*Guy Schwartz & the New Jack Hippies at Rowdy's on 1960 tonight
*KPFT Fund Drive
*Weekend Music
Not much time to write, so here's the Hippies calendar, the Houston Music calendar and a few well-chosen words about KPFT-FM.
Guy Schwartz & the New Jack Hippies perform in the north side of town tonight Friday, Oct. 17th (something we rarely do for some reason I don't know). Then we play twice at The Rhythm Room on Washington Ave twice - on Monday and Wednesday.
Friday, 10.17.03
Rowdy's - 900 1960 W - Roger, Chaz, Jimmy Rose, Marlo and I
will head north for this gig,
courstesy of Buster Pennington's recommendation,
and Ray Coleman's booking. Thanks, you guys! 9:30pm
Monday, 10.20.03
Rhythm Room - 1802 Washington Ave - Roger, Chaz, Andy Rogers, Marlo and I
will attend the Blyther Spirits Reunion, which will also be,
a benefit for Philip Green, who needs a liver,
We play at 8pm, on a bill which features carolyn Wonderland,
The Hightailers, Guppies From Outer Space,
James/Reese Projectand more... 6pm
Wednesday, 10.22.03
Rhythm Room - 1802 Washington Ave - We'll probably leave our gear,
because we're back at Rhythm Room to do two
longer sets on Wednesday, Starting qat 11pm.
Jango Rhythm will open at 9:30pm.
Besides telling you about the Guy Schwartz & the New Jack Hippies' performances this week, this whole letter is about KPFT-FM. They are doing their fund drive this week. As always, they need money in order to continue what they do, and what they do is to bring programming choices to the radio that are influenced by the choices of community volunteers (and NOT influenced by large corporations and the government). For musicians like me, this important outlet, with it's local broadcast and worldwide live webcast allows access to a worldwide audience without leaving town.
It helps the continiance of each individual program, when pledges are recieved during their program. Please pleadge during programs which feature music by local musicians, be it live or recorded. The news and info are important, too, band probably more important NOW than ever, but I'm pitching for Sandy's Dead Air Show, Pat & Rosie's Nightsounds, the blues programming on the weekends and the rock music late at night.
Here are some words from Sandy W, and don't forget The Blueshound's Blues Howl at The Cactus Moon on 11.2, which also benefits KPFT.

DEAD AIR SPEAKS TO YOU
Words From Sandy
----------
Hey Now -
Look at all the stuff that is broken and does not work... Others have and try as they might often times it can't be fixed. Then there is the stuff that works well. Stuff like KPFT the commercial free drinking fountain that serves the beverage of the mind, frequently consumed through the ears... Nutriants that you can't do without!
This Friday night on or about 11PM Dead Air goes into its second and final week to raise a few bucks for the station. KPFT is now over 90% listener funded - no goverment nor corporate involvement. Sure you can pledge any old time you choose, however it would be good if you could do it during Dead Air... The goal is around $1300... If 20 of you that get this note go $65 each we are there!
I have one copy of View from the Vault I, II, III, and IV. Only one copy of "The Greatful Dead go to Nassau," and as many copies of the two disc Dead Air sampler featuring all of 5/1/70 (first set acoustic, second set electric) with acoustic selections from 10/3/80 and some gratuitous Rat Dog and JGB just for extra nutrition. There is also a GW busH(it) Voodoo doll (from deep in the bush with its own starter pin set). The biggest thanks is a health KPFT and Dead Air - so don't delay what I say !
Hope to hear from you Friday night - the music will be good and we will try to keep the pitching to a minimum.
thanks and peace
