What a wild and fun time for me!
We've started doing live dates again, and even though the recording and film projects are not totally finished, little pieces are filtering out as they are completed - and the response is terrific!
The film tribute to Bil Gonce, titled 'This BONEMAN', premiered at the tribute night at Forgetta Bout It, and all the metalheads out there applauded loudly (something which took Marlo and I by surprise - we had never premiered a film before). Not only that, but I was awakened the other morning by a phone call from Carolyn Wonderland, expressing her appreciation of the film (I guess she saw it at Pam Jam's house), It's really nice to wake up to a voice as sweet as Carolyn's, and this was about the only way for me to accomplish that!
I'll write about all of our recent fun and music in a minute, but right now I need to give you the New Jack Hippies calendar, as well as mine. I'll finish up most of the new CDs in the next couple weeks, and then go play bass for Vince Bell for a couple more. I'll be nearby with Vince on May 8th at The Old Quarter in Galveston, and in Austin at Jovita's on May 14th.
The New Jack Hippies will perform at The Lookout in Surfside on May 22nd.
In between those dates, I'll be working on editing the Wonderland film, as well as The SOUTH BY DUE EAST and BLUESGUY'S BIRTHDAY JAM films.
After that, we intend to play more dates around Texas in June, followed by a few festivals up north in July (in exotic locations like Ontario and Wyoming)!

NEW VIDEO ON HIPPIES TV
----------
I've placed 'This BONEMAN' (the film I did for Bil Gonce's memory) up on the video website for free viewing and download, as well as a few new videos of musical performances.
New Videos on HIPPIES TV include performances by Sisters Morales, Hayes Carll, Ray Wylie Hubbard (on a video called 'Friends I Saw In Austin Last Week'), Little Joe Washington (from Birthday Jam #4), The New Jack Hippies and some cool rock band I saw at a block party in Sonny James' neighborhood.

ROCK ROMANO'S RED SHACK
25 And Counting!
----------
Rock Romano's Red Shack is celebrating it's 25th Anniversary. Rock has recorded dozens of my friend's albums, and I've even used Rock's Studio for tracks on three of the New Jack Hippies CDs. Congratulations, Rock!
Rock is also a bit of a pack rat, and has kept much of the gear that the studio used to use before his recent improvements. All that used gear takes up room where a guy like me could put another New jack Hippie or two during a recording session. What I'm trying to say is - if you head to the Red Shack for a session, and see something you like, make Rock and offer and put that old gear to work! Check his ad in Music News for special anniversary block rates. Michael Heyman, James Bolden and Big Al Bettis already have!

