Greetings and best wishes!
I'm just checking in, asking your support for two friends who need it, and campaigning for votes! The Hippies are studio bound this month, and I hadn't planned to write until next week, but there are a couple of benefits that my friends needed to spread the word about.
But first -
The Houston Press nominated me (Guy Schwartz) for songwriter of the year, song of the year, and musician of the year! Yay!
I have been nominated for best songwritier a few times before, and have always held the nominations to be great honors in themselves, but have never campaigned for votes, because I knew that my friends and fans would never stuff the ballot box like some younger bands would. This year, with online voting, it may be different.
Please take a moment and vote for me and my friends at houstonpress.com
There's a little banner at the top of the homepage which takes you to the showcase listing >> ballot
One must support one's own, so I highly recommend spending the time to also vote fro these great Texas artists....
Among my friends and collaborators who are also nominated, you'll find core New Jack Hippies like our great Gloria Edwards (Female Vocalist), and Leesa Harrington-Squyres (Drummer), and Marcos Melchor (whose band - THE TRADE - is nominated for Best Jazz). In the past year, The New Jack Hippies have done a CD and several live shows and radio performances with Little Joe Washington, who is nominated for best blues!
Amongst those not nominated are Chaz Nadege (keyboatds) and Roger Tausz (Bass). Please consider write-in voting for these great New Jack Hippies!
Other friends and collaborators who are nominated this year include Ian Varley (Best Pianist for him, and best Jazz for DROP TRIO), Opie Hendrix (Best Roots, Best Song - but vote for me on the song!), Graham Guest (Best Album, Best Musician - give Graham's band, MOSES GUEST, the album vote, but vote for me as best musician!), Nelson Mills & Calvin Owens (both nominated for horns - what to do? - there should be more than one category for ALL horns!).
The Best Rock in Espanol category kinda upsets me! Who can compare Chango Jackson, DeSangre, Irene and Los Skarnales in any way other than their sometimes spanish lyrics? I love all of these bands, and have pals in each!
In the past year, I've worked with Mark Zeus (Best Folk/Acoustic) and DUBTEX (Best New Act) and SoundPatrol (Best World Music) on the Homegrown CD, Hollister Fracus (Best Metal) and Chango Jackson (Best New Act) on the SXDE fest and movie, as well as working with Tin Henry (Best Rock/Pop) and Secret Agent 8 (Best Horns) on TOURBABY.
Let me do some self-indulgent self-promotion next. As it says above - I've worked with all of these great nominees in some capacity in the past year (except Ian - he's a new friend), While many of these artists have put out a CD in the past year, I've put out eight CDs full of original material, including collaborations with Gloria Edwards, Little Joe, The Wandering Poets, and all of the great artists (54 musicians) who contributed to the Homegrown CD.
My four big shows in town during the past year - TOURBABY, BLUESGUY'S BIRTHDAY JAM, SXDE, and The Joe's Roadhouse Live on the Blues Women's Day were hugely successful, and the videos for the SXDE movie I'm making are already promoting our scene and the other musicians from SXDE
Of the list of great talents who have been nominated, I feel that I have earned this one. I AM Houston's LOCAL MUSICIAN OF THE YEAR.
We work hard. We make good music.
We deserve this type of honor and respect.
Congratulations to all of us!
And thanks to all of our friends, all of our fans and to The Houston Press for giving time and recognition to all of our great musicians here in Houston!
Please take time to vote -

TWO SATURDAY BENEFITS
For Ozelle and Jinelle
---------
-----
This word from Mikey (Mike Farber) -
Benefit for Ozelle Roberts
Saturday, July the 12th
Mike's Ultimate Sports Bar
8670 HWY 6 North
As many of you may know, I was the producer/engineer of a local Internet Radio show that lasted a very short 2 and a half years... In that span of time I was honored to be able to record over 140 of the area's most listened to musicians.I say that not to stand on this soapbox and laud but to respectfully submit a request for a dear, dear friend. Suzanne Pratt is one of our own and her dearest and closest friend for over twenty years is not feeling himself anymore. Ozell Roberts has been diagnosed with a condition that has Suzanne very concerned. He has lost over 50 pounds sofar but is feeling pretty good, considering...I can remember hearing this duo years ago in the smallest of 'Holes-In-The-Wall' in Conroe (of all places) and recalled hearing the most beloved music and harmonies created simply BY JUST ONE PERSON. If you all know Ozell, you know he plays EVERY instrument at their gig's, himself. The meat of the mater is that Suzanne is secretly planning a surprise benefit for Ozell this Saturday, July the 12th at Mike's Ultimate Sports Bar, 8670 HWY 6 North. This is one mile south of 290 and one block north of West Road.I am going to record the audio from the board there and hope to find someone (you know who) to record the video. Suzanne's intention for this is that when Ozell does become too ill, he can reflect on the love and support of the people that were there for him when he needed us the most.I cannot stress enough the truth that in our community, in my lifetime, I have always seen the best of the people I love the most when they come to the aid or stand by the side of someone like Ozell Roberts. I do not what to let Suzanne or Ozell down. They mean so much to me and my community and I would hope you feel the same.If you want or need to contact Suzzane, her number is (281) 658-4250 Please join us.Â
