Time to write again, because a lot of my friends are playing gigs and doing things you might want to know about.
Played at a cool venue in Conroe, called The Texas Art Venue, with Roger and Gloria on Tuesday. This was part of The Montgomery County Friends of the Blues Series for North Harris/Montgomery County College. Great room, great listeners, and we had a ball!
In the meantime, I'm wrestling with myself as I wear two different hats...
I'm editing the last night of the Carolyn Wonderland In Amsterdam footage, and I find the musician in me having to debate with the video editor. As a musician and recording engineer, I have a somewhat unique ability to hear more of the different musical elements in each pervformance than many other video editors. This is a blessing and a curse.
As part of the blessing, I can line up the different cameras with great ease - just by looking at the wav forms of the recorded soundtrack. My developed ear can also hear mistakes with more ease than most. As part of the curse, I wrestle with decisions such as the one I'm dealing with right now.
When I first turned on the camera at the airport as we were readying to leave for Amsterdam, Scott Daniels (Carolyn's fine guitar player) looked into the camera and said, "Make us look good, Guy!"
I'm starting the movie with that comment.
I know that Scott, Carolyn and all of the band have trusted Marlo and I to make it a film which presents them in the best light, or at least lets the music tell the story, rather than hype, silliness, drama or any of the other elements which could come into play.
My problem tonight is this -
I'm looking at a performance of Billy Joe Shaver's song, 'Honey Bee', from the third night's performance in Amsterdam. In this version, the band is cooking! During his guitar solo, Scotty is moving his body, shaking his hips and head, and really looking great. It's a great groove, and the band is really moving and entertaining the people. Added to that is the fact that the lighting was better on the third night, so the camera shots look crisper and better.
Scotty has told me that he felt that he played better on Saturday, the first night, but they all played pretty damn well on all three nights! Unfortunately, while shakin' around and putting on a better show, this brilliant guitarist played a good solo. That's right, it was only a good solo - not the greatest... not his best.
Scott Daniels is a great guitar player, He's also a knowledgable guitar player, with a guitar a degree and a music degree from North Texas to prove it! His work with Horseshoe was good stuff, and the stuff I've heard him while sitting in with The Hightailers or playing in the country band that used to do Monday night's at mary jane's has always been inspiring.
I've checked the tapes and his solo on 'Honey Bee' from the first night is brilliant. Unfortunately, the band's groove is 10% less groovy, and the camera work is darker and further away.
As a video guy, I should choose the better video, with the better guitar player faces from Monday night. As a musician, and a friend of Scotty's, I'm inclined to take the better musical performance.
BUT - whose better musical performance do I take? The band's better Monday groove with better camera shots and better movement onstage? Or the brilliant guitar solo on Friday?
I could use the sound from one night with cameras from the other. I have enough skill to pull that off, but we've all agreed that the integrity of the performances must be put out front in this film.
Decisions, decisions....
I've asked Carolyn and Scott to come by and help with these decisions, but it's pretty clear that they're gonna trust me and Marlo, and are willing to leave it in our hands.
I hope that everyone is pleased when it's done! It's great stuff!

JOHN DUNIVAN
Needs An Operation
----------
I barely know him, but he is a friend of many friends of mine, so I'm passing this on. I'm not sure what type of operation John needs, but with all the times I've seen him drunk, I suppose it could be liver problems... who knows.
I enjoyed his class, when I took his comical defensive driving course, but never understood why he left my name off of the events listings on so many earthwire.net newsletters. He was instrumental in publishing Houston's Other, the alternative rag which filled the space between Public News and The Free Press (and you've got to give a guy credit for that).
While drunk, I actually saw him walk up to a woman and say, "You be pretty good lookin', if you weren't so damn fat!" He then turned around for approval. I don't drink, so the humor was lost on me!
Anyway - he may be a long-lost friend of yours, and HE NEEDS THE HELP! Opie Hendrix and Pilot radio will play at Catbirds on Westheimer on Sunday from 3pm 'til 11pm, and a whole lot of community businesses have donated items and services for the auction. Catbirds will donate $1 from every drink sale.