REPORT FROM THE FIELD:
Hippies Ride Again!
----------
April 2003 started off with the first new live dates for The New Jack Hippies in a while. We played at Southmore House with Lyric and Kool B at The Secret Beat Society's Poetry Slam. Southmore House is a cool new performance space, and these guys are up for anything artistic and cool. We were exposed (and played with) a bunch of new (to us) poets, and had a great time. We'll be back.
Next came Pat & Rosie's fundraiser for KPFT, called April Foolery. It was a very musical event at The Last Concert Cafe. We arrived in time to catch the last David Fahl & Folk song, and were told that Robert Frith had done an outstanding solo set just before David and Mikey, et al.
Myrna Sanders was next, and they sounded great. This band, including Greg Barr on bass, and the lovely and talented Mike Simon on guitar, has really jelled around Myrna's songs, and the sound is terrific! Mark Zeus & The Thunderboltz followed Myrna, and they were dynamic, musical and tight. Marlo was really impressed. After having seen Mark only as a late night folkie at Pat & Rosie's radio show, the sight and sound of the Thunderboltz was energizing, to say the least. We both grabbed cameras and had a ball!
Next came a rockin' New Jack Hippies set, featuring guest guitarist Opie Hendrix and a slew of new songs! Fun jams were had, and we nailed our new 'LOST IN TIME, LOST IN LOVE' from the ROCK ONWARD CD. We had recently been mixing the recorded performances from SOUTH BY DUE EAST, and the performance which Opie and The Texas Tallboys did of Opie's song, 'BOB' (which he wrote onstage at 2003's SOUTH BY DUE EAST) was already on our minds, so we asked Opie to close the set with his new classic, 'BOB'. It rocked!
Then, last Wednesday, Jimmy Deen and Kieth York joined in as we paid tribute to Bil Gonce. We arrived at Forgetta Bout It early, to make certain that the film could be plugged into at least one of the dozens of TV's in the place. It worked, so we sat back and enjoyed some of the ham and rigatoni that Frankie had cooked and provided. Lisa Ward and Kevin Wildman put on a great tribute show. Midnight Cross began the show, rockin' hard as they do. Next came Stinky's band, doing a set full of Bil's material with their tongues planted firmly in their cheeks and their fingers on the fretboards. Bil would have been proud!
We set up during the showing of the film, so we really were surprised when the room broke out in applause for our film! Jimmy Deen was a star, as usual, with all of the rock attitude and hormonal aphrodisia that always follows him around. We did 'Dead Flowers' for Bil, and then Jimmy rocked it on 'Gonna Be Allright'. I did Bil's 'It Pleases My Heart'. Next came E.P. Vallejo, who came on like gangbusters and had a few surprises of their own, including Hellstar's James Rivera singing a song, and Rob rockin' the house!
The 420 fest at The Last Concert Cafe could have featured less rain, but since the big stage was out of commission - that's where we hung out and partied!Sean Reefer and The Resin Valley Boys did a crack set of cracked-up songs about weed, and Little Brother Project funked up the place with some of the best groove music I've heard lately! The Goodtrain Sessions were next, and grooved likewise, even without Teri Greene, who was anxiously trying to get back to town with his car stranded at the side of the road 150 miles away. By the time Carolyn Wonderland began, the show was 2 hours behind, thanks to the rain and a rookie promoter. It looked like everyone would not be able to play. Actually, it looked like WE would not play without finding a replacement for Roger and Leesa, both of whom had to leave for other nighttime gigs. Carolyn Wonderland, the pro that she is, knowing that Roger had to leave for a gig with Tracy Conover, suggested that The New Jack Hippies set up onstage with her band, and that she would shorten her set and bring on the New Jack Hippies without any downtime, thereby allowing us to play a short set of our own without substitute Hippies. Jeremy Horton was ready to play bass, and there were a couple of drummers ready to go, but we decided to shorten our set, too.
Shortening both sets would get Carolyn on the road back to Austin, Roger and Leesa on the road to their gigs, and put The Hightailers on stage at 10:30 - right when they were supposed to be! Thanks to Carolyn's generousity and quick thinking, the show was back on schedule. The Hightailers rocked it up as we partied on the back stage.
Then came US and THEM, a Pink Floyd tribute band. If it weren't for Carolyn, these guys would have never gotten to play without bumping us or The Hightailers!
Now I've got to tell you that I feel several ways about cover bands. It's great to see musicians working in any form, but I'm lover, supporter and creator of original music - so that is where my heart and priorities lie.
Tribute bands don't do much for me, either.
So, as I listened to the opening stains of the Pink Floyd set, I wondered if I might be better off back at the house, working on the Wonderland movie, or finishing that new song that Jimmy Deen, Roger and I wrote after rehearsal for the Bil tribute. Since the brain was working anyway, I gave furthur thought to concept behind this tribute band. The music was good - just like Pink Floyd.
Amazingly like Pink Floyd.
Tribute bands have never done it for me. I loved QUEEN, but no matter how well the QUEEN tribute bands play the songs, some other guy all dressed up like Freddie Mercury while strutting his faggy-self a la Freddie ruins any chance that I can suspend disbelief for even a nanosecond. The Blues Brothers are easy enough to copy, but two guys in suits, fedoras and shades don't make it - and they never think to get a good guitar player to be Steve Cropper or a saxman like Blue Lou. KISS tribute bands look like 4 guys in KISS costumes, and I think that they've got the same guy playing Jimmy Page AND Joe Perry in ALL of the Led Zepellin and Aerosmith tributes.
The music of Pink Floyd should be performed and remembered. It's a great body of work. Symphony orchestras around the world keep the music of Bach, Stravinsky and Bernstein alive by recreating their works, so why not Pink Floyd and all of the great composers of the '60s and '70s?
And this one kinda worked.
Since Pink Floyd never did allow their image to revolve around personalities or fashion and the like, it was always about the music. If a band recreates the music, they recreate Pink Floyd. No costumes or dance steps needed for this one (maybe some killer stage staging and sets).
No doubt about it. US and THEM nailed the sound of Pink Floyd. The people sat and hung on every word and riff. They stood up and cheered in all the right places. They lit up their BICs, and held them to the sky. The people got off.
That was it. A promised afterhours jam never got off the ground.
It was a great show, but I must make one more comment. The young musician promoting the show is a fellow I really like. I like his musicianship, his drive, and his evolving abilities. He'll be an important part of our music scene for years to come. I proud to call him a friend but I must point out where I believe he messed up. I hope we're still friends after this.
When I arrived the show was already running two hours late. As I've said, if it weren't for Carolyn Wonderland's generousity, out set would have been an inconvenience if it had happened at all, and would have meant that either The Hightailers or US and THEM would have performed for only 30 minutes or not performed at all. This young man, knowing that one stage had fallen through because of rain and the show was running late, should have let his band play a shortened set earlier on. In all, he played with two bands, and each of them played for almost 2 hours, while four other bands were severely shorted on play time. Two of the headlining bands were forced to play way after they were scheduled, and for less than a half hour apiece.
I'm not upset, 'cos it was just a rookie mistake. He's a good man, but the event overwhelmed him. He'll learn to recognise these things (they happen all the time) and adjust on the fly. All in all, he did a great job, and it was a great event, and money was raised to help a good cause!
