NEW JACK HIPPIES & OPIE HENDRIX
Saturday Night - Roger, Guy & Opie at THE OLD QUARTER in Galveston
----------
Unfortunately, we have a sudden gig for Saturday night, at the old Quarter in Galveston. It will be a rare acoustic Hippies show with Roger Tausz and I being joined by Opie Hendrix. The Sisters Morales were scheduled to play, but have cancelled, due to a death in the family. Our hearts go out to Lisa & Roberta and their whole family.

REPORT FROM THE INFIELD
Dan Electro's Last Blues Jam (or was it?)
----------
I had a great time at Dan Electro's Guitar Bar last Sunday evening. It was to be the last jam at Dan Electro's.
Dr. Zoomack is retiring from this city, and has moved to south-central Texas over the past couple years. He and Harvana are opening a new venue/shop in the old bank building in Moulton, Texas (between Houston & San Antonio - about 60 miles south of Austin).
Marlo & I arrived late and left early due to other commitments, but I'm happy to tell about the things I saw and heard. When I walked in, the Madisons were onstage. I immediately found the sign-up list for the jam, and added my name and Roger's.
I was overwhelmed by the number of people cramming into Dan's for the event. I wasn't about to miss Dr. Zoomack's last jam, and was happy to see that EVERYONE felt the same way. Lizzie Harrah, Teri Greene, Ruel Russell and the other Madisons (I don't know who was actually in the band and who was just jamming) sounded great, and Lizzie's sultry voice was a turn-on, as always.
GAry Burgess was next. Marlo and I were blown away by the fact that this guy named Gary who I knew for years in Houston, was the same gary burgess who wrote FRANKENSTEIN, one of my favorite songs on my gigs with Vince Bell! I'd loved the song and played it for years, but never snapped that Vince was introducing THAT Gary Burgess!
The patio was bustling with people. There were musicians who had played on that stage for the past 15 years. There were friends of Dr. Zoomack and Harvana. There were neighborhood folks who had come to Dan Electro's for their music fix for years.
I found out that the bar would not be closing. Bob & Mel Belle had purchased the place, and were planning to continue many traditions and create a few of their own! Cool!
Zoomack came outside and told me that Roger and I could play after the Goodtrain Sessions. Teri Greene took the stage with them, too! They sounded great. Teri plays with them a lot, although they don't list him as a member. The members are Randy Wall (on keyboards), Jeremy Horton (on bass), James Reese (on guitar) and James Edwards (on drums). Every one of these guys is a young player I admire and whose music I adore.
Marlo decided to get out the cameras and start taping. We got good stuff.
The New Jack Hippies followed. Teri Greene, Randy Wall and James Edwards remained onstage and joined in. Skeets played sax and Sandy Hickey came up to sing SINCE MY BABY WENT AWAY. It felt like the old Thursday night jam! At that jam, Dr. Zoomack was gracious enough to let me try out all types of new material, and The New Jack Hippies band was formed there as a consequence of that latitude he showed me. Without the exception he made for me, all of those musicians would have only heard me playing the top 40 of the blues.
Chaz arrived late (from a LowDown Brown gig in Conroe). From what I was told, he drove into the driveway in the middle of our set, left his van running, popped his head in the door to see who was playing, and ran onstage to releive Randy. Near the end of the set, I was given the traditional napkin with a note - asking me to announce the a vehicle with the following license plates was blocking the lot. It was Chaz, of course.
We headed out back after we played, but the music drew us back in within 10 minutes. It was a jam set with Sonny boy Terry, Big Al Bettis, Starvin' Marvin & Eric Dane - and they were rockin'! We grabbed the cameras and got some great rock & shuffling on tape. As we left, Jennifer Fitts and Adela Cabillo were cranking up. We were so sorry we had to go, but I had not been aware of this event 'til late, and had promised to be elsewhere. I'm sure the party went later than the 10pm that was listed on the website.
Marlo & I havve already got an edited 30-minute film ready. It came out great! I need to run it past all the great players and get permissions for their performances before putting it up at www.hippies.tv, so please be patient.
If you are one of the artists reading this, and can take a large file in your mailbox, I can send a Windows media file for your perusal and permision. Or come by, and we'll have a good time doing it! I'll come to you, if neither of those options work. My number is 713-721-0093.
Good luck to Dr. Zoomack and Harvana. We know we'll be seeing them at 'Ole Moulton Bank', their new venue, shop and home. details about that can be found at www.danelectrosguitarbar.com.

