*HIPPIES ON KPFT TONIGHT *WEEKEND MUSIC *SXDE FILM FOR SXSW   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #70 of 237 |
Once again, the time to write is limited, but I'll do my best. Gotta tell you that Roger and I will play tonight on the Dead Air program on KPFT-FM90.1 (and www.kpft.org), at midnight CST, and want to tell you more about all the cool music, recording and video stuff from the past couple of weeks!

Last time we spoke, I was suffering a crashed drive. Dogman got me up and running, and we were able to complete and submit 11 short films to the SXSW Film Festival. There were over 100 area artists and musicians represented in these films. One of them was a film about last March's 'SOUTH BY DUE EAST Guerilla Marketing Experiment', where Marlo set up shop at SXSW, while I videotaped 35 Houston bands and poets for her, which we now present to SXSW on film. If any of these films get in, we will set up a hospitality suite, show all of the films, and be able to furthur our attempt to promote the music, words and images of this great Texas cummunity we work in and with! I'll list and describe the films on the website and link to it next week, for those interested.

And, of course...

That's why I didn't write last week. after the loss of the computer for two days (just 5 days before the SXSW deadline), I was a non-stop video editor for the rest of the week, sneaking out only to play music a couple of times.

We lost the 40 minute first edit of the Carolyn Wonderland in Amsterdam film, but the original source tapes are intact, and a second shot at it will only yield a better edit. The only piece saved was the 4 minute romp in the park that is showing at hippies.tv - if you haven't been there yet, it's our new video site (www.hippies.tv).

It's 4am on Friday morning, and it's been a long day. Most of it was spent doing more work on the film about the POETRY IN REVERSE show last September, and about the members of The Secret Beat Society who performed and produced that show. It's some of the best video we've got. The 9 short films that Marlo made to be projected behind the 9 poets, added a stunning visual aspect which makes it all look as good as anything on TV. The performances by Kool B, Ragah El, Lyric, Marie Brown, Michael Woodson and Aaron Trumm were exceptional, and everyone else was good, too.

Alex Wukman was here today, adding some extra voices to his poetry from that show. The Secret Beat Society Band (led by Jason Jackson - New Jack Hippie #70), was mixed too high at the live performance, so we needed more of Alex' voice recorded over it.

There's been a lot of recording lately. I've started work on 4 new songs since the film deadline ended, and we spent yesterday with Roger at The Hippie House (non relation), working with produced Randy Jefferson, who has recently struck a dead with DopeHouse Records to run the studio. It's a georgeous and roomy studio, designed by Mike Dean, a few years ago when he was all over the map working in the best studios in the country.

Speaking of cool studios - A few days before that, Roger and I invited Marlo and Opie to join us at Digital Services, as we added voices to Roger and John Moran's production of an album full of nasty songs from the turn of the last century. It's funny stuff, and nowhere near as nasty as todays rock, comedy and hiphop get, but each of us now has one of those corny songs stuck in our heads. It was more like doing musical theatre than making one of our 'normal' albums.

Playing-wise, Andy Rogers joined Roger and I at Rudyard's to play at a tribute show for Pat Sullivan, which also included Opie Hendrix and The Texas Tallboys (Pat was the original TALLboy) and Ezra Charles.

On Sunday, I had a great time (doubled), as I enjoyed another one of Wil Space's TEXAS HOUSE CONCERTS Sunday afternoon series, and also got to enjoy sitting in as DROP TRIO's bass player for the day. Their instrumental jazz jam music was challenging learn, and I had a great time playing with them (and would be willing to do it again). The bar-b-que was tasty, the company was cool and kind, and the jam after our set (featuring members of Drop Trio AND The Psychodillos who had played earlier) was a blast. I knew it was supposed to happen, so I brought a guitar, too!

That's about all I have time for now. Gotta get some sleep. I'll write more about Amsterdam when time and deadlines allow, probably while waiting for the computer to render pieces of the video as I re-edit next week. It's all getting foggy in my not-too-long-term memory, so the film will be a good reminder of what we actually did! <g>
