After sending out two letters about the fiasco at the festival last week, I really need to follow through with a report about the music.

 

The music was great!

 

I already wrote about the great sets by Joe B., and Chris Anderson on Saturday. I probably spent too much space telling you about the promoters stiffing the artists, and not telling you just how great The Brio Kids were before their set was cut short, along with their pay. LunateX, BMC, and Andrei Morant never played, because their contracts called for payment upon arrival (so the promoters suggested that they were off the bill).

 

I recieved many supportive emails from all types of correspondants, and a few kind souls aimed at cheering us up. Thanks!

 

No cheering needed here.

We are a cheery bunch anyway, and had a good time the rest of the weekend.

In fact, I believe that all had a blast playing there Monday evening.

The bands had been warned by my Sunday letter, but I spoke to most of them on the phone and told them all that I would go and play anyway. That's what I intended to do. And, I would do it for more reasons than the fact that I had agreed to perform, and that (up to that point) the promoters had not screwed me... yet.

I reminded them all of other factors. It's about the music, and we'd all have a good time playing for our fellow musicians, and hearing them all play, too. I pointed out that if Martin had called in the first place, and asked us to play for him for free, most of us would have done it anyway!

Plus - we all had a few people who would show up because we had asked them to, and nobody wants to disappoint one fan who came and laid down their time and money... even to crooks.

 

I returned to the festival on Sunday night, again as a spectator and videographer. Dubtex was onstage, and that was allright with me. I love these guys! Their blend of dancehall reggae, drumNbass and hiphop makes my blood flow better than usual. Drummer/producer Lion 808 plays with a masterful funk and drive that few can equal!, and the tag-team vocals of FerenJ Wande aka Dredi Knight and Mr. Rico keep everything moving.

 

Pilot Radio was in the next room. Good band. Great frontman and the drummer is a real natural! I'd never heard them before, but I'll make an effort to see 'em again! The Handsomes followed. We'd shared a Thursday night at Rhythm Room before, and I liked them at that time, but these guys keep getting better and better.

 

Having been up all the night before, (holding a camera on the police as the venue management - I'm told that he's Bob Fuldauer, formerly of Garden In The Heights - and one of the promoters kept trying to convince the police to arrest performers - the very performers they had NOT PAID), I barely stayed awake long enough for a great set from Opie Hendrix & The Texas Tallboys! The addition of guitarist Ian Tomsik gave Opie a boost, and the breathing room to put even more energy into his vocals and audience relations.

 

I left early. had to sleep.

 

The New Jack Hippies played early on Monday. It was a great set, with video and audio to be forthcoming. The audience was primarily made up of friendsw form the other bands. We ended our set and I went to the office to get paid. I was told that we should have cash by 10:30pm.

Almost all the scheduled bands put in great performances. Then, as each band went to get paid after their set, they'd walk out of the office grinning, come to where the rest of us were standing, and proudly announce, "I'm now officially amongst the screwed!" This was followed by hi-fives, good humor, shared love and the clicking of shot-glasses. We were all promised our money at 10:30 or 11pm. The 10:30-11pm promise was missed, also.

I stayed to videotape and enjoy the rest of the bands.

 

CitiZEN Change played after us, and set a groove that only a big band can do. De Sange's new guitarist showed great promise, and my pals in Hollister Fracus rocked the house big time. Tin Henry played a great set, proving that they are now amongst our city's best.

 

I've got to tell you that the dressing area was a trip. At one point, this large room (which was a common dressing area for ALL 30 bands) held several band meetings while Los Skarnales warmed up with acoustic Conjunto music as the guys in Motograter applied full-body warpaint before their set. What a cool scene.

 

Bad Acid Trip, from , featured wild speed metal punk with one of the best punkrock frontmen I've ever seen. Unfortunately for him - he had to follow Los Skarnales, with frontman Felipe galvan, probably the best frontman in Texas. Motograter closed the show with a raucus set of heavy-metal featuring a killer stage look and great movement.

 

Some of us got personal checks at the end of the night, with the promise that the money would be in the account in a week or two. Oh yeah!

Martin left early, unpaid himself. He posted his take on the whole deal to my band's discussion group ( http://www.yahoogroups.com/group/newjackhippies )this morning. He backed up what I wrote on Sunday, and added to it. We both love Richard Tomcala, and have for years. I told Richard that I'll help out if he does another and asks. As has been said, these guys are well-intentioned optimists. But I can't condone dishonesty and ill-treatment of artists, even with the best of intentions. Next time, if there is one, they should tell the bands they're trying something cool, and ask them to risk it with him. There will be enough takers, and nobody needs to be conned.

Not only can I not condone it, I feel an obligation to expose it to my musician friends, and fight it at any level, from the mighty Clear Channel (whom Richard misleadingly claimed as a sponsor) on down.

Now, about Dick Cheney....

I wonder if he has a lisence for his minkey....
