RIP - Bill Gonce
----------
Bad news, friends.
Bill Gonce passed away this morning at the age of 46. He is survived by his sister Cathy and step-brother Chuck.
Bill lived for the music.
Bill Gonce was one of those rock-and-roll people who weren't gifted with the talent to make the music, but still found a way to be an important part of our musical community. Bill's major in-yer-face contribution to the Houston music scene was his monthly column in the Music News. For years, he and publisher Kevin Wildman have made certain that every working musician in town got his/her name in the press a time or seven every year.
Drummer Leesa Squyres said, "He was a big guy with a big heart who was always dedicated to the local music scene. Whether you were a cover band or an original band, he was always there. His dedication meant a lot - to a lot of people."
Many of you are Houston music fans, and may not know Bill by name, but you've read his words, and have probably seen him in the clubs, bars and concerts where the music was happening. His usually perfect multi-shaded blonde hair (always cut into an elongated page-boy haircut) was a stark contradiction to his unkempt beard and ever-present denim overalls.
Bill was a big, tall man, with a gruff exterior that belied the big-hearted guy inside. When my (now 30 year old) son joined the Cub Scouts some 20 years ago, Bill came by and shared his old patches with Levon as a gift. He wanted to tell Levon about the joys of achievement, and to inspire Levon to do his best. It was like watching two kids share stories.
A sampling of the patches told us what Bill had not...
Bill WAS an acheiver, and had acheived the rank of Eagle Scout. I was very impressed.
The Boneman remembered birthdays and made every musician feel special. Bill was relentless in his pursiut of information about all of us. He didn't dig deep, but he made sure that we were ALL taken care of. One could say that he took better care of the musicians than he took care of himself.
His lack of concern about himself, combined with his large body, almost insured that when the first middle-aged disease or condition hit him, he would have a hard time fighting back. Bill was hospitalized ten days ago after a fall, and died peacefully in his sleep after his body just shut-down.
In his way, Bill took care of many over the years. Many of my friends (and many who don't like me at all, for that matter) would have never found a way to record their songs if Bill had not taken them to Stinky's Studio. I don't know what their deal was, but Bill and Stinky found a way to make recording services available for many artists who would not have afforded it otherwise.
Bill wanted to be cremated, and wanted no services to be held. Upon the passing of others before him, Bill would often say that the only memorial he wanted when he died, was to have his friends speak of him out loud. His friends are contemplating whether they can handle that or not, and several are talking about some type of memorial gathering. His sister will take his ashes back to California.
And that's all I have to say about that. We'll miss you, Bill!
