It's a good time to be a New Jack Hippie!
It's almost time to finish production things (yes - acoustic CD, and therefore the 4 CD set ,will be finished this week!) and get the band on the road again. We go international this time. We've been doing a few tune-up gigs, and the new material is a lot of fun.
In fact, almost everything has been fun lately! Even the editing!
I edited my way through the majority of the Memorial Day Weekend. For those of you on this list who have served, you have my thanks and respect.
For those of you who partied, celebrated, mourned, meditated, chanted or prayed this weekend in honor of those who have served and sacrificed, you have my respect, too.
Only two parts of our weekend even closely resembled partying.
Chaz Nadege and the Buchanan family came by for Memorial Day burgers and dogs (and MArlo's Chicken MAsala with my guacamole and roasted cauliflower). If you don't already know, the Buchanan family is the institution from which local entertainers Carrie Ann Buchanan and Opie Hendrix spring forth. Their two lovely children are equally entertaining. It was a quiet dinner, with a little songwriting (the last song for the acoustic CD), and movie-watching (Ali G In Da House & Opie's segment for the Birthday Jam film) thrown in for good measure. If you haven't heard of Ali G, you should look him up on the web, movies or cable!
The other event was down in Surfside Beach, at the new version of The Lookout. I like these guys! When someone takes over a former live music venue and immediately improves the stage, lights and air-conditioning, then begins booking a wide variety of live music, I'm on thier side.
We played there a couple weeks ago, but this past weekend was their 16 band Memorial Day bash. Roger and I went down on Sunday night. in time for Tin Henry and Hollister Fracus. Hollister Fracus is a well polished metal band who could take it all the way if things go right. I've known this for some time, and they delivered as expected. The surprise was Tin Henry. I know these guys, and like them a lot, but the one time I had seen their band, two years ago, they were new and it showed. I called Marlo on the cell-phone before their set was through, and told her to move these guys up to the A-list, 'cause they really rock hard and funky now!
Kudo's to Chris Lucher (and his buddy Matt) for bringing these bands (and ours) to this new venue on the beach.
Earlier today, I was editing film of a jam with Sonny Boy Terry, Jerald Gray and Tracy Conover with the band at my birthday show. Then there is watching CArolyn and her band (as I do while I edit the Wonderland footage from Amsterdam), which would be any music-lover's delight!
The Canadian tour planned for the end of July is rapidly showing signs of growing and extending for a few extra weeks, and I'm not certain that all of the Hippies can do that. Chaz quit his day job just before we left to tour in 2001, and managed to be a full-time musician until two months ago. He just got a new day-job. Like any new job, he has no sick leave or vacation time built up, so an extended tour might jeopardize his relationship with his new employer. I may need a keyboardist.
Leesa Squyres was going to go with us, but her main band, ORANGE IS IN, has an important date right in the middle of that tour, so she would have to fly back and forth (and we'd have to fly a drummer in), so it looks like we're looking for a drummer, too!
Pat Brink will fly in from Las Vegas and pick up Gerald Gray for the flight to Toronto, so the horn section is solid, and you could be on that flight, too!
So many of the New Jack Hippies play in several bands, and it's always interesting to watch their priorities shift from one project to another. We all respect each other when we exersize the MAIN BAND theory. It kinda works this way - a musician gives a commitment to one group of musicians or bandleader that theirs will be the MAIN band, and that they will prioritize themselves to play all of the gigs that come up for that band.
Truthful musicians will tell other bands and bandleaders that they have this commitment, and that they will take other gigs when their MAIN band isn't booked - sometimes subject to cancellation with (or without) a few days notice or the agreement to find a suitable replacement.
Other, less truthful and/or considerate musicians (YOU know who you are!) will take a job from another bandleader, and cancel without notice if their MAIN band gets a gig (or worse - take every gig offered and cancel all but the highest paying).
It's a tough call to make. If one is truthful, some bandleaders will shy away from hiring to avoid the inconvenience of having to find the last minute replacement (and the honest musician loses work). The calls begin to slow down or stop coming altogether. If one is not truthful - the gig offers will keep coming in until that musician has burned each bandleader, one at a time. Then, for those guys, it's time to move to another town.
