BLUES SOCIETY ELECTIONS
In With The New
----------
Tonight, I attended the Houston Blues Society monthly meeting and jam, held every last Thursday of the month at The Big Easy. Leonard LowDown Brown was the musical guest jam host, and sounded great. Outgoing president Diunna Greenleaf held court with grace and dignity, as elections were held tp replace her. administration. The new president is Sandy Hickey, and Joanie Kelton was elected VP. Julie Greer, Buddy Brewer and Rick Rice were elected to the other executive positions, and Lyndal Harrington and Ella Hill are new directors. Good luck to this new leadership. Let's all wish them the best inthis noble effort.

REPORT FROM THE FIELD
The Infield Fly Room & Othe Adventures
----------
I can feel it now. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining. I asked for it, andf now I've got it! Suddenly there's so much to do that I really feel swamped.
I knew it was coming. We've been laying the groundwork with orgainizing, brainstorming and promotion since we got off the road last year.
We've known that these changes would be, and will be, hard to pull off.
In order to make a living at this music thing, for myself and all of the New Jack Hippies, it was necessary to expand in several areas. We needed to continue playing in the band and expanding our web prescence, but also must get our songs recorded by other artists, produce music and video for other artists (some for our own projects and some for pay), finish my next book, create special events to showcase and market our work in larger and more effective ways, increase awareness of our musical community, and be ready to head back on the road (to increase our audience, promote our products and music, and to make money as our cash needs demand). We also need to increase awareness that I'm available to talk at all types of media outlets (be a talking head) on any of the several subjects I know so well
And, while that's going on, it was time to create new STUDIO CDs for me and for the band. I know that many of my readers will wonder, "Why the NEED for new CDs? He's got plenty!", but all of the CDs since BLUE JACK HIPPIES in early 2001 have been recorded guerilla fashion(under the name GUERILLA HIPPIES PRODUCTIONS), doing the best we can with whatever is on hand.
I'm good at guerilla recording, and so is Roger, but the Tauszmania man doesn't practice too much of it because he wants no confusion on the fact that he is a world-class STUDIO ENGINEEER & PRODUCER. Most of the CDs that I've put out are recorded live, or on the radio, or from home studio make-do session (I've only recently become truly multi-track at home - Roger's been that way for years). Now it's again the time to demonstrate what we can really do as The New Jack Hippies' Production Team, as well as songwriters/musicians.
Calvin Owens, Heath Spencer Philip and Gloria Edwards have recorded our music since then, and there are 4 studio CDs being recorded, so I feel like I'm on track musically. BLUESGUY'S BIRTHDAY JAM, SXDE and TOURBABY are shaping up to be good annual events, and the SXDE2003 Movie should go far in the effort to promote SXDE, our scene, and each of the artists in the movie. When I write to you, I'm writing the book!
In order to make a workable space, we needed to save the house from forclosure and fix the roof, or give it up and find somewhere else to live. I didn't want to give up mthe house in it's disrepair. It was personal. I like leaving a situation on top, and forclosure and abandonment wouldn't cut it.
In order to make a workable life, we knew that MArlo and I must make the compromises that two people make to live and work with each other. My kids would have to release their claims to large spaces in our former family home. And then, hardest of all, Marlo and I would each need to be relentless in our pursuit of space by tossing thousands of personal family items which are piled up in boxes all over the house.
It looked grim. When Marlo and I left with The New Jack Hippies on the tour in 2001-2002, we had no idea whether we'd be able to pull any of it off.
But we were determined to try.
Today is heavy trash day. After putting a new roof on the house last weekend, we've been clearing out lots of stuff for heavy trash and for charity, to make space for tearing out all the mildewed sheetrock and remodeling this place. Marlo and Carrie Ann Buchanan (who plays Saturday night at The Yale Street Coffee House) have been doing most of that work, while I edit video.
Yesterday, Heath Spencer Philip came by and approved the first five songs I've edited for his video concert. Heath put together a great show, hiring and rehearsing a band of hired-gun musicians (Art Elder, Eric Dane, Chaz Nadege and a saxman I've never met), finding a large venue that he could fill with a large stage (Armadillo in Brazoria) and a great light show (from Party-On-The-Plaza), and hiring a video crew with 3 cameras. I had nothing to do with that show or the video recording, and Heath did well. It was the first time Heath had ever put a show of this size and calibre together, and he did a great job with each of the aspects I've already named. Unfortunately, there wasn't much of a crowd, and Heath had stayed up partying with Eric Dane for two nights without sleep prior to the show, so he looked worn out in front of an empty hall on a bunch of the videotape. Editing will fix that up a bit. Eric Dane looked fine. Eric Dane always looks good.
