crowd as they piled onto the dance floor. Wow!
Getting back home after a road year is fun.
New bands, new music related businesses and support cartels.
And the house always has new occupants by the time we get home. There’s a possum over the studio, some sweet little sugar ants who have redecorated one countertop, and the dumbest three-inch cockroach in the world who we see every morning – unable to find
it’s way back into the overflow and out of the tub. Time for poison. I hate it, but it’s time. I listen to metal, opera or hardcore street rap when doing poison – how about you? <g>
I digress...
There have been a couple shows, but the past couple weeks have been mostly spent editing video. A lot of work on the SXDE2006 film and on The Billy Joe Shaver film as well.
There's a couple new Western Beat
Houston concerts at www.westernbeathouston.guyschwartz.com (featuring Dennis Marshman, Lisa Hayes, Buck Jones, Idgy Vaughn, Randy Soffar, and Brian Kalinec, as well as me, Billy and The New Jack Hippies.
AND -
By the time the weekend is over, I'll have a film at www.hippies.tv featuring all the great bands I heard at The westheimer Block Party last weekend. I'll tell you about that in the next letter!
Come see us Sunday night at Dan Electro's with Dutch rockers VAN GUNN. We'll be wearing our rock shoes, too.
