*REPORT FROM THE INFIELD: Coming Home To Jam
*SOUTH BY DUE EAST 2007 ARTISTS
*BLUESGUY'S BIRTHDAY JAM
*KPFT AT BIRTHDAY TIME - Several appearances scheduled
*WEEKEND MUSIC CALENDAR

Coming home is always good, whether it’s been a week or 10 months. I ran into a lot of friends at Dan Electro’s Thursday night Blues Jam, and it was great to see everyone!

Jeremy Horton was about to take the stage with Skeets, Dru, John Chupin and a half dozen more, to back up James Reese on a southern-Rock & soul set. Squid told me that their Tuesday night thing at The Continental Club was going great, including Jeremy, Jody and James and a bunch of the regulars at the old Goodtrain sessions at The Rhythm Room! Cool! I followed that lead and hit The Continental Club on Tuesday to find Teri Greene onstage with Randy Wall, Jeremy, and a bunch more. Teri told me that Jay Hooks had been in, too! Wow! I played bass with James Reese and Ian Tomsic, and a good time was had by all. They invited me to play bass for Jeremy on the 20th when he's on the road and I'll be there!

I had been to Rozz Zamorano’s Sunday evening Jazz Jam twice since I had returned, and it was great to see both of these jams cooking with talent and crowds. Vocalist Norma Zentreno was a treat the last time I went, and Rozz was performing stuff from his CDs alongside tons of standards with a couple Fondue Monks and some of Houston ’s top jazzers.

Check out Rozz new CD, ‘A Musical Illustration Of The Human Condition’. His single, ‘Requiem for ‘Nawlings’ has been picked up by 95.7 Smooth Jazz.

Back outside at Rozz' Jazz Jam, Chaz and Sam were asking me about routing to Memphis – they were on their way to represent Houston in the International Blues Competition with Little Stanley Hampton & The Executives. Jeremiah Johnson will rep us in the solo/duo category. It’ll be over by the time you read this, but I’m still going to write my congratulations and best wishes.

And on that other night at Dan's blues jam Teri Greene came outside to ask me to be the bass player on the next set with a singer named Mary. She was cool! With Juan Abair on drums, Mary Allen played guitar and sang with a cool comfort and confidence.

Her band is El Gato Negrito – Hmmm... Someone had told me they liked El Gato Negrito. I invited her to play at SOUTH BY DUE EAST 2007 in March.

MArlo is reading the news at 5pm on KPFT-FM 90.1 (www.kpft.org), so I’ve been tuning in at that time more than usual. Check out the different new music programs in the weekday 3-5pm slot. You’ll be glad you did. Indie bands, punks, local acoustic musicians, electronica…  The New Jack Hippies and I will perform 3 times on my birthday (Feb 17), starting with a midnight appearance on Dead Air, followed immediately by Pat & Rosie's Nightsounds, and then (after a few hours sleep) we'll play on Smokin' Joe's Roadhouse live from 3-6pm (with Van Gunn & The Sonnier Bros.). And on the next day (Feb.18), in my back yard, we'll have our annual BluesGuy's Birthday Jam. I just found that Lorraine is promoting a show with Coco Montoya at exactly the same time, so I guess she won't be there! <g>

Don Walsh called and invited me to pick him up for Domokos’ Pink Cloud gig at Notsuoh. Who could pass up an invitation like that? When we arrived, Aaron Loesch was onstage, rehearsing with a stand-up washtub bass player I didn’t recognize. The bassist knew little or none of the material, but Aaron is such an amazingly musical guitarist that their rehearsal was more entertaining than most bands’ showcase set.

After they quit that, I followed a loud rumble next door to Dean’s Credit Clothing, where a young rock band was performing some primitively dynamic music with great group vocals. Good stuff! I stayed a while. At break-time, they IDed themselves as Another Run. I told them I’d be back later.

Back at Notsuoh, Pink Cloud was blasting it’s ambient electronica noise trance vibe while Don set up an amplifier, michrophone, effects and a guitar to add a pinch of Rusted Shut to the mix. He’s my favorite Irish poet! These guys rocked the place for the next 20 minutes. The crowd was small, a couple dozen people, but they were people who appreciate and act like they understand what these legendary Houston musicians do.

Legends – I catch flak for using that word or concept from time to time, mostly from people who question whether some of our artists were big-time enough to be called 'legendary'. I don’t believe that legendary has to include riches, grand innovation or large scale fame – doesn’t have to exclude ‘em either. Jimmy Deen hasn’t ever been world famous, but he’s been a giant of the north side for decades, and the stories of his exploits (musical & otherwise) have been told and retold. Legendary! Rusted Shut may appeal to one of the smallest underground niches there are, but they’ve had time to find that niche in cities around the world.

Stories of the exploits of Little Joe Washington in Mexico , the time Ezra Charles invented a piece of musical technology that literally changed the world, Roky & The Thirteenth Floor Elevators, Lanier Grieg and the traffic cop (“Give me a cheeseburger and a large orange drink, please!”)… Legends all!

I went back to Dean’s for some more music by Another Run. They rock! It’s so much fun to go out and look for the new talent! I invited them to play at SOUTH BY DUE EAST 2007, as well.  Time to get back to work on some cool films featuring local artists. My Block Party film features a bunch of bands  which I met for the first time at The Westheimer Block Party last November. It'll be up on the web (at www.myspace.com/hippiestv ) by the time you read this, too. It features over 20 bands, including The Mechanical Boy, .belville, Generic Tribe, Studemont Project, and Poison Apple Martini – I need to hit their myspaces, invite them for SXDE07 and friend them up. You should, too.
