*BLUESGUY'S BIRTHDAY JAM #4
Thursday 11:56pm
----------
Wow! I've been up a long time - even for me! Woke up at 6:30am on Tuesday. I keep meaning to sleep, but cool stuff keeps happening. Mickey Burton came in from Louisiana, and before I knew it he had Roger and Barry Feldt on the way to jam and record. It was a great session, and it just ended. We got 8 new tracks. There have been a lot of great sessions here lately.
I'm trying to write before I crash, so I can get this to you today. I've finished the blues album this week, and have most of the rock CD and spoken word CD lined out for the first test pressing. We've picked front covers for 2 of the CDs, and back covers for 3 (but we need 7 fronts and 6 backs - got anything good?), and I've listed most of the credits for all of the CDs. As it stands, there are 53 musicians, and 48 songs.
Bluesguy's Birthday Jam #3 is coming up on Valentine's Day afternoon, so the organization and promotion of that is getting to be a priority. Anybody want to help? Call me or meet up at tomorrow's Joe's Roadhouse Live from the RHYTHM ROOM, featuring The Brad Absher Band (with Teri Greene!), and the wonderful/legendary Pete Mayes.
Our 10 guest stars for the Birthday Jam are set now. The New Jack Hippies will play for 150 minutes, with each of the following joining us onstage for one or two songs - Sonny Boy Terry, Gloria Edwards, Kool B, Little Joe Washington, Opie Hendrix, Heath Spencer Philip, Tracy Conover, Dr. Rockit, Jerald Gray and Sandy Hickey!
We'll also do an all-night birthday jam from the radio studio the week before, during Pat & Rosie's Nightsounds on KPFT-FM & www.kpft.org on Feb 8th, with guests Ian Varley from Drop Trio, Opie Hendrix, Sonny Boy Terry and EP Vallejo.
There has been so much going on! Last night, I went to KPFT to hang a poster and stuff flyers for the Birthday Jam in the various DJs and programmers mailboxes, and caught a lively night at Matt Sonzala's program. Amongst the musicians, DJs, MCs and poets I ran into was Nick Cooper, from FREE RADICALS. Nick gave me a copy of FREE RADICALS new CD, and I'm popping it into the player right now.
Hmmm... maybe not...
I guess I left that CD inside the house, so I'll listen to it later. Instead, I'll put in the new 'Live At Miss Ann's Playpen' CD by Sonny Boy Terry.
To quote Hank Hill. "I'll tell you what..."
I'll tell you that I am impressed as hell with Sonny Boy Terry lately! He has really grown as an artist. I've known Sonny Boy Terry since when he was just plain Terry, and I've always considered him to be competant, yet 'workman-like' as a musician...
What I mean is - until this week, both he and his music have traditionally struck me as having little real 'artistry', There has always been a good quality to his music and performance, but his playing struck me as that of a student of the greats who had worked and worked on his craft until he could do a good recital of the standards. Speaking to him as a young cat, 20 years ago, I got the same feeling about him. He wasn't big on natural talent, but he had the desire and was willing to work for it. That alone was always enough to make a good impression on me.
You see - as a producer and bandleader, I've always had to assess the worth of a lot of performances and the personalities of their accompanying performers. I don't believe that everyone comes to the table with the same talents and skills, nor should they. A natural genius who never works on his craft (or shows up at rehearsals) is much less an asset to a band than the average guy who works on it day in and day out, so I take everyone's strong points into consideration when I evaluate musicians. Nobody is a TOTAL package, no matter what their hype says!
This new live album's is pretty damn good! The band is playing great! With Samantha Banks on drums, and Benny Brasket on bass, I would expect no less. I've never heard Little Ray Ibarra play guitar before, but he's burning up the tracks on my CD player right now! Sonny Boy Terry's harp is striking me the same way that it did when he dropped by my studio last week. Terry was here to add some harp tracks to my next CD (a four CD set), and that night of work convinced me that he was a changed man!
Sonny Boy Terry took the plunge about 18 months ago. He decided to quit his day job, and begin to take his music career as the number one priority in his life. He's worked on his performance, his playing, his conditioning and it shows in everything he does. He approached my session with an open mind, and then when I set him free to find his own parts - he began with one tasty track, and then began refining those parts like a pro, until he had boiled down each track to it's simplest statement of support or power, depending upon which was needed.
This live CD of his is the same way!
Sonny Boy Terry Band whips thru these tight arrangements like I would imagine the best of the first electric Chicago-style blues bands did when they invented the genre, yet Terry's band has so many of the influences of the gulf coast up front! It's a beautiful thing! Here's another Houston blues artist who will be heard by the world and bring credit to our community! Doc Blues Records has not just released this last testament to the coolness of live performances at Miss Ann's Playpen, now closed, but they've re-released Sonny Boy's 'Breakfast Dance' CD, a studio effort from a few years ago which captures many Houston greats in a proper studio setting. With a record company promoting both - a top-notch studio and Live CDs - the blues world could soon be Sonny Boy Terry's for the taking.
So - anyway...
I was at the radio station, at Matt Sonzala's show, and Renee from the news department comes in and starts talking about these Government In Media hearings in San Antonio next Wednesday morning. If you can go early and sit in line to speak up, please do. Rest assured (I'm not resting at all) - the corporations will have plenty of folks there to speak up for them. Get there early. I just can't believe that the best way to protect free speech is to put the media under government/corporate control...
When Matt's show ended, DJ Woo and Rezor T began their semi-weekly Alternative Scream, so I hung out a while longer. I asked Woo to play some of AERIAL BOMBARDMENT, the FREE RADICALS CD, and it sounded great. There are over 50 musicians and eighty minutes of music recorded all kinds of ways - and it's all quality stuff featuring all types of styles from around the world. I'm gonna go inside and get mine...
THE NEXT DAY...
Couldn't get this out to you last night. Over 50 hours with no sleep, combined with the new FREE RADICALS CD, put me out for the night. Don't get me wrong - I didn't fall asleep on AERIAL BOMBARDMENT, I listened to it. I really listened! There was no way I could write while music that interesting was going on! The practically 3 dozen pieces on the CD flow together as one larger statement. Interesting segues and interludes combine with short cuts - these are all free flowing performances - the way FREE RADICALS always do it, but these are the best of the best. Nick recorded them all, but then took two minutes from this gig, and six minutes from that gig, and produced one hell of an album. I don't know whether to use the word masterful or the word masterpiece, but I just woke up and listened to it again. From Gloria Edwards to Fast4ward, this CD contains many of my favorite Houston musicians caught in the act of creating music! The AERIAL BOMBARDMENT theme and the dedication to ('the two to seven million") innocent victims of American bombings since WWII, is consistant with Nick's willingness to put his body on the line for peace and fairness. Nick Cooper is a man who puts his music, money and politics where his mouth is, and each of them enhance the other. Highly recommended for those with unprejudiced ears.
Tomorrow (1.24) will be a musical day for me, but as a listener. Catch Nick Cooper and several dozen FREE RADICALS at the CD release party at Super Happy Fun Land on Saturday night, and The Brad Absher Band at Joe's Roadhouse Live at The Rhythm Room during the day.
