*REPORT : THE BLAZE FOLEY TRIBUTE
*NEW JACK HIPPIES' ALL NIGHT RADIO JAM (KPFT @ 1am-6am)
*BLUESGUY'S BIRTHDAY JAM #4
*WEEKEND CALENDAR

The Blaze Foley Tribute was great!

Roger and I left early enough for Austin, so that we could see and hear our closest friends (on the bill play). Mickey White (remember The Hemmer Ridge Mountain Boys?) played with somebody (Max Meyers) at 7pm, and Mandy Mercier, then Gurf Morlix, following right on their heels. We weren't scheduled 'til midnight (right after J.T. Van Zandt), but it was worth the early trip to hear Mandy and her band.

On the way up, we listened to some Blaze tunes and decided to perform IF I COULD ONLY FLY and OVAL ROOM. after that hard decision, we put in FREE RADICALS new CD, which I'd been telling Roger about. Marlo stayed in Houston to paint the faces of scores  of New England Patriots fans.

In Austin, we met up with Chelsea at the venue, then ducked out for some quick Mexican food, arriving back at the venue just in time for Mandy's set.

Gurf Morlix, our bandmate from the late '70s (Gurf, Roger and I played together with BW Stevenson and Blaze Foley) was up after Mandy. Gurf's entire set was comprised of Blaze's songs. Some of my favorites, including CRAWL BACK TO YOU and ELECTION DAY. It was a beautiful thing.

Why do other people go play at a tribute to a specific artist, usually dead, and then perform none of the artists material? Isn't the tribute to the artist AND the body of work? Isn't it most appropriate to perform material by that artist, and maybe tell anecdotal stories about the artist, so that newcomers are exposed the the body of work, as well?

I guess it would also be OK to do any of one's own songs that were inspired by, or about, the artist of tribute. And a song by another artist who had passed on would be OK, too.

J.T. Van Zandt got it! Accompanied only by Blaze's old Takamine nylon-stringed guitar and Matt Hubbard (our fellow Amsterdam traveller) on harp and melodica, his set was all songs by Blaze Foley and by one of Blaze's running buddies (who happened to be J.T.s dad). He played  BLUE EYES and IF I COULD ONLY FLY...

Man! Does that kid look like Townes or what!?

I didn't know Calvin Russell, who played next, but the way he and his band rocked through ROCKIN' THE REPUBLICANS, I knew that he was another of Blaze's many real brothers-in-arms. I think it's time to do that song again!

There were 10 other acts, too, most of which were new to us.

It was a fun night, and the fun should continue. Gurf & Brynda invited us to visit them at their place, and we've decided to visit as soon as we can! Gurf's a good man. As the night ran later and later, and many in the Austin clique put themselves above the schedule, it was Gurf who stood up for us Houston guys.

And most importantly, many new ears heard Blaze, heard Blaze's songs, and heard about Blaze. The paper ran a big article about Blaze, too. Mandy thinks we should do one in Houston. Hey - why not Houston, Nashville and wherever it was in Georgia that Blaze also called home.

I'l edit some of the footage I took at the Blaze tribute (Blaze's songs only), and have it up on HIPPIES TV (www.hippies.tv) by tonight, along with a new music video for LET THE RAIN FALL DOWN, a new song off of the upcoming 4 CD Set. The blues CD from that set is now finished, and will be available at BLUESGUY'S BIRTHDAY JAM #4, on Valentine's Day afternoon (3-6pm CST) at The Rhythm Room, and on KPFT-FM90.1 and webcast at www.kpft.org.

SUNDAY ALL-NIGHT / MONDAY MORNING
----------
We're also doing the first BLUESGUY'S ALL NIGHT RADIO JAM, on Pat & Rosie's Nightsounds on KPFT-FM90.1 this SundayNight/MondayMorning (Feb 9th) from 1am - 6am. The New Jack Hippies will play all night and be joined by Sonny Boy Terry, EP Vallejo, Opie Hendrix and Ian Varley of Drop Trio, plus some other special surprises! Listen on the radio or on the internet at www.kpft.org

Congratulations to Billy Block on the 8th Anniversary of his weekly Western Beat Show in Nashville. It's the coolest thing in Nashville!