Three days ago, Dogman and David (from Magic Box) got our new video system up and running, and I began learning all of the new bells and whistles that the 2003 version of pro-quality digital video editing has to offer. There's so much videotape on Guy Schwartz & The New Jack Hippies that it'll take weeks/months just reviewing what we have to work with. In the meantime, Heath has hired me to edit his show, and I have the SXDE2003 Movie to edit as well, so the editor will be busy.
I guess that means that I won't be getting out as much as I did last month.
It was a good month for getting out. I attended several jams and open mics, including Sunday jams hosted by Opie Hendrix (early) and Felix Madison (late) and Tuesday night diversions hosted by MArk Zeus and Keith York.
On one of those Sundays at The Rhythm Room, I wound up onstage with Roger and Chaz anchoring a cool jam band including Jeremy Horton and Matt Johnson on drums, Chris on percussion, and Carrie Ann's husband on guitar. I enjoy that jam! Whether I play on James Wilhite's rig or Ian Tomsik's, it always sounds good. Come early (10pm) and catch Felix Madison before the jamming starts.
It was late on another Rhythm Room Sunday night, after jamming with James Edwards (Moses Guest), Westside Johnny, Jeremy and Ian, that I got a call from Pat Leech, of KPFT's Pat & Rosie's Nightsounds, telling me that one of the live acts for the night had cancelled out on their program. I asked around the Rhythm Room, and we put together a one-off band. We called ourselves THE SPACE CITY MOOD SWINGERS. We talked on-air as if we had been together since childhood in the forties, but it was actually James and Jeremy from Moses Guest, Opie and Don from The Texas Tallboys, and me. What a fun set! Opie started off with 'Margo & Harold' by The Drive-By Truckers, and then Don and I took turns calling songs. What fun!
One another day at The Rhythm Room, I showed up for the afternoon performance and broadcast of Joe's Roadhouse Live. Leonard 'Lowdown' Brown put in an impressive first set, with Uriah Guajardo on the drums, the great Alfred Kennedy on bass, and the lovely and talented Chaz Nadege on keyboards. Leonard Brown plays a nearly perfect fusion of blues, soul and funk, with the correct emphasis on his smooth vocal style and his clean guitar tone. I love what he does.
Next came 'Mean' Gene Kelton (he's not so mean - they must be talking about the guitar) & The Die-Hards. Gene takes the stage with such a great confidence that one has to be impressed. It's a good thing, too, because this is one band (and I've seen them in several configurations) who seem to start the set as one more slightly better than average band, but then get better and better as they loosen and warm up. Make no mistake, the songs Gene Kelton has crafted are good enough to catch one's attention from the start, but this roadhouse-bluesrockin' band (like the real musicians they are) gets better as the sweat increases.
Smokin' Joe Montes took us out to his car to listen to to the broadcast. It sounded great! We talked about the great job that Frank Cupal has done recording and remixing the shows for future broadcast use. As we spoke about future shows (I wish to have 'Bluesguy's Birthday Jam 4' on Joe's Roadhouse next February - got to plan in advance), Joe looked at his watch and said, "Gene has a lot of time left! There's thirty-five minutes until the show goes off the air."
Just then - the radio went dead. Thirty-five minutes my *ss! The show was off the air NOW. We lost the internet feed to the radio station, and Sandy (from KPFT's Saturday night Dead-Air show) had to go to work playing CDs while Joe and the crew attempted to get everything running live again.
It never happened. That was the end of the Kelton broadcast.
However -
Frank Cupal mixed the rest of the show in time for Joe and The Marquessa to play it on the air the following week, and it sounded great. Not bad for The Die-Hards either, with extended programming blocks on two Saturdays in a row! What a great service the programmers at KPFT supply to out music community!
On one Tuesday, Roger, Marlo Heath and I left John Lomax' roundtable meeting for greener pastures, and checked into Mark Zeus' Bayou City Open Mic Showcase at Cosmos Cafe. The list was already too long for us to play, but the talent there was amazing. For free on a Tuesday night, we heard Mark, Selia Quinn, David Fahl and a there were a dozen more waiting to play. We left for The Scorecard, where the Keith York-Gonzomatic jam happens. When we walked in the front door, Chaz was walking in the back door - with keyboards. He was setting up to play, as Jerry Diaz, Keith and Gonzo jammed on. I ran to the car and grabbed an amp. I wanted in on this, too! Before long, we were all jamming! It's a good jam. Each time I've been there, The Scorecard crowd seems unattentive but respectful (busy playing bar games and games with each other). They come up later and express their enjoyment of the music, but it feels like playing in a dark corner with a few folks a hundred yards away doing something else. Thank goodness the band rocks! I've even had the chance to jam with Matt Johnson for a whole set there one night!