NEW ORLEANS - She rode to the lounge in a pink limousine, cradling the box
that held her husband's ashes. Inside the bar, under a ceiling of paper

were candles, ceramic angels and an album cover showing the Ink Spots, the
fabled quartet he had toured with for 20 years. Overseeing the tableau was a

Here at the Ernie K-Doe Mother-in-Law Lounge lie the ashes of vocalist Lloyd
Washington, who was 83 when he died of cancer in June. His shrine, a tribute
by friends and fans, is a makeshift response to a sad and familiar problem:
How to bury with dignity the artists who have enriched the musical legacy of

Like Washington, many of New Orleans' musicians never have seen a royalty
check. Some are buried in a paupers' cemetery that is pocked with trash and
crumbling, homemade tombstones.

Washington's widow, Hazel, wouldn't hear of such a thing. She'd sooner cast
his ashes to the wind, and might have if friends hadn't talked her out of
it. So, Hazel brought his ashes to the shrine, then went home to grieve and
await some sort of resolution.

It came in the form of Paul Barbarin, heir to a large family tomb and part
of a New Orleans musical dynasty. In a room at the Mother-in-Law lounge,
with a bust of rumba-boogie pianist Professor Longhair nearby, Barbarin
recently signed documents to grant use of his family's tomb to local
musicians, rich or poor, who register to be buried there.

The Barbarins' musical roots in New Orleans date to the 1800s, when
patriarch Isidore Barbarin played alto-horn and mellophone in the Excelsior
Brass Band. Paul Barbarin, 73, is named after an uncle who died while
leading a brass band in a Mardi Gras parade. More recently, his nephew, jazz
trombonist Lucien Barbarin, has worked with Wynton Marsalis and Harry
Connick Jr.

"People just want to do something for musicians who have done so much for
this city," said Rob Florence, president of the preservation group Friends
of New Orleans Cemeteries. Paul Barbarin, who lives in Los Angeles, declined

Six of the eighteen vaults in the 20-foot-high Barbarin family tomb will be
reserved for musicians, Florence said. Most crypts here are built above
ground because the water table is so high. And with space at a premium, they
often are reused. By law and tradition, a casket can be reopened a year and
a day after interment. The remains may be removed and placed in a bag, which
goes in a common area inside the tomb. This makes room for a new coffin.

Under this system, the musicians' tomb will be almost eternal, said Anna
Ross, a member of the Friends of New Orleans Cemeteries. Ross is more than
familiar with the city's pragmatic approach to death: In 2001, her daughter,
a classically trained harpist, donated a vault in her family tomb for rhythm
and blues man Ernie K-Doe. Last year, she reopened the tomb for musician
Earl King.

and blues man Ernie K-Doe. Last year, she reopened the tomb for musician

K-Doe, known for the 1961 No. 1 hit "Mother-in-Law,"could have been buried
in a family plot in the countryside, but he wanted to stay in the city. "If
you're from New Orleans, you want to be buried in New Orleans," said his
widow, Antoinette, who operates K-Doe's namesake bar. "It's good to have the
musicians buried in one place so people don't have to go all over to look
for them."
She fusses with the life-size mannequin at the club, meant to resemble her
eccentric late husband. It's currently dressed in a Pepto-Bis- mol-pink
suit. "See, our manicures are the same," she said, wriggling her fingers
next to the mannequin's long, pink-and-white nails. "Sometimes, I take the
hands off to get them manicured across the street."

She recalls when K-Doe, who was black, was buried in the tomb belonging to a
white family. "We took a lot of heat for that," she said. Ross said that
"some people asked: 'What are those white women doing with those bodies?' I
promise you, no one is collecting dead, black musicians. It was just the
right thing to do."

Washington will be the first to be interred in the musicians' tomb after it
is dedicated in October. He was an early supporter of the idea, performing
at a benefit last year where revelers tossed cash into a velvet and sequined
coffin that half a dozen "pallbearers" paraded across the dance floor.
Similar fundraisers will help pay for a $20,000 renovation of the Barbarin
tomb's brick and plaster interior, Florence said.

On Nov. 2, All Saints' Day, set aside for paying respects to the dead,
Washington's friends plan to meet at the Mother-in-Law lounge. A brass band
is scheduled to lead a jazz procession to the historic St. Louis Cemetery
No. 1, not far from the French Quarter. As Hazel Washington raises an index
finger and drops it down, signifying the release of her late husband's
spirit, the high-stepping, umbrella-twirling celebration will at last begin.
