*NEW JACK HIPPIES LIVE IN HOUSTON TOMORROW
*SOUTH BY DUE EAST 2007 - Article & Arist Roster
*WEEKEND MUSIC CALENDAR

What a week! It feels so good to be playing with my band again! Ten months on the road were cool as shit, but there's nothing like grooving with Roger, Leesa & Carlos! We have been hired to fill in for a cancelled band at Dan Electro's tomorrow night, too! Come on out, we'll have some time to hang, too. We play one set, with The Rising opening and Stamen closing.

The Birthday Jam was a lot of fun! After two days of New Jack Hippies live on the radio, my birthday party featured outstanding sets from Clay Jeffrey Band, T.C. & The Cannonballs, New Jack Hippies, and a fun jam with Van Gunn, Carlos & me. Glenn Bryant & JB Money sat in along the way, too! MArlo and Roger documented the whole thing (and I helped!), so you'll get to see it soon! Thanks to everyone for the good time and all of the various presents!

If you missed us last week on the radio, I've put the New Jack Hippies Friday night radio performances from DeadAir and Pat & Rosie's Nightsounds up on the web at
and put the Joe's Roadhouse Live performance at

Also on our plates this week have been the film and compilation CD from last year's fest - both coming along great, and showing promise of being ready by festival time! See an almost finished edit of the film on the video page at www.southbydueeast.com

A revised SXDE2007 artist roster appears later in this letter, and a full schedule is up at the SOUTH BY DUE EAST 2007 site.

Snuck out for live music a couple times this week and heard El Gato negrito at Dean's on Wednesday (a regular thing) and Tim Cannon opening Teri Greene's blues jam at Dan's last night. Good stuff!

And now - this...

Here's a cool article that runs in this month's MUSIC NEWS!
----------
SOUTH BY DUE EAST 2007
Celebrating 5 Years of Film & Music!
By Sonia Diditt & Guillermo Nomas
----------
“We’re not protesting South By Southwest any more.” says MArlo Blue, whose guerilla marketing idea was the spark that created SOUTH BY DUE EAST. “Austin has begun including a fair amount of diverse Houston talent since we began planning the first SOUTH BY DUE EAST in 2002. Now we just have a lot of fun doing a festival, enjoying all of the great music, and stressing over all of the aspects of making our film.”

In this – their fifth year, SOUTH BY DUE EAST 2007 (16-19MAR) will feature over 50 local artists and a dozen touring acts, performing live on two stages at Dan Electro’s Guitar Bar (1031 E. 24th Street) as a documentary film is made to promote all of the artists and the richly diverse Houston music scene. Artist schedules and previous films are posted at www.southbydueeast.com, and on a myspace by the same extention.

Bandleader/producer Guy Schwartz, Blue’s metaphorical partner in crime, adds that “In that first year, MArlo took Houston music to Austin, with a street-team of her own, offering videos, press kits and CDs of dozens of local artists. It was our goal to also send live performances over the internet to Austin, and play those, too, but the technology was new and that didn’t happen. As an afterthought before she left for Austin, MArlo rented a digital video camera, and asked me to film the bands and poets, so that she could see and hear the performances."

"M.Martin, DJ Woo, Freedom Justice and I gathered artists and held a four day festival at the earthwire.net studio and performance space, and all of the bands killed! Mikey Farber recorded the audio and I shot video. In the end, we realized that the short film made from the 2003 fest had the most impact, traveling the world on the web, and exposing these great Houston artists.”

Five years into SOUTH BY DUE EAST, Blue & Schwartz have produced 15 short films (22-45 min) and 5 compilation CDs featuring over one hundred artists – all given away for free on the web as files and podcasts. This has provided many local artists with free video and quality multi-track live recordings. The recording engineers donating time to the project are the best. SXDE2006 included Farber, Roger Tausz (Mr. Scarface, New Jack Hippies), GL Moon (ZZTop, Timbuck3), and Space City Backline’s Chris Lucher. Compilation CDs from all of the festivals are available at the fest and at CDbaby.com exclusively.

Schwartz adds, “We’re nowhere without our volunteers! Festivals and films are both large undertakings. Take a look at our list of sponsors, crew, street-teams and publications who help on this, and you’ll see that it’s a community effort. It’s a community event! Just the number of artists playing short sets on what is effectively a movie set (sit around and wait) insures that everyone gets hang-time with their fellow artists and the volunteers in the crowd.”

World reknown fusion bassist (and SXDE artist) Rozz Zamorano says, “They would have never written that ENVY Magazine article if they hadn't seen that video. The video Guy & MArlo made from South By Due East got me right in the door.!"

It may seem funny, but the free admission at SOUTH BY DUE EAST is there to encourage people to come early and stay long as movie-extras, so that all of the artists are filmed under the best conditions including an enthusiastic audience.

“We consider our audience volunteers to be movie-extras, as well!” says MArlo Blue.
