Greetings and best wishes for a great 2009!
Can't say that enough!
2008 had some really cool high points, but eventually sucked an extremely big one.
It started out great, with a CD release and a killer birthday party. BluesGuy's Birthday Jam was in February, where Big Al Bettis, T.C. and the Cannonballs and The New Jack Hippies (with horns) all rocked out loud, with Austin's Mandy Mercier sitting in on fiddle with everybody. Good sounds! The party was fun and the video looked great.
March brought the best SOUTH BY DUE EAST yet, spawning two new TV series ('SOUTH BY DUE EAST Television' & 'MusicEveryMarch'), and a bunch of great volunteer editors and mixers. Big Ups to John Moran, Rock Romano, Chris Rogers, Al Bahmani, Koo Rod and especially to Roger Tausz! All of the help resulted in a lot of cool audio
and video for the deserving musicians! Tonight's episode (on comcast cable 17 at 10:30pm or www.hippies.tv) featuresThe Big Sticks, Giancarlo Cafferena, Chaz Nadege & Mundo Tribe (right after 'Guy Schwartz' Road Journal' at 10pm with Gurf Morlix and I pickin' & grinnin'on top of a big boulder in the land of 30,000 islands)!
After a couple months of editing the new series, it was time to book the summer/fall tour, but the doctor put me on blood pressure medicine and insulin which kicked my butt during June, leaving half the tour schedule unbooked.
Deciding to do the tour anyway, MArlo and I figured we'd do it partly as a tour, partly as a vacation, and partly as a guerilla tour, finding musicians in each town (on google and myspace) and making spontaeneous music video as we go. We met cool musicians and raided restaurants, schools, venues and made stuff happen!
This was a blast, and resulted in my cool new musical reality
TV series, but the lack of income from the guerilla dates, combined with the high cost of everything (motels,food,420) and over $4 a gallon gas ($1.39 a liter in Canada), put us behind on everything financial.
The tour ended, and we arrived back home on the eve of Hurricane Ike. BAM! No power for a month, broken/stuffed drain lines stinking up the house, and then the economy crashed. We were on margin. Our margin was called. We went broke!
Recorded a suprise solo CD on the laptop while the power was out. Just me and my guitar, like I do 'em live when solo, without the band. Stayed at Roger & Kerri's house. Thanks!
Why a solo CD? After the tour, during which I played mostly acoustic singer/songwriter style, it was probably the best I'll ever have these songs down this way, and I've always been asked, "which of these (43 top secret CDs) have the music you did tonight?"
Now I have a CD like that! Yay!
So, we've
carried on, finishing a sucky year that was full of cool stuff, as well.
Now it's time for another birthday jam in the back yard. The 9th annual birthday jam! It'll be held on Sunday afternoon, February 15th, the day after Valentine's Day.
I'll be 57 this year.
You're invited, of course!
Besides The New Jack Hippies, this year's house party will feature a performance by Chango Man, and BBQ by Jim Settles! There's also a rumoured appearance by the Valentine's Day Birthday Boy - Rock 'Dr. Rockit' Romano! I'll let Rock tell you how old he's gonna be!
And yes, we'll be making a film and carrying it live on the internet as it goes down!
I love that we can do this stuff!
Let me know if you want to participate at MUSICeveryMARCH (SOUTH BY DUE EAST 2009), too. The dates are 20-23MAR2009, and the line-up is getting good. It'll be held at Dan Electro's again, as well.
I'll tell you more when I write
next.
