Happy Holidays to everyone. If you don't celebrate one of the religeous holidays which fall at this time of year. I hope that you still enjoy the vibe of the season.
I am working straight through the holidays. There is sooo much to do.
Don't get me wrong - I'm making an effort to get out, too, but the goals we set for ourselves were too big for a lot of socializing or even a lot of New Jack Hippies gigs. I will see the kids and Mom, go to a couple parties, and have some out of towners over for visits and jams (if I go anywhere tonight, it's to Dan Electro's to hear Denim - and visit with Bill Browder and David Moerbe), but I'll be here mixing the 4CD Set (and doing a few last overdubs), and finishing the films for most of the next month.
After that, the work on our two big winter live-music events (Bluesguy's 4th Annual Birthday Jam in February & SXDE2004 in March) will take most of our time. I've already lined up a bunch of great guest artists for my birthday party, including Gloria Edwards, Little Joe Washington, Sandy Hickey, Jerald Gray, Kool B, Opie Hendrix and Heath Spencer Philip (all confirmed), and have a few other friends (Wonderchicken, Alan Haynes, Tracy Conover, and a couple I can't say) who have said they'd like to be there with us, but don't know which towns they'll be playing in that weekend... yet.
The object of March's SXDE is to promote our musical and artistic community. Marlo had an idea for this guerilla promotion last year. During Austin's SXSW Fest in March of last year, she kept a promotional presence in Austin, while DJ Woo, Freedom Justice, Martin and I exposed 20 Houston bands, and a similar number of poets and musicians, over a 4 day period at earthwire.net while we videotaped.
This year, a film of that event is entered into the SXSW Film Festival, and will be released later next year. Our plan is to attend SXSW during the Film and Interactive show, and then have another event like last year in Houston (and make another movie - there is a pattern here). It is our hope that this type of exposure will help everyone! If you have ideas, or wish to contribute time, location and talent to this year's event, please email Marlo or I.
SATURDAY NIGHT
Tapir Productions
----
On a similar note - This Saturday night, Tapir Productions will have a free event at The Last Concert Cafe, showing pieces of the filming they've done during their concert series. We are in no way connected with these guys, but want you to know about the great work they are doing, promoting up-and-coming new bands, and recording for the archives and promotion of all!

GETTING OUT
I do - Really I do!
----------
Last Thursday, we attended Rob McKinnon and Jolene McMaster's party, which doubled as a party for Houston Women In Film and Texas Lawyers and Accountants for the Arts, which featured a performance by The Calvin Owens Blues Orchestra featuring Gloria Edwards. The band was great, and Gloria was divine, but Calvin was grouchy, firing people and getting mad at everyone - including me! I hope that the doctors get his medicine and blood pressure regulated soon. A sick Calvin Owens is terrible thing to waste!
We continued our Thursday of two Calvins by visiting the Last Concert Cafe for a dose of the Hightailers. It was a good move! We walked in to one of those great Hightailers jams! Not only were Dogman and Little Screamin' Kenny leading the band through it's tricks, but they were embellished with Scotty Daniels on guitar, Chaz Nadege on keyboards and Randy Woodard on percussion. It sounded great, and needless to say, bassist Calvin Hall, Jr. was considerably more peace3ful and happy than his fellow Calvin had been an hour before!
On Friday, Roger and I played a set on the Dead-Air show on KPFT-FM. Opie joined us for this acoustic set, and a good time and good music was had by all. Thanks, Sandy! Then - on Sunday night, as the jam at The Rhythm Room wound down, I got a message from Pat Leech, which led to an impromptu live radio session with Chaz, Teri Greene, Kym Smith and Marguerite. My life is great sometimes!
On Tuesday, Gloria Edwards came by to lay down a vocal track, and then we went by The Volcano for John Lomax' regular round table, but found it to be gone for the holidays - to resume in January. Didn't matter - Marlo, Gloria and I hung with slam poet/bandleader Aaron Trumm, Texas Slam coach/promoter Tamara Nicholls and drummer Luis Cortes from the band 'Space City Funk'. After that, we went to hear Carolyn Wonderland, and to pick up a sound source to the Amsterdam shows from Darren Fischer. CArolyn will play this Saturday at The Rhythm Room, on Joe's Roadhouse Live (the same show that the Birthday Jam will be on on Valentine's Day).
Carrie Ann Buchannan came by late, after we had dropped off Gloria and gone home, and at Marlo's request, she and Marlo added more voices to the Gloria track (we know that the girls just wanted to be on a track with the queen of Texas soul!)
Michael Heyman called - he's looking for a bass player. As a matter of fact, I'm looking for musicians who want to go hungry on the road in 2004.
Here's the weekend calendar. I'd better get back to work!
