*REPORT : BLUESGUY'S BIRTHDAY JAM #4
*HIPPIES IN PASADENA SATURDAY
*SHEETROCKERS REUNION
*VISITING GURF & BRENDE
*WEEKEND MUSIC CALENDAR
It's noon on Sunday, and Marlo and I have just arrived at Roger's apartment. It's a one-bedroom apartment in the 610 - T.C. Jester area, right by the loop in Northwest side of Houston. We're here to listen to the raw tracks from yesterday's Bluesguy's Birthday Jam #4.
This is always a cool day for us. While a big show is going on, our minds are in one of two modes that are not condusive to actually enjoying the whole of the event. Some of us are working at logistical aspects of the ongoing show production, while others are engrossed in the making of the music. Some of us - like me - are switching between the two. We never see what the audience sees, except for that rare gig at some mid-west old-time rock-and-roll bar with mirrored walls all over the place.
But, today we get to watch the show and listen to all of the music - not just the parts we could each hear from our individual spots on the stage. Not just the little piece of the stage which Marlo or Mike McGuire got to see through the viewfinder of the cameras they were shooting through. I've decided to share this process with you, taking time to write about it as we go. It may get weird, because I'm liable to go back and forth, writing from present-tense as third person listening to an archive, and then changing to first person as I drift back to Saturday and recall my thoughts during the performance.
Oh well, here goes…
The tape starts with sound check, which evolves into a great version of ALL THROUGH LOVING YOU, one of the first songs that the band ever played together at the old Thursday night jam at Dan Electro's Guitar Bar, before we were a band. Following that came a really funky rocking version of NO NEWS GOOD NEWS. Great shot of Pat Brink, as he plays a killer solo. What a sophisticated sense for note selection Pat has developed. And here's Levon Louis, putting the first surprise into the songlist, and thereby eliminating the song/time-list altogether. AND… we just introduced hip-hop into the Joe's Roadhouse thing - I hope that doesn't bug too many of our friends, but I do love to include ALL of my recent collaborators at the Birthday Jam, and these people party onstage (just like us!).
Wow - No News turned into ROGER NEEDS HIS MONEY from our new R&B album - and now I'm rapping-see what Levon started.
OK - here's Sandy Hickey singing my old 14-chord blues, SINCE MY BABY WENT AWAY. And here's little Joe Washington, climbing onstage to take the guitar solo! Oh well - the list with song and performer times is totally out the window now It's funny how Little Joe can take a song he's never played and play melodic lines right off the bat without hitting a single note which conflicts with the melodic structure of the song. He's sooo good. Now Sandy surprises the band with her request to sing St, James Hall, another song from the new album. At least is one we've been playing regularly, and Sandy nails it. I'm swearing that I'll never print up a song list again. Next I called RUN AWAY, a straight-ahead rocker from the 'Return of The new jack Hippies' album in 1999. Roger and Marlo both asked me' "Why the heck did you pick that song?"
"Hell! I never know!"
And now we introduce Little Joe Washington. Joe blows on stage in his usual whirlwind style and starts making up a slow blues birthday song for me! How cool is this!? When I heard Joe singing at me, I was hit by the impulse to run onstage and sing back to him. Now we have a brand new original birthday song, written by Little Joe and me - now that's a birthday gift! In the middle of all this, Joe starts doing his 'playing with his teeth' thing, so I grab the camera Marlo set up in front of Chaz and got a real close shot of Joe and his guitar (actually Opie's guitar). After that, Opie and I took off to the parking lot for some fresh air, while Little Joe ran the band through a jump shuffle and another slow blues.
And now we begin I KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON, another new song. Ahh - nothing like teaching the band new material onstage with the cameras and multi-track recorders going. Next comes Heath Spencer Philip, but I'm really getting behind with this writing. I'm starting to watch and listen to more and more of the show...
That was all I wrote on Sunday. From this point on, my eyes were fixed on the videotape. Heath Spencer Philip, Kool B, Opie Hendrix, Tyri Schiek, Lyric Osirus - one after another - they came onstage to play with us, and the videotaped performances are quite entertaining. It all ended with a super-jam featuring Tracy Conover, Sonny Boy Terry and Jerald Gray. I had a blast. I'll get some video up by Monday at www.hippies.tv.
The next 48 hours were pure panic, as we tried to get all of of the audio tracks transferred to the same format, and cut out a few songs for Frank (the usual Joe's Roadhouse recordist), so he could give Joe a mix which sounded similar in approach to all of the other mixes in the series. It was a rush to get them to Frank, and a rush to get out of town. At the Blaze Foley Tribute Show in Austin a couple weeks ago, Gurf Morlix, Roger, and I had decided that this would be a good week to visit Gurf and Brende at their place on Lake Travis. After the longest drive to Austin ever, we arrived just in time to try one of their favorite tex-mex restaurants before it closed for the night.
Back at the ranch, we sat around and talked 'til 2 or 3am. Roger crashed first, followed soon by Marlo and Gurf. Brende lasted another 20 minutes, so I sat around the living rtoom reading. First, I read some poetry from a book by Bob Schneider. Great poems, illustrations and printing, Bob! Earlier, Gurf had played us a couple tracks he had recently produced on Bob, and I can't wait to hear the whole album. He had also played us a cover of a new (to us) song by Fred J. Eaglesmith, by an artist named Mary Gauthier. What a good sound he gets, and what a voice she has!
I woke up at dawn. Roger was already outside on the prck/deck with a guitar in his hands, so I grabbed one and joined him. What a view! All we really did on Wednesday was to hang out and do an all-day fire-grilled meal of veggies, tofu, shrimp and salmon. Great food. Great folks! What a great day!
I'd better stop now, it's getting late, and some of you guys really want this calendar.
If you're east of town, Roger and I will play with Kicking Clouds on Saturday night, at Moonshadow in Pasadena. If you're in town, please support a benefit for Jay Peterson at Cosmos on Saturday night. It's a great night of music featuring a reunion of the original SHEETROCKERS, including Big Al and Little Jr. One-Hand, as well as Harry O & Way-Way Out, Mike Simon Band , Vatos Locas, Big Al Bettis Band, Romeo Dogs, Tommy DarDar, and Space City Aces! All that music, and the chance to help one of our own - what a deal!
AND - next comes SOUTH BY DUE EAST. I'll tell you more soon, but - check out the line-up for SOUTH BY DUE EAST at Super Happy Fun Land (March 20-21 2-9pm, so far...
