GUY SCHWARTZ THE NEW JACK HIPPIES
this week
-----
We play twice this weekend -
Friday at Galveston's Balinese Room (Seawall @ 21st), and
Saturday at St. Pete's Dancing Marlin, Downtown (main @ Congress).

I haven't written you much lately because there is not much new to write about Guy Schwartz The New Jack Hippies.

We ARE busy, though! We are busy setting up key events (TOURBABY, SXDE, and BLUESGUY'S BIRTHDAY JAM 4) and tours for next year's blitz, while working on 4 studio CDs, two movies and my book. But - the details of these sessions, phone calls, emails and all of this work sound exactly like they did last month! SO I move onwards....

Just got word that Roger and I will join Jennifer Fitts at her songwriters show at The Slide On Inn on the 17th of September. That'll be cool. We hardly ever do acoustic shows here in Houston!

*GLORIA EDWARD'S NEW CD
Texas Soul Sisters
----------
One busy Hippie is my buddy, Gloria Edwards - who has a new CD coming out this month in Europe, Japan and the USA, called 'Texas Soul Sisters' on Austin's Dialtone Records.

The CD release party is scheduled for September 27th at Cactus Records.

We'll be there as the house band that day, and then the ladies will do a CD release party with us at St. Pete's that night!!

Joining Gloria will be several of her fellow 'Texas Soul Sisters' from the CD, which features Miss LaVelle White, Glenda Hargis and Miss Candy, along with 5 new tracks from Gloria and Nelson Mills III.

I've heard Gloria's tracks and they sound great! I can't wait to hear the whole thing....

TRU SOL
My friend Jerry Said To Me....
----------
I'm listening to Tru Sol's first album, full of funk and soul music in their several sub-genres, but groovin' really big time with killer background vocals (and lead vocals, too) by my new friend Jerry Richard, and his partner, Rio.

These guys have spent the past few years making their band roadworthy and developing the beginnings of a touring route that will soon support them if everything goes right.

Tru Sol's new CD will be out next month, and the band is planning big CD release parties in Lake Charles, Beaumont and Houston.

I like this band. They take the songs that Jerry and Rio write and flesh them out into 3-D, providing the perfect backdrop for frontman Richard's seemingly insatiable urge to dance. Jerry Richard entertains with the open-armed fervor of a Sunday morning Stevie Wonder. Rio plays guitar without regard for convention, speaking in world-beat tongues of funk. Chuck Broadnax (who used to form the mighty rhythm section of New News with Slop Jar Junior bassist Mike Mead) plays drums. Maurice Bullock plays bass. 'Nuff said! Multi-instrumentalist Charlie Silva, who played with Tru Sol in 2001, is back from Brazil, and playing with the band again!

Check trusolmusic.com for dates and updates....

POETRY N REVERSE
Sept 21st!
-------
Some of the most fun I've ever had, happened on Sunday nights at Houston's earthwire.net during 2001-2002. The loss of the earthwire studios earlier this spring ended all of that, but spawned new opportunities for the droves of poets, artists and musicians who frequented the performance area of that great institution.

A good opportunity to see and hear a well-chosen group of them perform together will happen this month, as Mike McGuire's POETRY IN REVERSE perform at Diverse Works on Sunday afternoon, September 21st.

In a show dubbed 'Dissent Is A State/ of Mind', THE SECRET BEAT SOCIETY will present a multi-media performance mixing poetry, music and visual arts that will entertain, bedazzle and create increased brain-function in the heads of the audience members.

Saxophonist/arranger Jason Jackson has worked the music into a high quality blend of sophisticated sound and melody that was only sometimes acheived at the ever-spontaneous earthwire.net. Jimmy 'the matador' Dupuy (a man who has spent his life avoiding the bull) plays second sax in this production, which is rounded out by (Jason's QUANTUM 5 bandmates) Lucas G and Anthony Garza on bass and guitar. Ruthie Langston on Cello and some guy named Vaughn on the drums. They sounded great at the rehearsal I attended.

Poetry and performance will be provided by some of our best poets, including Houston's ambassador of poetry, Kool B, the ever thoughtful and provocative David LeJeune, Living Art's Michael Woodson, and the edgy, chain-smoking poetry icon - Alex Wukman. More will be provided by the talented Lyric Osiris, native blood poet/performance artist Soldier Blue, the nation's 10th ranked slam poet, Aaron Trumm, and POETRY IN REVERSE producer Mike McGuire, himself!

All of this will happen within a visual environment including film, video, slides and other projections, featuring the psychedelic imagery of Marlo Blue, and visual pieces by some of the poets....

LOCAL MUSIC YAHOOGROUPS
Talk, talk, talk, dept.-
----------
The preponderance of internet discussion groups on the web, has done much to bring portions of our musical community together. There are so many Texas discussion groups out there, that I am bound to piss off several I don't mention by name.

But, yesterday, I recieved word that a fan of Houston's great Moses Guest has started a discussion groups for the band's fans, at MG_Heads@yahoogroups.com. I joined immediately. I'm a fan.

I guess the first such Houston based group I ever joined was bayoucityblues@yahoogroups.com, begun by bluzfrek (aka Frank) a few years ago, but other groups I have enjoyed on yahoogroups include newjackhippies, houstonbandsforum, lastconcertcafe, HoustonMusicianExchange, texas-tribe, texastroubadors, Houston-NORML, texasmusic, texasjams and teamhouston.

Log on and make new friends....
