| TV TONIGHT CELLAR CLUB REUNION REVIEW & VIDEO SOUTH BY DUE EAST LINE-UP HOUSTON WEEKEND MUSIC CALENDAR What a cool time I've been having! The trip to Fort Worth for the Cellar Club reunion was delightful. I haven't been in a room full of so many great guitar players at once in a long time! I've made a funny video teaser from the footage I've got (the link is below), and have a written review of the event from the great Linda Waring, possibly the best drummer in Texas for four decades. Following my trip to Fort Worth, all of my technology began to desert me. On Highwat 287, near Waxahatchie, my cell phone died. When I pulled into a roadside park because I-45 was at a standstill near Huntsville, I lost my laptop. When I finally got home, my main computer literally sparked and exploded and began burning - real flames! Something about the cowtown/technology connection I don't quite understand yet, but I'm working on it! So - Without my databases and cell phone address book, I'm attempting to recreate my SOUTH BY DUE EAST 2009 schedules (find the SOUTH BY DUE EAST 2009 schedule later in this letter), work with MArlo to organize the volunteers, gear, food, and just finalizing contacts and set times with all 87 artists! I love this time - when I'm in touch with all of these fascinating, creative people - some old friends, some new. Call of write if we have unfinished conversations to clear up. Big appreciation to Mike Blas for arranging a truck to get the stuff back and forth to Dan Electro's for March 20-23. His band, BLACK QUEEN SPEAKS, will appear on Sunday, March 22. I just previewed a pice of the BluesGuy's Birthday Jam video, too! There was nothing else even remotely like it. And one of the major attractions, besides the nearly and sometimes naked girls, was the amazing music going on with two sometimes three bands a night, all night long! And it seemed to be some of the most amazingmusicians coming in there and playing their guts out. and the competition was stiff. This went on in multiple cities in Texas, and then they began to rotate the bands between the Cellars in Houston, Dallas, And Fort Worth . (I'm not omitting the San Antonio Cellar, but it was not my experience as it closed before I ever played there) This resulted in more competition , now you were insomeone else's territory. We all stole licks, looks, girls, band members and songs from each other…a big melting pot and a very creative one at that…..like gumbo. Anyway the Reunion that took place last Friday and Saturday night in Fort Worthbore no exception. The variety of music and the caliber of the players were delightful to these old ears. I sat with Danny Cochran and we agreed how fortunate we have been (and still are) to be amongst all these great players, to have grown up with them musically and personally. It was good to touch base with friends, musicians, and let me say heroes, again. I saw some old friends, I made some new friends, and some of my old heroes were present, and I made some new heroes too! It was a night to remember. So before I forget..let me tell you about it: The Dallas / Fort Worth contingent was out "en force" on Friday night: from Little PAul, Liz, and Jimmy Capps, playing some of Paul's songs and some others too. I just love me some Liz singing with LP Jack & The Rippers with Randy Cates, Larry Berry, Jack Hamons, and Herman Acker doing all those great old songs we love ! to the The H Brothers with Chris Campbell, Mike Kennedy, Bobby Wilcox, and Buddy Whittington (he's too young to have been at the Cellar, but I bet he wouda been there if he'd been old enough) they tore it up…with Minor Blues and major blues… great! LB Stone with Mike Harrison, Charlie Mitchell, Jas Stephens, Rusty Burns, ChrisMitchell (he's too young too, but he's Charlie's boy and he was actually there, but he was only 2) and Mike McLain. Doin' it just like they used too! Bugs and Me and Sean Frankhouser doin' what we normally do… Followed by an All Star jam headed up By Arvel Strickland, Little Paul Sevy, Randy Cates, Jimmy Capps, Doyle Brashers, Chris Campbell and more... On Saturday night the Sweetheart of the Cellar… Suzy Creamcheese Kicked things off accompanied by Mike McLain, and surprise guests Doyle Brashers, and Jimmy Capps…she sang and played with all her heart just like she used to do…we were all singing with you. up next was Naked Letus with Jas Stephens, Chris Mitchell, Mike Hickman and Charlie Mitchell…doing a lot of Charlies songs…it was super! Then the Gulf Coast Contingent was in the house…Im talking `bout General Boogie.. ok these guys rocked the house …not to mention the fact that they'd never (all) played together as a band until Sat. night…the rhythm section was blistering! With Mickey Burton and Guy Schwartz fronted by Jon Bradford and Chris Campbell on guitar (and Fred Bright on keys)! WOW! Then Austin was representing…with Dallasite Jimmie Randall's band The Dead Pyrates Society with Mark Hamilton on Drums , Jimmie on bass, and John Staehaly and Joe Kennedy on guitars and vocals. These guys added a whole new element to the show… …next up was the exemplary Point Blank and these guys were serious! They took no prisoners. Fronted by John O' Daniel, with Rusty Burns and Mouse Mayes doing searing harmony leads, Larry Teleford kicking some musical a** and Phillip Petty and Davy Crockett holding down the bottom. They were mesmerizing… truly a world class act! You guys rockedthe house. Thanks!thanks to all who made the show great…that'd be EVERYBODY !! You could always count on the Cellar for great entertainment…it's still true! I thought the venue worked, thanks to the staff at J &J's Thanks to MAAAGG and the 7th Street Posse, Jas you did a good thing and I am so Happy you were so honored and recognized for your efforts. I am proud to be in such company. I am looking forward to the videos …and thanks to those guys for doing that too! Linda Guy's note - Linda said too little about how great she and Bugs sounded!
