First of all - HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MOM!

July 12th - THREE DAYS OF SUMMER FEST (Meridian @ 5pm)
July 25th - HOUSTON PRESS MUSIC AWARDS (Deans at 7pm)
So far. it's been a great musical summer for a bunch of our friends, and for all of us, too!
MArlo has probably had the best month of all, because a lot of her work is at the point where the public, and other friends and associates get to see/hear it. Her voice work is being featured on two video games for fall release this year. She and Roger Tausz have been working with Levon Louis' Chakra Sound (we all have, to some extent), producing music, sound effects and dialoge for KOHAN:Kings Of War (see it reviewed in PLAYBOY), as well as doing the same for the upcoming video game based on the old board game, AXIS & ALLIES (I did a voice for a U.S. Army General!).
Besides doing several voice-acting characters for both games, MArlo has handled casting and studio/talent booking for Levon, while Roger has engineered most of the live-mic recording duties (I've engineered a couple sessions and added a voice or two, also, but they've really been at it while I finish CDs and films). And that's not all Marlo's got coming along - her THREE RIVERS historical/Texas musical play is in it's second rewrite, with several communities committed to producing the play. David Fahl and I have each contributed a bit, but this one is her baby. There's a recording of hers, too, but I'll write about that in a minute.
Roger is working in his studio with Tracy Conover as I write (at this very moment), and they will be nailing down Tracy's LIVE CD any minute (or any day). It's a great live CD. It was an easy mix for Roger. They played so well, that the main thing they had to do in post-production was to decide how long to leave the applause until fading out after the songs. Besides live gigs with Tracy and with The New Jack Hippies, Roger has also been recording Mike Spencer, Sandy Stewart and Thuy-Linh Cornett. PLUS - we've been mastering the 4 CD set of our new (New Jack Hippies) music.
Besides finishing up the 4-CD set, and working on the Wonderland & Birthday Jam films, I've been busy in my studio producing tracks for or with Norman Pennington, Opie Hendrix and Jimmy Deen, as well as doing preproduction work with Ant Boogie of Collective Hallucination and demo sessions with Two Of A Kind. We're doing a live video shoot and 16-track recording with Collective Hallucination at 8:30pm on Saturday at OMNI Central (on Scott St. @ I-45) on Saturday night, when they double-bill with TRU SOL for a very musical evening.
As soon as that is over, we'll run downtown to The Meridian (1503 Chartres St.) to catch LunateX and Joe B., as they finish up night #1 at THREE DAYS IN SUMMER. This 3 day fest (SAT, SUN & MON!) is my type of show - 3 dozen of the best local acts of ALL genres. I'll play with The New Jack Hippies on Monday at 5:15pm with Chango Jackon playing shortly thereafter. The whole line-up is;

While recording Norman Pennington (you'd remember him as 'Buster' Pennington from the band, Goin' Postal), I was impressed (as always) with his talents and abilities) he's got a great voice and is a seriously good songwriter. Norman's hired me to get demos of his new songs that "don't sound like Stevie Ray Vaughn". I can handle that!
Roger, Chaz and I were checking out Marcus Roberts on the drums one night last week, recording everything, when I hit upon a new progression...
'Hold on - let's do this - I have an idea for a new one!", said I.
Suddenly, I realised that it was not new and not original to me. It was part of an arrangement I has done a couple weeks ago on one of Buster's new songs. OH, well - let's do it anyway!
The song came out great, and I asked marlo to sing a background part. She sung it really well, and now Norman had 2 demos of his new song!
But - I got to thinking....
MArlo sounded good on this one. Why don't I get her to sing the lead?
It worked! Now we had three demos for Norman, one with a female lead!
MArlo was proud of it, too. She sent it to a few friends, and now, Phil Gammage (formerly of Houston, but a New Yorker in the band CERTAIN GENERAL) has decided to produce the song on Claudia's next CD!
Soon there will be 4 versions of Norman's song! <g> I'm going to send MArlo's version to texastop40.com so you can hear it, too.
Haven't been out much lately, with all this production work. Tried to write about the benefit for my long-time aquaintance (and good guitarist, and good guy) Tony Lee, whose abdominal problems are similar to the stuff I had last fall (but worse)! It's tuff enough therapy that Monica Marie & The Blues Cruizers have cancelled all dates, for now. I wrote to tell you about it, but a Yahoogroup glitch froze me out that weekend so the letter never got out to anyone except the 200 on my list who haven't been added to the yahoogroup yet.
Gene & Joni Kelton put on a great event. Dozens of artists showed up to play, including Monica Marie, Mark May, Dave Nevling, Roy Head, Steve Rangel, Matt Leddy & the Meat Cutters, Professor Blues, Thurman "P-Funk" Robinson, Terri Green, Sandy Hickey, B2B, Mean Gene Kelton & The Die Hards, Curtis Craig, Rick "Biscuit" Maxwell. The auction & event brought in much needed dollars, but more could help Monica and Tony. The band may not be working, but the bills keep coming.

Went to Keith York's birthday party, where ALL of his bands showed up to play (Guppies From Outer Space, York-Diaz-Gonzomatic, Blowtorch Repair)! It was a fun night, and Keith received a new set of DW drums from Guppies' bassist Danny Cates! Eight years ago, The New Jack Hippies did our first gig as a band outside of the Dan Electro's jam at the benefit which bought Keith the (replace his stolen) drums he's been currently playing. Time marches on...
Lot's of friends have been nominated (Drop Trio 4 times!), so please take a moment to vote in The Houston Press Music Awards.
I'm going to finish up now. There 's a lot of work to do before this THREE DAYS OF SUMMER festival. Kudos to Martin, Richard and Brett for putting this thing on.
