Wow! It's been busy (and that's the way I love it!)
Went downtown to play at The Houston Press Music Awards Showcase, and again for the awards show. The showcase was well produced this year, but less attended than last because of rain, we got to see one great performance after another.
DR. JEFF & THE PAINKILLERS played before us, and really warmed the standing-room only crowd with their combination of rock standards, Beatles and blues. THE EL ORBITS had just done the same with a classic pop vent.
DROP TRIO put in a very musical set - but that's what these guys do.
BTW - Ian Varley has taken over the coordination of the Tuesday night meet-n-greet at the Volcano, and has put together a list of rotating hosts. This months get-togethers will be hosted by the likes of entertainment attorney Mary Jane Hancock, TRU SOL frontman Jerry Richards, and Ian himself!
After a rousing set by THE HUNGER, we left the awards showcase for several dates on the road.
We were back in time for the Press Awards show, but it seemed lackluster compared to last year. Might be that we played a great little set last year, or possibly that there was half the crowd and half the winners present this year. Either way - thanks to the Houston Press and all of the sponsors.
The best of the live dates was in Austin.
July 28th was my daughter Chelsea's last night in Austin before moving to Chicago for audio-engineering school, so she arranged a great party for herself.
Her buddies ELEFANT, a NEW ORDER-style rock band from New York City, were coming to Texas, so Chelsea arranged for us to play with them at Stubb's BBQ in Austin.
ELEFANT claims to play The New Jack Hippies Homegrown Collective on their tour bus every day, so I asked Opie Hendrix to come along and play guitar so we could do his song from that album, too!
Our old friend Rhett Bigham dropped in and offered a free place to stay. Brad Caudle, from Collective Hallucination, dropped in to play percussion, too. It was a musically fun night. The sold out crowd loved ELEFANT, and tolerated us very well, indeed! <g>
At home, I've spent time working with Lion 808's place, and had CitiZEN Change and Ickoo from The Brio Kids over here.
The New Jack Hippies played Cosmos Cafe on Friday, and saw the likes of Tommy Dardar, Mopar Mike, Albert Storo and Bill Lucas in the crowd. Lisa Williams sat-in with us, too! She should do that some more!
BTW - there's a big benefit to offset some of Tommy Dardar's medical bills. Tommy is OK - but the bills remain.

TOMMY DARDAR BENEFIT
Sunday, August 8th
----------
I first met Tommy Dardar at tThe Carousel Skating Rink on Katy Road in 1966. He was a baby faced kid with curly brown hair parted in the middle and covering his ears (long for the time) who shocked us with his powerful baritone voice. That was way before he began becoming a master harp player and showman. He was a good man then, and he's a better man now.
Now, Tommy needs a little help, so I'm reprinting this.
From Rhett Bigham;
Please come to the aid of one of Houston's greatest treasures on Sunday, August 8th. He is a big man with a big voice that plays a mean harmonica, but now he has big problems too.
Many of the best musicians depend on their day jobs to support their love of music. Tommy has lost his job & his insurance with it. Tommy is always there to play at benefits for anyone who needs it, so now the Houston music community has an opportunity to give back to the big man we all love.
Come out Sunday, August 8th starting at 1PM until it is over, at The Cockeyed Seagull - Nasa Road 1 at Egret Bay.
Musical lineup includes: The Romeo Dogs, Norma Zenteno, Tommie Lee Bradley, Andrea Fairless, Ronnie Hall, The Grateful Geezers, Shakedown, B K Long, The Citykings, Dave Nevling, Charlie Greenway, Benny Brasket , Donny Taylor & BIG DADDY GUMBEAUX hisownself!