The commitment doesn't always appear for the same reasons, though. Sometimes, the commitment is music driven, and stems from a commitment to taking a project with great original music, or great players who love to play together, and moving it forward towards common goals. Other times, that commitment is based on dollars, with the bandleader who pays more per night, or usually has more gigs booked, asking for and getting that commitment.
Leesa's main band, ORANGE IS IN, is great, but it is only her MAIN band some of the time, because they all have another band, SLAPSHIFTER, which is the same group of people plus RENEE MONTGOMERY, a great singer/songwriter who fronts the band for the SLAPSHIFTER gigs. Leesa also plays dates with me, dates with JIMMY DEEN and MOPAR MIKE, and others, but SLAPSHIFTER/ORANGE IS IN gets first priority.
Roger's main band is The New Jack Hippies, but many people recognize him around town recently for his great basswork with TRACY CONOVER, who he's been gigging with a lot. He also does a few dates with The SISTERS MORALES (who were his MAIN band until we began playing our songs together again several years ago). Besides our band, CHAZ NADEGE currently plays with LEONARD 'LOWDOWN' BROWN and with THE DREAMBREAKERS. Whether he has a MAIN commitment to any of us is a matter of great curiosity, but it seems to work out.
TERI GREEN is a great guitARist, who's music has enhanced my compositions on tour and around town, but THE NEW JACK HIPPIES has never been his MAIN project or band. When I met Teri, his MAIN band was with SONNY JAMES & THE SINNERS, but I've seen it change several times since then. Right now, I couldn't tell you whether he's MAINly committed to THE MADISONS, THE BRAD ABSHER BAND, BIG AL BETTIS, or someone I haven't heard of, but I know he's making great music with all of them.
We just got back from DJ WOO's birthday party, and Marlo has crashed hard. I'm previewing videotape of the performances as I write - and at this moment I'm watching and listening to DE SANGRE.
It was my second time seeing these guys live, and wow - do they rock hard! It was a humbling experience for me, because I got to watch Alex, their powerful vocalist, express his concern over trying to cover for the guitarist they recently lost. I understood. I have often felt like I was the weak musician in the band while on guitar. Roger and I are both career-long bass players, and the transition I made to guitar (so we could play our songs together), has been a very self-consious experience for me. Alex played guitar tonight, and the band sounded fine.
DE SANGRE's rocking arrangements were killerbee and missing nothing at all. The tasteful, simple guitar parts moved the music forward in a way that even the hot-shot guitarist they lost couldn't do. I hated seeing Alex so concerned, so I told him my story after the set. I think we both felt better.
Nonetheless, DE SANGRE is looking for a new guitarist, and that's the way it should be. Alex is a dynamic frontman, and belongs out front. BUT - we've decided that neither one of us will be feeling sorry for our guitar playing anymore. Catch DE SANGRE keyboardist REZOR-T on DJ WOO's radio show, every other Thursday morning at 3-6am on KPFT-FM90.1.
CHANGO JACKSON was playing when we arrived.
These guys have it all - rock chops, great songs, catchy hooks, cool/wierd rock theatrics and a punk attitude. They were jamming in the freeform, which turned out to be sound check, and it was magical already. But, when CHANGO JACKSON launches into their songs, the future of rock-n-roll seems assured.
I heard that a young band called BO JONES had played earlier, and according to those telling me - they blew minds! A trio of high-schoolers who sounded like music degreed musicians twice their age, is how I heard it.
The show was anchored by Galveston's CitiZEN CHANGE. This funk/hiphop/groove unit laid down a set of beats which left everyone smiling.
I didn't realize that it's already 6am! I'd better get back to finishing CDs and movies.
The New Jack Hippies play nearby three nights this month, at The Lookout in Surfside on the 25th and 26th, as well as at The Civil Wings Ballroom in Brenham on June 18th....
Here's yer calendar.
