*HEATH HITS THE WATER WITH BOWSER
*CAROLYN WONDERLAND GOES TO AMSTERDAM - WANNA GO?
*THOSE NEW-FANGLED BIKERS OF TODAY
*WEEKEND MUSIC CALENDAR
The music and musical exploits have been very exciting, cool and different lately. Heath is going cruising with Bowser (from Sha-Na-Na), a whole lot of Houston artists get together this weekend to play a bunch of Bob Dylan's songs, and Carolyn is going to Amsterdam to play music and see Bob (and Marlo has decided to go with her and shoot a movie of the whole thing), and more....
But first -
I'm happy to say that all the medical test results are in, and I'm going to live a bit longer. The stuff they cut out of me was determined to not be life threatening. YAY!
The gigs have ranged from a great Dialtone Records in-store CD release party at Cactus Records with the Texas Soul Sisters, to a fun-filled afternoon with Gloria and The Hippies at Galveston's Fuddrucker's on the Strand during the Lone Start Bike Rally (thanks to Alan Cunningham's help), to another amazingly musical night at St. Pete's Dancing Marlin, which then turned into another (second time) frustrating night when the management tried to charge us double for the band's food tab and then made us stay an extra hour to grovel for less than our promised pay.
The funniest recent gig was a bike rally near new Braunfels, TX. The promoter had never scheduled country and Americana music at one of his rallys before. We were a last minute substitution, and were the only act on the show who would play some rock, funk or blues along with our Americana (I figure it's all American) music). On my way from Austin to New Braunfels, Marlo's LTD threw a belt. After determining that the belt in question was for the air conditioning, and that I could drive safely (but warm) without it, I continued my journey, stopping along the way for another belt. I knew that some bikers at the event would know how to put it on, and that they would be friendly, willing and able, as usual.
The bike rally and show was in a great location about 12 miles up River Road. Entertainment was provided by an acoustic Opie Hendrix (w/Don Sachere), Guy Schwartz and The New Jack Hippies, Shelley King, and 1100 Springs. All the bands were good. Shelley asked me to play guitar with her band, so I grabbed Chaz, and we had a good time. Catch Shelley. She's got a great voice. I didn't see the other bands. I drove back to Austin to stay with my daughter, Chelsea.
Now for the funny stuff -
Roger had to leave immediately after our set, for a bass gig in Killeen with Tracy Conover. During Shelley's set, our cell phones were buzzing off the wall. Roger had left his bass behind! He could borrow a bass, but wanted to make certain that we grabbed his!
During Opie's set, I ran onstage to sing harmony on 'My Favorite Waitress". Then, During our set, Opie appeared onstage to dance with a beer in his hand and a large Sombrero on his head, so I handed him my guitar for a quick solo. He played wonderfully, handed back the guitar and promptly dropped his drawers. Life is good!
Turns out that Country/Americana day at the bike rally demonstrated some things that we all had known or suspected about today's bikers. No matter how many times Cadillac Bob announced that the wet t-shirt contest was about to begin, no matter how late it got, this crowd held no women who were wild enough to volunteer. The bikers of today aren't your father's angels and banditos. Bob said that there won't be any more country music days at his rallies. Time marches on....
And...
By the way...
None of the bikers I ran into knew how to replace a belt on an engine.

BOB DYLAN x 2
Thanks, Bob!
----------
Bob Dylan comes up twice in my ongoing musical conversation with life this month. Many of us will gather this Saturday night to play the songs of Bob Dylan, and then some of us will be off to see Bob perform in Amsterdam!
Dylan Thing #1
----------
David Fahl and Mikey Farber have put together a Bob Dylan tribute concert at SUPER HAPPY FUN LAND on Saturday night, Oct 11th, and it's looking like a lot of fun. The show will begin acoustically, with many artists doing a Bob song or two. Then David Fahl will do a set of songs, beginning acoustically-winding up electrically. Then I'll take the stage to kick off a Dylan Jam with a Jam Band including Teri Greene and Sweet Mama Cotten.
Dig this list of participating artists (in anticipated order of appearance) -

SUPER JAM
Super Happy FunLand is located at 2610 Ashland, in the Heights.
Directions from Yale & 610: go south on Yale to 27th. turn right, go to Ashland. turn left. Directions from Shepard & I-10: go north on Shepard to 27th, turn right, go to Ashland, turn right. Super Happy FunLand gives out beer for "donations". Lucky & Jinelle Boyd from mytexasmusic.com will be at the show, manning a table of merchandise. They'll have CDs from the performers at T-shirts designed for the event!
Dylan Thing #2
----------
Carloyn Wonderland is going to play 2 nights in Amsterdam. The trip is scheduled to coincide with Bob Dylan's two appearances there (smart move) and Carolyn's birthday! Darren Fischer, from Carolyn's office, has been scrambling to put together a big trip for 30 friends and fans to go, too. If you want to get in on it, respond to them fast! We're all going to both Dylan shows, too!
So -
Marlo has decided that she and I should go, too, and shoot the whole thing on three cameras for a 'Carolyn Goes To Amsterdam' type of movie! She's scrambling for a third camera and bucks to pay for it all (the life of an executive producer), and I'm scrambling to line up interviews at all of the stations who play my stuff there (all 2 of them) and possibly pick up a gig while there.

HEATH HITS THE WATER
Bing-Bang! Shama-Lama-Ding-Dong!
Heath Spencer Philip Lucks Out & Steps Forward
----------
Opportunity only knocks once!
Or does it?
As some of you know, Roger has produced Anthony Moore, the great southern California soul singer, for several years - beginning when Roger and Rosie were living in L.A. Anthony's version of my TIME TO LET IT GO is probably better than mine. He's got a great voice.
Anthony has visited Houston on several occasions for recording sessions. On these occasions, when there was a New Jack Hippies gig to be played, he came along and performed with the band.
What most of you don't know is that Anthony's 'day job' is to be one of the back-up singers and featured vocalists in Bowser's act!
You guys must remember Bowser, don't you? He sang bass in Sha-Na-Na, clowning around the stage in rolled uo blue jeans and a sleeveless black t-shirt, hair greased up like... like... like Heath greases up his hair! John Bauman, who is the man behind the Bowser character went on to do typical celeb stuff (talking head work, hollywood squares, etc.) and have his own syndicated TV show after Sha-Na-Na. He still performs a rock-n-Roll vegas-style act.
Well...
When Anthony was in town a couple years ago, he sang at one of our gigs where Heath was also singing (Gloria Edwards was there that night, too - we really rocked!). Anthony was impressed, and knew that Heath would fit the Bowser thing. The first opportunity came two years later. Bowser needed a replacement, and Anthony called us for his number. It was during a dark period, and neither Roger, I, or Heath's folks had any way of reaching Heath in time. A missed opportunity.
This time, when Anthony called, I had a good number on Heath. The replacement who was hired last year would be missing November gigs with Bowser, so they needed a replacement for the November shows (all cruise ship gigs). Heath was back in our sphere again, as he and I were working on the editing of his live performance for a 60-minute video special. Bowser came into town a couple Sundays ago, and went straight to Heath's parents' home, where he auditioned Heath for a couple hours.
Heath passed the audition!
