Happy new year! It's been a great one for us, so far!
I've got plenty of stuff for you today! There's new video at www.hippies.tv, and there is the last installment of the Amsterdam with Wonderland story at www.bluesguy.com/report!
We won't rest on our accomplishments yet. In 2003, although the byear was set aside for more production than live gigging, we played 50 gigs in 6 Texas cities, released a CD on The Wandering Poets and a SXDE live CD, had successful events at the Birthday Jam and SXDE, entered 11 short films into national film festival competitions, and did most of the production on 3 feature length films and over 60 songs for the new 4 CD set. I wrote over 100 new songs and collaborated in the studio and onstage with many new (to me) musical faces, including live performances with Tony Xpress, Mojo Jackson, Shelley King and Drop Trio. We went to Amsterdam to shoot a movie about Carolyn Wonderland, which we will make this year!
It's been a good year!
I edited video and mixed music straight through the Holidays, but beginning on New Years Day, the tempo has been a bit different.
On New Year's day, several of the New Jack Hippies gathered at our house to celebrate, talk and jam. We talked about Bluesguy's Birthday Jam #4. Roger told me that Dr. Rockit had spoken to him and had accepted our invite to play with us on the Valentine's Day Birthday Jam (so we'll celebrate his birthday on that day, too). We talked about plans to try to go to Europe in May. This may or may not happen, but the guys in Amsterdam invited us - and we REALLY, REALLY want to go. I told the Hippies that Pat Brink had emailed and said that he'd pay Jerald Gray's expenses so we could take our original horn section. Wow! Even though he's livibg in Las Vegas now, Pat will be here for Bluesguy's Birthday Jam, too (and you should hear the very musical tracks he's laid on the new recordings)!
New Years day saw Phil and Claudia Gammage in from New York City, and their daughter Krista and John Riley Buchanan (Opie and Carrie Ann's son) had a blast showing her the grass and the bayou! Roger and Opie started jamming (Roger on mandolin and Opie on drums) with a little ditty that Chaz started on piano, and before you knew it, we were all putting sloppy background 10-voice chorus vocals on a new composition. Mikey, MArlo, Missy - they all sang!
Just the evening before, Roger and I had recorded three new tracks for the acoustic CD, and then recorded on Saturday until we went across the street for an acoustic set (with Chaz, too) at my neighbor Bruce's home, just two days before he goes back to Iraq.
This week Roger is over at Scarface's home studio, engineering for 'Face's next CD, and I'm mixing while editing the Carolyn movie. It's coming good - I've got 48 minutes, so far, with a good mix of music, narrative and fun stuff!
Check out a new video of Guy Forsyth playing the SAW on hippies.tv - REALLY - he plays it with a bow! Plus - there's a new 20 minute program of peotry and music up there, too (featuring Aaron, Ragah El, Kool B, Alex, and Lyric). That's on the web, at www.hippies.tv
Although the CDs and films aren't finished yet, I've had to begin on artwork, packaging and promotion - gathering images, contacting printers and CD duplicators, gathering credits, and contacting writers, radio, distributors, etc. Next week, I'll begin contacting venues overseas, and in the midwest.
We've begun meeting with people to get the 2004 projects moving ahead.
The guests are fairly set for the Bluesguy's Birthday Jam #4 on Valentine's Day afternoon, and I've had long, productive pre-production calls with Smokin' Joe and his show's recording maven, Frank Cupal. Things look good!
Mike McGuire, Michael Farber and Steven Buchanan showed up on Sunday to discuss SOUTH BY DUE EAST. DJ Woo called in while we were all here, and MArlo's reported keeping up with Martin, NORMLs Steve Nolin and DJ Freedom Justice by email. We all agreed that Marlo's focus on presenting music on film to the film-makers and distributers at SXSW was something we could plan and succeed at, and it would fit in with all of our other plans and budget.
Marlo and I compared notes and helped each other prepare some words...
She presented these ideas to everyone...
- Change name to something with its’ own meaning
- Concentrate on the artistic goals aspect and not the material gain for at least another year – philanthropic with an eye towards allowing the community of artists as a whole, to profit from our work before incorporating the event into part of our income stream.
- Hold event during daylight hours making the conscience attempt to not compete with the bar & band business after 10 pm, as a consideration to both the working musicians and venue owners involved. This also allows a larger segment of the population to get involved as an audience if the event is held on a weekend day. It also frees up the venue to hold another event or host a wrap party.
I left this on the table -
SXSW has done a job on us by seperating the three parts of the conference -
film, interactive media, and music.
Why? They all use music! Films and games use scores... themes...
But the big boys want the pies all for themselves.
The music industry doesn't like musicians.
SOUTH BY DUE EAST addresses this mismatch by creating
filmed showcases of musicians, composers, and bands,
including many types of music made with singers and poets,
and then creating and marketing a musical presence of
Houston artists during the SXSW film conference.
Everyone either agreed or agreed to go along with our contention that a large multi-venue event was something we had not the resources or volunteer man-hours to guarantee the same type of success. A smaller event at one location, inviting the public for free to create a good vibe and audience, then showcasing a dozen (or two) artists, and creating another film of Houston talent and music, was a goal we could set, and be successful at achieving.
Freedom has a party scheduled for the Thursday of that week, and it could be a third event, or a welcome party, etc.
At that point, we discussed the timing of our Houston event. If it is to only be a single venue with no cover, for the purposes of performance, filming and fun, couldn't we do it at any time of year, and not during SXSW? Couldn't we film Houston artists year 'round and make the film?
We agreed that holding onto the idea of building a larger event in the future was good, and that the continuinty of another March event of any type and size would help establish our own traditions and lead us that way, if we so desired. Being close to SXSW would help attract industry people and musical acts who are already in Texas for SXSW.
We also discussed the name. It was agreed that there will always be a possibility that SXSW would ask us to not use a name similar to theirs. They have deeper pockets and more lawyers than we do, so this would be a problem. We have no idea whether they have a sense of humor.
Mike McGuire has agreed to coordinate the second staging area at the show, to feature acoustic musicians, DJs and poets, including several poetry groups and slam team members.
We agreed to try to come up with an alternative name, and to use it within a new SOUTH BY DUE EAST (I've decided not to use the initials when writing - except on film) motto or slogan. Last year we called it "a different kind of showcase, for a different kind of city". Although I love the fact that Martin was influenced by my song ('a different kind of girl') when creating that slogan, I felt we should change it to include a possible future name. A dumb example of what I'm suggesting would be -
POTENTIAL NAME - 'Horse Fly'
NEW MOTTO - 'we fly like a horse fly, and create a bigger buzz!'
Then we discussed potential venues, ate Vietnamese sandwiches, and discussed some strategies for Austin. A lot of our Austin prescence will depend upon whether any of our films are accepted for official screenings at the fest. Their special theme for the film fest is Texas Music, and we've given them lots of that!
That was about it, besides the proper amount of Budweiser and Shiner Bock being consumed.
Speaking of bud.......
