JIMMY RAYCRAFT  is one of my oldest friends in Houston. We met in 6th grade.

I learned a lot of music from and with Jimmy!

In fact...

If it wasn't for Raycraft, I wouldn't have begun writing songs early as I did.

Raycraft was always amazing! On the day that the Beates 'Sgt. Pepper's' album came out, I rushed over to Jim's parents' home. I figured we could go down to Robbie's Record Shop and buy one or two copies. Instead, I found Raycraft hunched over his little record player (the portable type which came in it's own little suitcase), picking out the sitar parts from 'Within You & Without You'. Yes - he was alrdy on side 2 (phonograph records had two sides). He had already picked out all of the parts on all of the songs from side 1!!!

I was spending the nighat his house when I discovered sogwriting. We were 12 or 13 years old when he showed me a song he had just written. It was titled 'Farmer Fred'...

  "Once there was a farmer,
   Name was Farmer Fred.
   Everyone kept flakking him
   and his pointed head.

   Fight farmer, fight!
   Go - Farmer Fred!
Don't let people laugh at you,
   And your pointed head!"

Until that moment, I had never realized we could make up our own songs.

Jimmy took a fall at home recently, hurt his back, and won't be able to work for a while, so please attend the beneft for him tonight at Dan Electro's Guitar Bar, or send some money to help with the medical bills.

Here's what Melissa at Dan Electro's sent out...
FRIDAY AUGUST 10 @ 8;00 P.M. we host a very special event at Dan Electro's, a BENEFIT FOR JIMMY RAYCRAFT.
Sponsored by Rockin' Robin Guitars, where Raycraft has been a long time fixture, we are trying to help Jimmy with medical expenses incurred from a recent back injury.

A long time fixture,  and probably one of the originators of the current Houston music scene,  young, old, rock, blues, punk, country,  you name it- most Houston musicians know and respect Jimmy.  One punk rocker recently told me "Just say "Raycraft" and everyone knows who you mean". A blues cat said, "Man, have you ever heard Jimmy tune a guitar? No one is better". It's not just his musical abilities they respect, but also that Jimmy is a great guy.

From early 70s hard rockers SPATZ,  to 80s party band the DISHES (when I first saw him), and HERSCHEL BERRY and THE NATIVES, THE ROARING CALHOUNS, and most recently BEANS BARTON & the BIPEDS, Raycraft has lent vocals, guitar, and bass to some of the most original bands Houston has produced.

Entertainment starts @ 8:00 p.m. Volunteer entertainers include: SNIT'S DOG & PONY SHOW, ADAM BURCHFIELD, The BRAD ABSHER BAND, PRODIGAL SON, The BOWEN BROTHERS, and just added, a special appearance
(the only one for a while) by BEANS BARTON.

There will be an auction with music gear, show tickets, posters, art, and more, so dig in your piggy bank and bring a few extra bucks. Let's give this Houston music legend a big hand and a helping hand.
